Product Description
In a stadium they call "The Rock," Golden Eagle fans have been roaring for a team that achieves new heights with each passing season. Legendary quarterback Brett Favre played here, as did such greats as Reggie Collier and Sammy Winder.

Now in "Rock Solid: The History of Southern Miss Football," beloved voice of the Golden Eagles John W. Cox gives fans even more to crow about. A must have for any Golden Eagles fan, "Rock Solid" documents the pride and tradition of one of the nation's top college football programs from its founding in 1912 through the Conference USA championship season of 2003.

When the school set out to lay the groundwork for its football program, there were no comparable squads to take on near Hattiesburg. So the Eagles humbled local high schools. After some success in the late 1930s under the direction of coach and eventual athletic director Reed Green, the program began to soar in the post–World War II era, when Green turned the reins of the program over to Thad (Pie) Vann. Vann steeredthe team into the 1960s and to recognition as one of the top defensive teams in the country. Former Southern Miss standout P.W. Underwood took over the program in 1969 and skippered the team to one of its biggest victories, a 30-14 win over No. 4 Ole Miss in 1970, a win that ignited the drive to build a new stadium. M. M. Roberts Stadium, "The Rock," opened in 1976.

The late 1970s and the 1980s brought cries of "Eagle Fever" and "We Believe," while quarterback Collier and tailback Winder dazzled the crowd and "The Nasty Bunch" defense made its name. Later in the 1980s, Golden Eagle football also saw the arrival of Favre, who would lift the school to a new level. In the 1990s, Jeff Bower became head coach and the Golden Eagles gained membership to Conference USA. They celebrated by winning four league championships and six post–season bowl games.

"Rock Solid: The History of Southern Miss Football" takes you back to the greatest moments of University of Southern Mississippi football. The stories of the struggles that fashioned Southern Miss into the successful program it is today, along with profiles of the people that keep a rich and proud tradition strong, make this book an invaluable and entertaining resource for all fans of Golden Eagles football. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Let the debate begin!
The last four words in this book are, "let the debate begin!", and that is surely what this book will accomplish. In PRO FOOTBALL'S GREATEST QUARTERBACKS, editors Barry Reeves and Ron Smith have mirrored Smith's earlier work, Baseball's 100 Greatest Players, using a similar format here.

It is doubtful that there is a sports fan alive that will agree 100% with the picks here, or on anyone else's list, for that matter. The editors have used a proverbial "panel of experts" to make the final selection. The writing is exceptional and the methods of selection, plausible. But of course, no true sports fan could let it go without injecting criticism.

The book begins with a surprisingly well written introduction to the paternity of NFL Quarterbacks by Troy Aikman. This is followed by a panel of five guys associated with the game in one capacity or another, who set the parameter of what makes a great quarterback. Several topics are discussed such as who had the strongest arm, the most accurate passer, scrambling and running ability, who ran the best two minute drill, and on and on.One thing that struck me is that the overall number one pick (Johnny U.) was absent from most of these debates. I'm not taking anything away from Unitas, as he was surely a great QB, but I wonder how much sentimentalism played into the final analysis.

Of course, there are also a few unknown variables that should have been considered, such as the team (and coaching staff) around the QB. What could John Elway have accomplished with a Jerry Rice to throw to? Or what could he have done had he not been somewhat castrated by a Dan Reeves offense that did not play to Elway's strengths? And then there is the injury question. Should semi-debilitating injuries play into it?What could Joe Namath, like another New York sports icon, Mickey Mantle, have done with two good knees? And how is it that somewhat of a single-season phenom makes the list (Duante Culpepper), but guys like Don Meredith and Roman Gabriel didn't?

After all this surmising, the players themselves are then the focus, from number 1 to number 50. Each is discussed with their highlights and accomplishments, followed by discussions of teammates, opposing players and coaches, etc. As the numbers get bigger, the bios get shorter, but I found them all to be pretty well written.

Books like this don't settle anything. They don't answer any questions. In fact, they raise even more questions. That's what makes a book like this so entertaining. Any fan of the game will enjoy this book.Open it up, and let the debate begin.

Product Description
Last year, Brett Favre made NFL history. He became the first player to win three consecutive Most Valuable Player awards and the first to throw thirty or more touchdown passes in four straight seasons. And, again, he was voted by his peers into the Pro Bowl--the fifth time in his short seven-year career. But perhaps the most impressive statistic is that Brett Favre has the longest playing streak among all quarterbacks in the NFL. Despite a weekly pounding from playing in football's toughest division (nicknamed the "black and blue" division), he has started in 106 consecutive games and enthusiastically drives the fortunes of the Green Bay Packers. Brett Favre has fun and simply has no quit in him.

Born the son of an indomitable high school football coach and a warm but strict mother and teacher, Favre learned about inner fortitude early on. He has had his share of adversity--a car accident when he was in college that forced doctors to remove a large portion of his intestines, a notorious bar fight in the early part of his career, the death of a close friend, the rumors and doubts about his ability to win the big one. But it was admitting to himself that he was addicted to painkillers and voluntarily examining his life inside out that really brought Brett to where he is today--centered, committed, and full of excitement and determination about the future. Brett simply doesn't know any other way. Favre: For the Record is brash, straightforward, fun-loving, and deeply moving--everything fans have come to expect from Brett Favre.Amazon.com Review
This inspiring autobiography from two-time NFL Most ValuablePlayer Brett Favre provides an honest, detailed look at the author'spersonal struggles along the way to becoming a successful proquarterback. After overcoming an injury from a serious automobileaccident in college, drug addiction early in his professional career, and persistent doubts about his ability to lead the Green Bay Packersto a Super Bowl, Favre met his challenges head-on and establishedhimself as one of the sport's superstars. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars NFL/Favre Fan
Although a little disturbed by his recent actions, I have always been a Favre fan.Really enjoy how he plays the game with enthusiasm and kid-like excitement.I don't believe that can be faked...unlike some of his current media statements, including the tears.Anyway, it was good to go back and read more about him as a person and a player in more of his earlier days (some might say the 'good ol days').Clearly this book came out shortly after all the drama about his painkiller addiction. While this was an important time in his life and the message of addiction & recovery is a strong one to get out to kids and his fans, I wish the book wouldn't have focused so much of its time on that.I would have preferred more discussion about football.More indepth discussions about things like how he felt before and after games, how the bonds with his teammates were formed that produced the SuperBowl winning team that year, etc...There were some meaty chapters that focused on the football aspect--and those were my favorite parts.Would have liked a little more of that. But all in all, it was an interesting read.Particularly poignant to read of his devotion to the Green Bay fans and that organization now with all that has transpired. But hey...thats the other side of the 'game'--its a business too, right?

5-0 out of 5 stars Favre: For the Record
Wonderful, for those of us who are Packer-backers and even for those who aren't. Good history, honesty about his addiction.

5-0 out of 5 stars For The Record!(...)
First I want to say something about the book. It's great!! If your a true fan of the Packers and want to know about one of the teams, and NFLs greatest players, buy this book. It shows you the kind of person Favre is on and off the field. He takes you through the ups and downs of his life and career that have made him the person and player he is today. Now, for the other reviews I read before writing this one. What promted some numbnuts to write about the packers loss to St. Louis in the playoffs in a book review?? They must be a Bears fan! Another one decided to write that Brett and his family were (...) That's intelligent. I know when I go to read a review about a book that interests me, I want to have to wade through the garbage that idiots like that jerk take up space with. For those of you with a brain in your head, trust me, Farve: For The Record is a great read!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Book for the T.V.soaps fans
This is a good book ,the problem came from the fixation they put on his painkillers addiction and the problems it bring with his wife and teammates. You also have a lot of details about the health problems thisaddiction caused to him,a little bit like "Drugs is bad to you, seewhat it do to me."His wife almost let him down for that, his teammatesare tired of him askingfor Vicodin and others painkillers. The two orthree first paragraphs talk about that, but chapter after chapter they comeback with it.The book talk to much about his "post popularity"life and not enough of him when he was unknown. His "postpopularity" life are report in all the daily newspapers, that why Iexpect to learn more about Bret Favre before he was a star. They pass tofast on his teens years, his collegiate years. The reason to write abiography his to talk about the unknown parts of someone life, but in thisbook you just found what everybody read on the last five yearsnewspapers. That a good but incomplete book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book ever written!
Favre for The Record is the best book I ever read.It is totally a must buy. ... Read more
