Product Description
Webster's bibliographic and event-based timelines are comprehensive in scope, covering virtually all topics, geographic locations and people. They do so from a linguistic point of view, and in the case of this book, the focus is on "Astronomy and Astrophysics," including when used in literature (e.g. all authors that might have Astronomy and Astrophysics in their name). As such, this book represents the largest compilation of timeline events associated with Astronomy and Astrophysics when it is used in proper noun form. Webster's timelines cover bibliographic citations, patented inventions, as well as non-conventional and alternative meanings which capture ambiguities in usage. These furthermore cover all parts of speech (possessive, institutional usage, geographic usage) and contexts, including pop culture, the arts, social sciences (linguistics, history, geography, economics, sociology, political science), business, computer science, literature, law, medicine, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology and other physical sciences. This "data dump" results in a comprehensive set of entries for a bibliographic and/or event-based timeline on the proper name Astronomy and Astrophysics, since editorial decisions to include or exclude events is purely a linguistic process. The resulting entries are used under license or with permission, used under "fair use" conditions, used in agreement with the original authors, or are in the public domain. ... Read more

Product Description
Many able and cultured writers have delighted to expatiate on the beauties of Milton's ' Paradise Lost,' and to linger with admiration over the lofty-utterances expressed in his poem. Though conscious of his inability to do justice to the sublimcst of poets and the noblest of sciences, the author has ventured to contribute to Miltonic literature a work which he hopes will prove to be of an interesting and instructive character. Perhaps the choicest passages in the poem arc associated with astronomical allusion, and it is chiefly to the exposition and illustration of these that this volume is devoted.
The writer is indebted to many authors for information and reference, and especially to Miss Agnes M. Clerke, Professors Masson and Young, Mr. James Nasmyth, Mr. G. P. Chambers, and Sir Kobert Ball. Also to the works of the late Mr.

5-0 out of 5 stars A few words about the author
I had the extraordinary good fortune to have Paul Dempsey as a professor at the University of Denver College of Law. DU Law School is nationally, if not internationally, recognized as having one of the best transportation law programs in the United States. Paul Dempsey is, more than anyone, responsible for this honor. He regularly travels the globe as a consultant in all areas of transportation law. In the year I had Professor Dempsey, he went to China and Italy to consult with the local governments. Dempsey is also a founding and continuing member of the board of Frontier Airlines. If you are a CNN junkie, you've probably seen Dempsey testifying before Congress. In short, if you want the definitive inside scoop on the airline industry, and the building of DIA, you're not likely to find a more informed person than this guy.

Dempsey is a prolific author, and a highly respected academic. He has published far more than what you see listed here at Amazon.com.

For more information on Paul Dempsey, check out his exhaustive listing of publications at http://www.law.du.edu/support/facbibs/dempsey.htm. For even more information on Professor Dempsey, you can see Frontier Airlines latest 10K report at http://www.sec.gov/edaux/formlynx.htm

4-0 out of 5 stars Tome on DIA covers all bases
Lessons Learned is a long-winded tome on DIA and the complexities of airport management and design. Most of the book's facts and information are derived from already published sources. I would have liked to have seenexclusive interviews with the actual people involved in the making of DIA(politicians, workers, et al) -- this book is simply devoid of theinvestigative touch. Nevertheless, a lot of time and work went into writingLessons Learned, of which the authors deserve credit. DIA is a story worthyof the 500 plus pages of material, unfortunately Lessons Learned drifts offinto territory that will only interest those involved in airport design andmanagement -- some of the technical discussion is boring and does notpertain to DIA directly. The book doesexplain in detail the politicalmaneuvering within Denver that went into the making of DIA -- this materialis the most interesting part of the book. In conclusion, if you share aninterest in DIA or airports, get this book. I did and I don't regret it. ... Read more

Product Description

The age of merely looking at the heavens, of mapping and cataloguing the positions of the stars down to fainter and fainter limits, is past. Throughout that long period the pace of astronomical discovery was necessarily very slow and for centuries it remained virtually static. The invention of the telescope and then the spectroscope brought about an acceleration in the rate of progress which has continued unabated to the present day. Scarcely a year now passes without some spectacular advance being made, so that today, with the co-operation of modern techniques in physics, chemistry, rocket technology and biology, many of the older notions have been completely overthrown and new ideas set up in their place. And now the rapidly developing techniques of rocket research have made it possible to carry astronomical instruments beyond the atmosphere which confines our visual and photographic observations to an extremely narrow band of the electromagnetic spectrum. Now we are able to view the universe in ultra-violet and infra-red light, and by X-rays and radio emissions which are otherwise almost completely absorbed by the atmosphere.

Each problem that is solved, however, only serves to present us with a host of others in increasing complexity. The boundaries are being pushed back steadily, it is true, but the realm of the partially understood and the totally unknown is still as great as ever, and it is with this vast no-man's-land of astronomy that this book is concerned. It deals, amongst other subjects, with astronomical instruments and their application, recent discoveries in the solar system, stellar evolution, the exploding stars, the galaxies, quasars, pulsars, the possibilities of extraterrestial life, relativity, etc. With this book as a guide, the reader cannot fail to experience some of the tremendous fascination of present-day astronomy and its innumerable unsolved problems.

Product Description
In this fascinating book, the reader is offered a selection of papers summarizing the unique contribution to modern cosmology of the Soviet school, led by the late Yakov Borisovich Zeldovich. The first three articles in this selection introduce the general reader to the underlying theories of cosmology: the birth and expansion of the Universe, matter and antimatter. The remaining five contributions are review papers offering the more advanced reader a deeper understanding of the structure of the universe, cosmological field theory, microwave background radiation and galactic distribution. The balance of introductory and advanced papers makes My Universe a work of value for graduate students entering the field, for research workers expanding their knowledge, and for the layman seeking an insight into one of the most important subjects of the 20th century. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A great collection of works by a great scientist
This is an excellent collection of works by one of the great and universal scientists of the 20th century. This should not be considered as a textbook; this is really a collection of review papers, both expositional for the lay audience, and rather advanced articles. This book provides a great introduction at provides an overview of the state of the field as of 1987.Some of the speculations have proven to be true, others forgotten, while many are still open. The book is interesting as an introductory overview of the subjects, as well as a historical perspective.
The cost was a little high, considering that it is a paperback.
