Product Description

James Elkins has shaped the discussion about how we—as artists, as art historians, or as outsiders—view art.He has not only revolutionized our thinking about the purpose of teaching art, but has also blazed trails in creating a means of communication between scientists, artists, and humanities scholars.

In Six Stories from the End of Representation, Elkins weaves stories about recent images from painting, photography, physics, astrophysics, and microscopy. These images, regardless of origin, all fail as representations: they are blurry, dark, pixellated, or otherwise unclear.

In these opaque images, Elkins finds an opportunity to create stories that speak simultaneously to artists and to scientists, and to open both those fields to those of us who have little purchase in either.Regarding each image through the lens of the discipline that produced it, Elkins simultaneously affirms the unique structure of each way of viewing the world and brings those views together into a vibrant conversation.

Humankind has studied the skies for centuries, seeking to find our place in the universe. Some of the most important discoveries in the field of astronomy were made in these texts recorded by ancient stargazers, but almost as impactful were the perspectives of those who considered their discoveries to be heresy. Any independent astronomer will find this an invaluable collection of titles arguing the truth of the cosmic system.

Astronaut and artist Alan Bean was the lunar module pilotfor Apollo 12, and on November 19, 1969, the fourth man to walk on themoon. Apollo is the collection of his paintings and personal accountschronicling, with technical accuracy, the manned Apollo missions tothe moon. Bean's paintings and personal anecdotes make thetechnological wonder of Apollo a human adventure. Paintings includeHouston, We Have a Problem from Apollo 13, Neil Armstrong's first stepon the moon and stunning lunar landscapes of a place only twelveastronauts have ever visited. The text, by Apollo historian AndrewChaikin, puts the reader on the moon with Alan Bean and Commander PeteConrad.Amazon.com Review
When NASA sent the crew of Apollo 12 to the moon, theymay not have realized that they were giving an artist the vision thatwould carry him through a lifetime of painting. The artist, of course, was astronaut Alan Bean, whose trip to the moon with pals Pete Conradand Dick Gordon sunk so deeply into his brain that he's been trying toget it down on canvas ever since. He even mixes moon dust and bits ofcharred Apollo 12 heat shield into his paints to capture a bitof the Ocean of Storms in each image. The astronauts Bean paints arebrave, exuberant, and all-American, right down to the reflections ofOld Glory in their mirrored visors. His moon is surprisingly colorfuland dreamlike, a magical place for jumping higher than you ever didbefore, racing around in the lunar rover, and swatting golf balls intoorbit. Apollo: An Eyewitness Account, coauthored with spaceexpert AndrewChaikin, is filled with Bean's riveting stories and paintings, recording a long, successful career as an explorer-artist. Herecreates the drama and brash enthusiasm of the Apollo program in boldstrokes. --Therese Littleton ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Bought it for the artwork
I bought this because of the illustrations. I am an artist and illustrator myself and Alan Beans work is outstanding.
The fact that he was there and did it makes his art all the better.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful book in every way
When you get Alan Bean, astronaut and amazing artist, with Andrew Chaikin, a tremendous writer, you have the recipe for one magnificent book. The artwork, of course, is the main ingredient and it never disappoints. Alan Bean has a unique talent and tells the tale of going to the Moon in his drawings. Even without the accompanying words, it is easy to lose oneself in the moment. I think there is a certain 'realness' that the photos dont have and I do not know how to adequately explain why.
At any rate, this is a wonderful book and any space fan should not hesitate to pick it up.

4-0 out of 5 stars An artist from the Moon
There are sometimes laments that we will never get a proper description of what it's really like to be in space until we send a poet. However, though NASA may not have sent a poet, it did send a painter. Al Bean had dabbled in the arts before and during his tenure as an astronaut, but when he retired he focused on becoming a painter and particularly on creating paintings that showed what it was really like to walk around on the surface of the Moon. This book contains many of those paintings.

The text, meanwhile, is yet another memoir by an Apollo astronaut, and if anything is rather on the terse side, with only brief bits leading up to the more extensive Apollo portion, and only a brief conclusion. It's interesting but doesn't stand out amongst the many other astronaut memoirs, except for the accompanying illustrations. Each chapter concludes with a dozen or so pages reproducing Bean's paintings, with Bean explaining the scene he was depicting and what he wanted to show. This makes this book a unique record of one man's trip to the Moon, and, I suppose, won't be matched until we actually do send a poet.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exquisite Paintings from the Moon
First, let me say Alan Bean is one of the most articulate of the Apollo Astronauts who walked on the Moon.In addition to the painter himself captioning his collective series of truly unique "Paintings from the Moon", you owe it to yourself to purchase the DVD, "For All Mankind".This DVD is reviewed elsewhere on this site, but it and this particular book of Mr. Bean's paintings will likely become most treasured additions to your collection of manned spaceflight memorabilia.

I also found the dramatic characterization of Alan Bean, and exploits of his Apollo 12 crewmates, depicted in Tom Hank's 1998 HBO miniseries, "From the Earth To The Moon", to be very entertaining.Thatespisode of that facinating and truly outstanding TV production was first telecast in 1998.This book was published in the same year and the two works complement each other very well, upstaging most of the other spaceflight documentaries somewhat lacking in humanistic content.

We are very fortunate to have had at least one Astronaut with additional interests other than pure science and aerospace engineering, to share his extraordinary experiences while a key member of the Apollo program.

The one and only thing missing from my copy of this book is Alan Bean's personal autograph!

5-0 out of 5 stars Reviewing Hero's
If you have a strong interest in Space travel, and always wanted to talk to the Astronauts that went to the moon to ask them how it felt or what they were thinking as they walked on a planet other then earth, this is the book that will bring you to a time that has never been repeated.A time when man walked on the moon.

Mr. Bean's use of his fantastic artwork to describe a part of his life when he was a member of the elite few, chosen by NASA, to become the first to walk on the moon, is the closest you will get to actually being there.

It is a book of Mr. Beans paintings but also a trip thru the minds of some of our first Astronauts. If how space travel began interests you at all, I strongly recommend obtaining this book. It's a must have to any collector of Space Memorabilia. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good book for the Layman!!!!
What Dr Ross (Astronomer, Astro-physicists, Pastor) does hear is take on Physics and Christianity: Dr Ross shows us the tools that are used in physics to resolve paradox's and he applies those tools to Biblical Paradox's. A Paradox is a seeming contradiction. Such as Light is a Particle, And Light is aWave, with quantum Physics we learn that its light is both a particle and a wave. Now what Dr. Ross does is apply this paradox resolution to issues of Christianity such as the Trinity, Eternal Punishment, Free Will vs. Predestination, How The LORD can hear the prayers of 6 billion people, at the same time, How God can see all time at the same time, How Jesus' 6 hours on the cross could pay for all sins for all time, How God's extra or exeter dimensionality can be a way he knows US more then we do ourselves. And much much more. This is written to the Christian and is not a book to covert someone. Its purpose is to help Christians understand these deep mysteries and thus have a closer relationship with the LORD. And it is easy to understand so I would recommend it to anyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Truth Scares
Hugh Ross does it again. This book is not good for those who hate facts getting in the way of the comfort of ignorance. Quarks, string theorem, nano particulants--God is in it all! Perfect.

5-0 out of 5 stars Effective for opening minds and enjoying discoveries
The "cookies are on the top shelf" with this collection of wisdom.Great read in small chunks. Discovering the apologetic analysis of physics is refreshing.Too bad it isn't listed as available.

5-0 out of 5 stars Too Bad Its Out of Print
Hugh Ross takes String Theory with its multi dimenstionality and turns it toward Theistic purposes by addressing many paradoxes associated with Christianity. His addressing the issues of the Trinity, evil and hell are particularly intriguing. My guess is this would probably not persuade all who raise such objections, but Christians desiring some (literally) out of the box answers will enjoy this quite a bit. On the other side, a few answers don't draw on multi dimensionality too much giving the book a slight "grab bag" feel, though I can't recall really disagreeing with any answer he gave. Very innovative, a characteristic hallmark of Ross, even to one who takes exception to his old earth position (not really addressed in the book) but who still appreciates his efforts (so consider this review high praise indeed).

5-0 out of 5 stars Beyond the Cosmos
An excellent explanation of the different dimensions that God is in and why we can't understand so much of how He operates since we only live in 4 dimensions.Wonderful explanation of why God created heaven and hell.It is a very scientific book so be prepared to THINK!Once you get past the first 3 chapters it gets much easier to understand. ... Product Description

In an age of x-ray telescopes and interplanetary probes it is easy to dismiss pre-scientific cosmologies as naive expressions of fear, hope, and superstition. But, if science teaches us anything, it’s that the pursuit of truth begins and ends with humility. What are the stars? How big is the universe? As readers of this fascinating exploration of humankind’s efforts to map the universe will discover, after 50 centuries the questions remain the same. Only the tools we use to try to answer them have changed.

Co-published with the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum to be the official book of their new permanent exhibit, “Explore the Universe,” Beyond Earth is a celebration, in brilliant pictures and words, of cosmologies including ancient China, pre-Columbian America, classical Europe, and 20th-century astronomy. In it many of today’s leading lights in the sciences, arts, and humanities share their personal insights and professional observations on the art and the science of cosmological thinking, from the Aztec calendars to the Hubble Space Telescope images of the Horsehead nebula. How did they envision the mysteries of the cosmos and creation? How did they map the night sky? How do we perceive the universe today? Luminaries such as Nobel laureate in physics Robert Wilson, astrophysicists Vera Rubin and Margaret Geller, and Harvard historian Owen Gingerich attempt to answer these and other fascinating questions by exploring an array of cosmological visions as expressed in the art, architecture, and writings of cultures East and West.

4-0 out of 5 stars Breath-taking
By National Geographic - that says it all! Great color, images, angles. It also goes into some details concerning the technical and historical side of scientific discoveries. Best of all, its not eurocentric. It's balanced and gives credit wherever it's due. It gives 2 whole pages to Meg Nath Saha. I take off 1 star because, for the price tag, the book should have more pages.

In full color thirteen specialists have written chapters dealing with "The Classical Universe", "The Modern Universe Emerges" and "The Current Universe". Using present day tools astronomers are now attacking the same old unsolved problems.
