Amazon.com Review
During his 16 years as an NFL quarterback, Joe Montana won four Super Bowls and the respect of fans everywhere. Hislegendary tenure with the San Francisco 49ers through the 1980s willbe remembered as one of the most dominating periods in professionalsports. And unlike many of the great quarterbacks, Montana posted boththe numbers and the big wins necessary to cement his place inthe Hall of Fame. With coauthor Richard Weiner, Montana relates hisspecial knowledge of the game in Joe Montana's Art and Magic ofQuarterbacking, a treasury of instruction, anecdotes, andinside-the-huddle information that should earn the cheers of footballfans and players everywhere.

In addition to instructionalchapters on ball-handling, offensive and defensive formations, passpatterns, and conditioning, Montana also covers the more advancedaspects of playing quarterback, such as reading defenses and callingaudibles. With examples right out of the 49er playbook, he dissectscontemporary offenses and defenses, emphasizing his points withwell-known plays and situations from his own storied career, includingpostseason classics such as "The Catch" and "TheDrive." A winning combination of color action shots andchalkboard-style diagrams--plus memorable sidebar quotes from coachesand players--makes Joe Montana's Art and Magic ofQuarterbacking an attractive and informative addition to thepigskin bookshelf. A foreword by John Madden("I'll say it without any disclaimer. Joe Montana is the greatestquarterback who ever played the game.") and a brief concludinghistory of the game serve as bonus bookends. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars This is not an instructional text
Like many of the current crop of younger football coaches, I grew up in a 1980's that was dominated at the NFL level by the West Coast Offense and the San Francisco 49ers. One of the quarterbacks of that amazing dynasty was Joe Montana, and he was very, very good at what he did.

Unfortunately, the book he authored really doesn't go in depth on how he achieved that success. Very little of the player's mechanics are covered. There is no discussion of proper arm motion when passing. There is no discussion of hip angling, receiver progression or other mechanics of function within a football play.

This book is largely a series of anecdotes about Joe's career, rather than a specific list of skills and drills for young quarterbacks. His stories are interesting, but meaningless to the coach looking to improve his players.

I strongly recommend another book by another Super Bowl winning quarterback. "Phil Simms on Passing: Fundamentals of Throwing the Football" is actually ABOUT the mechanics of throwing the ball. All the little tidbits that have been ignored by the miserable execution of the modern NFL are listed.

For example: Phil Simms discusses the importance of keeping the elbows pinned to the sides when dropping back. With both hands on the ball, this reduces the risk of a fumble if sacked by surprise from behind. The year he discovered this he dropped his fumbles from 11 the prior year to three. I was so impressed that I began using that technique with my high school program immediately; our quarterbacks have not fumbled in five years.

Phil Simms also covers the adaptation of the West Coast Offense as a precision passing attack-- so precise in fact, that he was taught, "to hit the receiver on the number away from the defender, so the receiver would know which way to turn to avoid the tackle and could gain extra yardage." These are the tips that should have been in Joe Montana's book, and were not.

Joe Montana's book barely covers the three and five step drops, ignores handoffs and faking, and brushes over roll out passing and throwing on the run. By contrast, Phil Simms's book covers one step, three step, five step, seven step, roll outs, throwing on the run, avoiding the sack, how to avoid the interception, how to throw the intentional incomplete to avoid the sack, reading the zones, reading man-to-man coverage, receiver progressions, securing the football, mechanics of a proper handoff, proper pitching/tossing, proper faking, and several other aspects of playing quarterback.

Joe Montana's book is a good read for the fan with an interest in his career, or the dad that wants to play catch with his son and maybe avoid creating bad habits by teaching incorrect mechanics, but it just doesn't have the depth that it should. For a coach with a serious agenda of improving his football team, I just can't recommend it. Look for Phil Simms's book instead. You'll get much more out of it.

5-0 out of 5 stars learning from the best...
this book is awsome. Joe Montana, probably one of the greatest QBs ever shares his tips and secrets with the readers. Montana discusses everything from certain exercises to do, how to gain more accuracy, what's kinds of defenses there are, how you should grip the football, the different passing patters, and how he used to prepare during the week for an up and coming game. he goes through his mental preparation and what he's thinking in the first quarter, the second quarter, the adjustments at the half, the third, and then the 4th quarter.
Montana also preaches unity and team. he never places himself above his teamates and always credits the people around him for his success. his offensive line, his running backs, coaches, wide recievers, and his parents.

good book for any kid interested in becoming a QB or for anyone who just needs a little inspiration.

5-0 out of 5 stars Montana is the maestro
Joe Montana gives fans of all ages the complete package of quarterbacking. He breaks down every little detail associated with the position. This should be the right hand textbook for anyone wanting to play QB. A beautiful photo gallery is depicted in each chapter.

5-0 out of 5 stars Joe knows of what he writes!
I'm admittedly certifiably crazy about football, the San Fransisco 49ers and Joe Montana. But even discounting those facts, this is one of THE best books ever written on football.Joe really KNOWS football and he and his co-writer really allow you to get INTO his head from a position underneath the center and indeed, from positions all over the field. The diagrams and Joe's explanations of all the intricacies of the game are more than worth the cost of the book, even for veteran watchers of the game.Joe is not only knowledgeable, but gracious and humorous!Having been lucky enough to talk with Joe more than once I can guarantee the truth of those three adjectives to describe him. This book was SO good I sent a copy to my friends in Germany who are also 49er fans (one really LIKES diagrams and one really LIKES Jerry Rice!)I sincerely hope Joe writes MORE books in future.Merfuff

5-0 out of 5 stars A great purchase for football fans at any level.
As a football fan, and more specifically a Joe Montana fan, this book has it all.Not only do I understand more about the game, I also have a deeper admiration for those who suit up at the quarterback position. Joe puts you on the sideline, in the huddle, and at the line of scrimmage. He's both informative and inspirational, and leaves little doubt as to why he's considered the greatest quarterback of all time. You'll learn a lot of instructional advice on how to play quarterback from Joe, but the book also puts you inside Joe's head during his many magic moments.Gordon Shumway (GMVN@aol.com) New Jersey ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Joe Montana Children's Book
The purchase was very smooth from start to finish.I'll definitely do business with them again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Joe Montana
Touchdown!!What an 11 yard touchdown to wide receiver Dwight Clark! The crowd goes wild for the San Francisco 49ers.The 49ers have beaten the cowboys by an amazing catch by Clark. This book, Joe Montana, was written by Jack Kavangh and is a biography about this famous football player. It's a good book for people who like sports. I recommend it especially for football fans.
When Joe Montana was in college he was a star. He was measured as a winning quarter back.He never lost a Super Bowl and never used only one player in a game.Joe Montana was a team player; he got everybody in the game and encouraged others to do well. I was inspired by his work and his talent. He led the 49ers to four Super Bowls and was the most valuable player of Super Bowl XVI and XXIV. After these wins, I wanted to know if he had bad times in his career.
Joe went to Ringgold high school and played three different sports. He played basketball, baseball, and football. He was a star in all three sports. I was amazed at this. This success shows that you can do what you want to do. That made Joe Montana an athlete and in shape to play any sport. His parents had pushed him in to sports to get a scholarship.Soon he did and went to Notre Dame University with a full scholarship in athletics.
In Notre Dame he was a star in football. As a freshman he made the varsity team, making him the first freshman ever to make varsity at Notre Dame. I was most inspired by this success. Playing as quarterback, Joe Montana felt he had to win every game. He even won the 1979 Cotton Bowl. After college, was the NFL for Joe Montana? He was drafted in the 3rd round to the 49ers.He had sickness problems through out seasons and games.Joe even missed one full season because he had a bad illness. But Joe Montana persevered and brought the 49ers to four Super Bowls wins.Joe Montana was a star in high school, college, and in the NFL.I think Joe Montana is a role model to kids who have big dreams like he had.
Jack Kavangh writes a good biography about Joe Montana. This book expresses how Joe Montana is and the author includes great details about his life.Joe Montana is a great book and I also recommend it to people who are looking for a role model. If I was amazed, you will be to.

5-0 out of 5 stars Football Legend
Sports Great,
Joe Montana

The Novel, Sports Great Joe Montana, by Jack Kavanah, is a 64-page book about a professional quarterback, who plays football for the San Francisco 49ers. Joe went to college at the University of Notre Dame. He there played football for the Fightin' Irish.
At the end of the freezing cold Cotton Bowl, in Houston Texas, Joe finished his final football game for the Notre Dame Fightin' Irish in his senior year in 1979.
When Joe's college career came to an end, he was literally sick of the cold weather, so he thought about moving to Southern California, for it's warmth. A year later, Joe was so fed up with the cold he actually did move all the way from South Ben, Indiana, to San Francisco, California.
Joe knew that when he moved to California, he was supposed to be taking a break from sports, but in a matter of days, Joe figured he just couldn't get enough football! That's where the undoubtedle dream of making the team for being drafted for the 49ers began.
When the brand new football season began, Joe went out for the professional game with the San Francisco 49ers.
Joe's NFL season began as a rookie, as every on else's did. The famous Notre Dame quarterback, college boy Joe Montana, also known as the "Comeback Kid," was now the starting quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers, in his first season.
In July of 1980, Joe had his first pro game against the Buffalo Bills, in Buffalo, New York. That game the 49ers trampled over the Bills, and just burnt them out!
In the year 1990, it was time for Joe's last game to come... in the Super Bowl!Against the Jets, the 49ers came to their victory, and beat the Jets. There, Joe's season, and first and final "fare well" speech approached everyone watching the spectacular game.
Joe Montana, of the San Francisco 49ers, and Notre Dame Fightin' Irish led them to some of their best seasons and games ever. He retired March of 1991.

Product Description
How many great catches have there been in the history of the NFL? Hundreds? Thousands? Mention "The Catch,"though, and fans will think of only one: Joe Montana to Dwight Clark, the NFC Championship game, the Dallas Cowboys vs. the San Francisco 49ers, January 10, 1982. It changed the game and The Game. This is the story of the pieces that fell into place to allow it to happen and what it meant to the players, to the fans, and to the future of professional football.

Drama like this couldn't be scripted any better. Dallas was still reigning as America's team. San Francisco was hungry for a ticket to its first Super Bowl. With less than a minute left, the 49ers were one touchdown and extra point away from pulling it off, six yards from the end zone. Too Tall Jones and the Cowboys' celebrated defense were primed to stop Montana and the 49ers. The play came in from head coach Bill Walsh: Sprint Right Option. It almost never worked in practice. But this was game on. It had to work. Montana took the snap and rolled right. With 700 pounds of prime defensive talent bearing down on him, leaning backward, in his last moment of upright balance, Montana sent the ball to the back of the end zone. The primary receiver had slipped and was not in place. But the secondary receiver, Dwight Clark, was streaking toward the corner, leaping higher than he ever had or ever would again. With his arms reaching for the sky, his fingers splayed, he snatched the impossibly high pass, briefly lost control, regained it . . . touchdown!

Franchises, careers, lives, and dynasties all changed in that moment.

Sports journalist Gary Myers was there, and now with fresh revelations from key players, including Montana, Clark, Ronnie Lott, Randy Cross, Tony Dorsett, Drew Pearson, Charlie Waters, and others, he takes fans back to an iconic game and one of the NFL's most breathtaking plays. Myers presents new details on the rise of Montana and the 49ers and the fall of the '80s Cowboys. He reveals what Bill Walsh saw in an overlooked third-round draft pick named Joe Montana and how Walsh accidentally discovered Dwight Clark. He shows how legendary Dallas head coach Tom Landry, who as reputed did put winning first, was not above crying over players whose personal careers had to come second. He celebrates forgotten heroes like journeyman running back Lenvil Elliott, who picked that particular game–and that final drive down the field–to shine. It's all here, from the death threat that spooked Montana during the game to 49ers owner Eddie DeBartolo's bad luck when his view of the historic play was literally blocked by a horse's ass.

The Catch is both the ultimate replay of a sports moment for the ages and a penetrating look into the inner dynamics of the NFL.

3-0 out of 5 stars Average - not as exciting as the catch was
The author offers some interesting insight into the downfall of the Cowboys and the rise of 49ers but not enough to keep my interest and certaintly not enough to make a book out of it.The author time shifts from that exciting game and play to detail the history of the players, coaches and owners involved and interviews some of the players involved. This creates some confusion as the reader has to shift gears back and forth. The writing is from a Cowboy fan slant as most of the book is about the downfall fall of the Cowboys. This is a book for diehard football fans, Cowboy fans in particular who don't mind reading once again about their team's decline during the 1980's.There is too much repetition and the writing is disjointed and can be confusing.

3-0 out of 5 stars How can you pass along a moment to your next generation?
Sports in general (not just the NFL, but also MLB, the NHL and the NBA, as well as college sports) are filled with moments that some of us are destined to remember well into the future, even as some males in the populace can't remember what some females deem importants (anniversaries, birthdays and the like). It seems to be deeply engrained in our DNA.Also seemingly engrained there is a desire to share those moments with others, to talk about them and our memories of them, discuss them, argue them and ponder the what ifs that might surround them.

In my own case, my son is someone that I'd like to share these kinds of moments with, but as new moments happen it inspires memories of older moments and the historical importance of those from that point on.

In the NFL, with NFL Films and their excellent work, many of the greatest moments in the game are archived away and brought out at appropriate times for discussion and review in television specials and such.Seeing those moments on film, with the announcer's calls can take one back to what they were doing when those events unfolded, but what is shown on the film doesn't necessarily tell all of the story. The details that lead up to events on the field may be just as fascinating as the events on the field, if someone has the time to do the research and tell the stories that go along with those moments.

It was with all of that in mind that I requested this book, figuring that perhaps my son would find the history worth learning about.Unfortunately his interest in the book wasn't what I hoped it would be, and while the contents are ok, they are not as thorough as I might have hoped.Sparce might be an appropriate word. This isn't a bad book, but it's not what I'd call a great book either.Just somewhere in the middle, and for me, not quite up to the level of the game and events it was written about.

Worth a read, but not a classic sports book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Average for a 12 year old
This book was read by a 12 year old who did not find it interesting enough to complete. I think perhaps it was because he did not know the players and did not have enough interest in historical football. I would recommend this for an older audience.

4-0 out of 5 stars More like 4 1/2 stars....
THE CATCH is one of the most famous plays in NFL history. Joe Montana's pass to Dwight Clark in the waning minutes of the NFC Championship game on January 10, 1982, has been shown in replays repeatedly. Gary Myers takes readers behind the scenes to the stories that surround THE CATCH as he examines the history of two dynasties, the San Francisco 49ers and the Dallas Cowboys.

THE CATCH is a moment that stands out to me in football history. The game between Dallas and San Francisco was the first full football game I'd ever watched and I sat anxiously glued to my television set as I began my now lifelong love of football and the 49ers. THE CATCH immortalizes that moment for me personally, but it is so much more than just the story of Dwight Clark's catch.

Gary Myers provides readers tidbits of insider history, the sort of details that a fan just watching the game might have forgotten. He also brings back the forgotten memories of the trash talking of the game, the horrendous poem recited by Drew Pearson, and the rise and demise of the careers of two of the NFL's most historic coaches, Tom Landry and Bill Walsh. The stories in THE CATCH extend far beyond just those that happened on the field that day, providing a nice context for this memorable moment in football history.

THE CATCH is a book that is easily enjoyed by football fans, but especially 49er and Cowboy fans. I've enjoyed sharing tidbits from the book with my husband, a Cowboy fan, while also appreciating the scope of knowledge Gary Myers demonstrates about both football teams. The format of the book is a bit disjointed and yet once I started reading, I had trouble putting it down. THE CATCH is a fascinating look back at a piece of football history and some of the greatest players and coaches to ever enter the game.

4-0 out of 5 stars Chock full of great nuggets, but only four stars for fans of other teams
This book is chock full of background from the era before and afterThe Catch. Think of it like a bell curve: lots of info from right around that time, plus additional info, just in lesser amounts, from other eras. Myers views The Catch as the culmination of a paradigm shift in the NFL, and does a reasonable job supporting his viewpoint, but the casual fan will mostly just enjoy the detail Myers provides in his discussions

With all that said, I'm not personally a fan of either the Cowboys or the Niners, so sometimes my attention would wander, e.g. after literally dozens of pages on Tom Landry alone: his coaching timeline, personality, and how it all built into who he was and how he coached and what kind of leader he was, how he related to both management and players, etc... as a Vikings fan I would probably eat up that sort of detail about, say, Bud Grant, but I was really getting bored after a while with Landry (and Bill Walsh for that matter as well).

Despite this complaint, the level of detail is great. I'm not sure I agree with Myers on the significance of The Catch, but he certainly does an excellent job arguing his case, and the interesting nuggets he provides here make it a worthwhile read for any NFL fan, and especially Niner and Cowboy fans. ... Product Description
Widely considered the best NFL quarterback of all time, Joe Montana personifies performance excellence and personal integrity both on and off the field. Yet the word most closely associated with him is not “winner”–it’s “leader.” Since his retirement a decade ago, he has become a popular motivational speaker sought out by corporations nationwide, speaking to capacity audiences as large as twenty thousand.

Now making his message available to a broader audience, Montana teams up with performance coach Tom Mitchell to extend to all areas of life the truths of success on the field. The Winning Spirit shows that ultimately performance excellence is fueled by personal integrity. This is the key to winning the inner game, which is about accountability and attitude, as well as desire, enthusiasm, effort, and appreciation. For example:

• Know What You Want: First, identify goals, then turn clarity into action.
• Strive for Excellence: Surpass expectations and reach new heights
• Fail Fast and Move On: Take chances, learn from mistakes, and keep pressing forward–don’t let fear or regret take you out of the game.
• Remember the “I” in Team: Make yourself the priority–because intense preparation is the individual responsibility of each member of the team.
• Welcome Pressure: Want to be the best? Work with or compete against the best!
• Walk Like a Champ: Your life is not just about achieving success, but also about having a purpose and creating significance.

With great stories and practical strategies, Joe Montana and Tom Mitchell give us hard-won advice based on years of success. This timely and timeless message is nothing less than a contemporary motivational classic. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Expectations vs. Reality
Expectations vs. Reality applies here. What do you expect when you buy a book entitled "The Winning Spirit, #16" by Joe Montana? (For those readers who don't happen to follow football, specially football in San Francisco, you might want to know that Joe was one of the best quarterbacks in the game in history! He drove the San Francisco 49er's to several Superbowl wins.) So, I'm expecting some kind of biography or life story (which BTW, would be interesting). Well, surprise! That's not what this book is about!!

In Joe's after-football-life, he and partners went into capital investing and then eventually into training sessions on performance. He and partners are also into business coaching of executives. So, in reality, this book turns out to be a rather interesting and well written training class on team building and executive leadership. Believe me, I've read alot of these kind of books! What I like about this book is that it focuses on teamwork and teambuilding. Drawing from Joe's football experience (and his co-author's basketball coaching experience), they successfully map between sports and business. A pretty easy book to get thru and relatively easy on the brain, it does give a nice set of 15 guidelines with alot of examples and suggestions. In fact, I often found myself saying, "hey I do that!"

Bottom line, yeah, a pretty good business book focusing on teamwork and teambuilding. Oh yeah, GO NINERS!

3-0 out of 5 stars Wow!
I'm way to smart to take advice from Joe Montana and some guy I've never heard of who are just out to make a quick buck! I'm not going to buy it.

It's the only book available to listen that I am remotely interested in from the Chicago Public Library this week? OK...bring it on.

Wait? I forgot, I like Joe! Oh, right, he was one of the greatest of all time! This other bloke, he seems to know a thing or two.

I'm being motivated! By Joe Montana and the other guy! The seem to have some good advice. I'll listen again. Wow, the 16 principles all work, all inspire and the practice work is helpful! Yes, Joe and other guy, why don't business people practice? Why not?

A good book by what some say is the greatest of all time. Glad I found it. ... Read more
