Excerpt:Norman Walter "Norm" Smith (born 21 November 1915 at Clifton Hill, Victoria; died 29 July 1973 at Pascoe Vale, Victoria) was an Australian rules football player and coach in the Victorian Football League. After 200 games as a player with Melbourne and Fitzroy, Smith began a twenty year coaching career, including a fifteen year stint at Melbourne. Recognised as the father of modern Australian football coaching, Smith coached Melbourne to six premierships and in 1996 was chosen as the coach of the AFL Team of the Century. Smith and his elder brother Len (born 9 February 1912) were the sons of ironworker Victor Smith and Ethel May (née Brown). After attending Westgarth Central School, Smith completed an engineering apprenticeship and worked at Millers rope-works in Brunswick. In 1943 he took over his father's engineering business in Northcote, later relocating it to North Coburg in 1954. On 19 October 1940 he married Marjorie Victoria Ellis, at the Wesley Church in Melbourne. Their only child, Peter, was born in 1947. Excerpt: Johnny Majors (born May 21, 1935 in Lynchburg, Tennessee) is a former standout tailback at the University of Tennessee and was also a longtime head football coach for Tennessee, Iowa State University, and the University of Pittsburgh. Majors was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame as a player in 1987. Majors played high school football for the Huntland Hornets of Franklin County, Tennessee. They won the state championship in 1951. Majors' father, Shirley Majors, was the head coach at Huntland from 19491957. Majors also played alongside his brother, Joe, at Huntland. A triple-threat tailback at the University of Tennessee, one of the last schools to use the single-wing rather than some version of the T formation, Majors was an All-American and runner-up for the Heisman Trophy in 1956.
