5-0 out of 5 stars Reggie White:In The Trenches
Let me start by saying that I'm a 13 year old boy and that Reggie White is my hero. I bought this book looking to learn more about my hero's life and I really struck gold.

Reggie White tells you about his entire life in this autobiography. He starts with an Introduction called "Promise Kept", which I particularly enjoyed. He then tells about his childhood, College days with the University of Tennessee, his Memphis Showboat Days, the USFL's fold and his move to the NFL's Philadelphia Eagles (my favorite team), and then his move to the Packers.

In between that though he tells stories of God and his miracles on the football field and about Buddy Ryan and the players he would go into the trenches with any day.

He also writes about the death of Jerome Brown, stories of God, how he didnt want to leave his teammates of the Eagles but had to because of the ignorance of Norman Braman, and much much more.

This is perhaps my favorite book I've read so far, and I enjoy reading.
I strongly recommend this book to anyone who is a fan of the NFL in general. Reggie White is a true NFL Legend and my hero.

5-0 out of 5 stars Reggie -- and this book -- changed my life
I don't know where I'd be today without the witness of the late Reggie White. I suppose the answer is that God would have used someone or something else to crack open my hard heart, but I will still be eternally grateful to Reggie - not only for writing this excellent football book, but more important for always wearing his heart for the Lord on his sleeve, in plain sight for any observant fan.

5-0 out of 5 stars REGGIE WAS A TRUE GENTLEMAN
THIS IS THE STORY OF REGGIE WHITE FORMER NFL GREAT. THIS IS A GOOD READ FOR EVERYONE, NOT JUST FOOTBALL FANS. REGGIE TELLS US OF HIS LIFE AND CAREER WITH THE EAGLES AND PACKERS, ALONG THE WAY HE HAS SOME GREAT STORIES ABOUT FORMER COACHES AND TEAMATES. BUT THE MOST IMPORTANT MESSAGE IN THIS BOOK IS HOW TO LIVE A CHRISTIAN LIFE. REGGIE WAS A DEVOUT CHRISTIAN AND SPREAD THE WORD. HE NOT ONLY TALKED THE TALK BUT WALKED THE WALK. THE LESSONS AND MESSAGES IN THIS BOOK ARE WELL WORTH READING AND USING IN EVERYDAY LIFE. I WAS VERY SHOCKED TO LEARN OF REGGIE'S DEATH. HE WAS A GREAT ROLE MODEL FOR EVERYONE. I RECOMMEND THIS ANYONE AND EVERYONE TO READ. THERE ARE NOT ENOUGH REGGIE WHITES IN THIS WORLD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book About Reggie White's Football Career and His Christian Witness!
"I've never seen any conflictbetween Christianity and football. I don't see football as a violent sport; I see it as aggressive. And I see Christianity as an aggressive faith." (pg. 189).

IN THE TRENCHES spends tons of time talking about what made Reggie White famous, FOOTBALL, and what he thinks is most important for him to do with his football success, use it to promote JESUS!

"...three words--IN THE TRENCHES--sum it all up for me. I live my life in the trenches. I do my work in the trenches. I serve my God in the trenches. I go to war against evil, poverty, racism, and injustice in the trenches." (pg. 22)

Reggie talks about how he grew up. He was the second son of a teenage mother, who seldom saw his father. He was always much larger than other kids his age, and they called him names like "Bigfoot" and "Land of the Giants." He got saved when he was 13, and he would point out what the Bible said to bad kids who were doing things like always telling lies.

He claims O.J. Simpson as his childhood inspiration and main reason that he wanted to play football, even though this book was written after the famous murders?

He toughened himself up for football, to prove wrong the folks who said he couldn't handle it because he's a Christian!

He talks about playing in the USFL and the NFL, for the Showboats, Eagles and Packers. This book was written before he won the Super Bowl with the Packers. He spends plenty of pages giving many details about many different games. Sometimes it gets a little too long for me, so if you are interested in hearing about his football career, then this is the book for you! "Sacks are fun, man. There's nothing like throwing a quarterback down for a big loss." (pg. 83). He also talks about being one of the first really big stars to go into Free Agency, which was not popular with the team owners of the time! "The owners who screamed the loudest about free agency were the owners of the notoriously tightwad teams--the Eagles, the Bengals, the Steelers." (pg. 127).

He details the times when God pulled off public miracles to heal him to play. He also discusses how God used his football fame to bring to the public eye the problem of church arsons in the South, by having Reggie's church get burned down, which brought national media attention, and plenty of extra love and support from Green Bay fans, and from across the nation.

There are many b/w photos in the middle of the book, so you get to see many of the family and friends discussed.

This book is better than Reggie White's later book, BROKEN PROMISES, BLINDED DREAMS, which is mostly about his thoughts concerning African-Americans in the USA. BROKEN PROMISES focuses mainly on what's wrong with the immoral US culture, these days, so you should read BROKEN PROMISES if you are interested in social activism and the African-American experience, from Reggie White's perspective.

He only briefly touches on the culture wars in this book, IN THE TRENCHES, "Nobody's preaching abstinence today because nobody's figured out how to get rich off of other people's abstinence--but there's plenty of money to be made from other people's sexual activity...[...]..sexually transmitted diseases...aborting unwanted babies...Much of the money spent on various aspects of people's sexual behavior is TAX money--money you and I shell out to the government, money that is spent without our say-so!" (pg. 217).

At the end of the book he give tips on how to be a good role model.

I am a Reggie White fan, because I like what he did with his football fame, using it to promote Christianity throughout his entire career, and way before and after his pro football days, as well!

I think this is the best Reggie White book that I have read, though I can also recommend BROKEN PROMISES for anybody who is intrigued by the activist aspect of Reggie White's life.

There is also a pretty decent book of photos called REGGIE WHITE: A CELEBRATION OF LIFE, 1961-2004. This is slim on text, but has many interesting photos of his pro football years.

"When I face the final judgment, God isn't going to ask me how many Pro Bowls I played in or ask me to recite my stats. He's going to ask me if I knew Jesus, and if I helped to bind up the wounds of people." (pg. 195, IN THE TRENCHES).

5-0 out of 5 stars In The Trenches by Reggie White
I found this book very interesting I learned a lot about Reggie White.I wish that he was still with the Green Bay Packers.I am a huge Green Bay Packer fan. This book had a lot of interesting stuff in it.For example I never knew that one of his favorite players growing up was O.J. Simpson.Reggie said in the book that O.J. Simpson was like a moving target for defensive linemen; he said, that was one of the reasons that he wanted to play defensive end.I also learned that he really liked his coach Buddy Ryan when he played with the Philadelphia Eagles ,and when Buddy Ryan got fired Reggie couldn't figure out why he got fired; he said Buddy Ryan was a good coach.Reggie also talked about his church getting burned. He also talked about his friend and teammate Jerome Brown who was killed a car accident and he thought he was a really great person and he said he misses him.I learned a lot from reading this book. This book is one of my favorite books that I read.I would recommend this book to every Green Bay Packer fan. ... Product Description
Reggie White's premature death last Christmas shocked the sports world. How could this phenomenal fortress of muscle and mind exit so young at 43? Those who observed him from a distance will forever freeze in time the pinnacle moment of White's professional football career: a champion ball-capped, T-shirted White jogging around the perimeter of the Louisiana Superdome and holding high the trophy he and the Green Bay Packers had just earned in Super Bowl XXXI.

While many NFL greats leave an indelible stamp on the field, not as many make their marks as exemplary human beings. Those closest to Reggie clearly saw that distinction. I Remember Reggie White presents the recollections and favorite stories of this dynamic minister and pro football's Minister of Defense as captured in more than two dozen interviews with teammates, friends, coaches, acquaintances, and members of the media. The narrative spans his career from his days at Chattanooga (Tenn.) Howard High School, the University of Tennessee, and the defunct USFL Memphis Showboats through his NFL days with the Philadelphia Eagles and the Green Bay Packers.

Reggie White left behind a massive legacy. A thirteen-time Pro Bowler and consensus two-time Defensive Player of the Year, he retired as the NFL's all-time sack leader. Selected to the NFL's 75th Anniversary All-Time Team in 1994, he still holds the Super Bowl single-game sack record.

While football became his burning ambition at a young age, an equally passionate devotion to God and a genuine dedication to ministering resulted in Reggie's ordination as a Baptist minister at age 17. Often controversial for his observations on race and religion, he spent much of his time after retirement from pro football following the 2000 season studying Hebrew and translating the original Old Testament text. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Different Approach To A Biography
The late Reggie White gave us this interesting biography. He divided his life into three categories:Football, Faith, and Family.I find this approach interesting.

The faith segment is actually a half dozen sermons, dealing with issues in the Christian faith.I would be surprised if anyone familiar with Reggie White is unfamiliar with the fact that he was a minister in addition to being a hall of fame defensive end.

I would very highly recommend this book to all. ... Read more

Product Description
The life and career of Reggie White is remembered in this new book, Reggie White: A Celebration of Life, 1961- 2004. Fans can look back through the career of the "Minister of Defense" from his early days with the Philadelphia Eagles, to his glory days with the Green Bay Packers, to his retirement and untimely death in December, 2004.

Reggie White had a football career that will certainly place him among the all-time greatest defensive ends in NFL history. He was also the NFL's all-time sack leader at the time of his retirement in 2000. More than just a football player, Reggie White was an ordained minister and worked in developing programs for urban youth. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Reggie White, A Celebration of Life, 1961-2004
This book was purchased for a school project. It was perfect. It has Reggie's White's life broken down into a categories and then provides details. It was easy to follow. The book is also full of photos from throughout his life.It was also full of quotes from people that knew him.It wasn't just a road map of his life, it was reflective and emotional. My son wears his Reggie tee proudly!

5-0 out of 5 stars Uneven, Poorly Edited, Yet Still Enjoyable
This book is very uneven as a biography. It is about 127 pages long. It is mostly a book of photos. What is here is enjoyable, but there is a lot missing about his life.

There seems to be no author. You get a brief synopsis of major events in his life, from birth to death, in about 5 pages. Then most of the chapters are reprinted articles with the dates and authors named, mostly sports writers of the times, I suppose.

The coverage is uneven, only a few pages about college with no photos of Reggie; 8 pages about the Philadelphia Eagles era of his life; the largest era covered is with the Green Bay Packers, about 70 pages; then 12 pages with Reggie and the Carolina Panthers; ending with about 20 pages covering his untimely death.

There are over 60 decent photos of Reggie, most being half page sized, or full page sized. Some photos are two page size, others are small photos. There's too many other photos of fans and such, which I think are a waste of space. Only the photo of his father after a public visitation after Reggie's death is interesting, of the photos without Reggie in them.

There are lots of quotes, in large text, sprinkled throughout the book, mostly from famous or prominent people in Reggie's life, but a few too many are generic, anonymous internet fan quotes, of which only one I found interesting:

"My favorite Reggie moment was during the run for the Super Bowl, at the home games they had a clip of Reggie singing 'AMAZING GRACE,' and how that short clip made the whole stadium stop, listen, and sing along, and afterwards we wanted to see Reggie drop another quarterback."--internet fan quote

This is my first book about Reggie White that I have bought and read. I will continue to get the few other books about him, some actually written by Reggie himself. This book is worth having for any Reggie White fan, but you will probably find it to be uneven, just as I have. Having said that, if you are still interested, then the book is worth the price on amazon.com.

Product Description
Though he is the NFL's all-time sack leader, a Super Bowl champion, and a future Hall of Famer, Reggie White believes his true mission in life is spreading the Word of God. In God's Playbook, White makes the Bible's timeless message come alive, clearly illustrating how its ancient principles remain relevant today. White shares his own experiences on and off the football field, drawing valuable lessons from sports legends -- Michael Jordan, Jackie Robinson, Hank Aaron, and Dr. J. -- biblical heroes -- Jesus, David, Moses, and Lazarus -- as well as the unsung coaches, ministers, and mentors who have influenced him personally. For sports fans and non-sports fans alike, God's Playbook is an instructional and inspirational guide to living a rich and rewarding life. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Who is the real hypocrite?
Professor Mazel is the real hypocrite here. He's not a Christian and doesn't know anything about Christian theology. As a former student, I think he's a disgusting pervert with a hatred for morals and the sanctity of life--anything but Christian. He seems to be a literal who hates anything conservative. And the worst thing he can claim is Reggie White broke the Sabbath?

Anyone who has done their homework would know that the 7th day (Saturday) was the Sabbath under Old Testament law: "but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the LORD your God. In it you shall do no work" - Exodus 20:10

Besides that, many Christians believe we are no longer under the Sabbath law because it was fulfilled by Jesus. We believe our Sabbath (which means rest) rest is in our Salvation through Christ and the rest we will have in heaven.

Just read Hebrews 3-4.

Also see Colossians 2:16-17:
"Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink, or with regard to a religious festival, a New Moon celebration or a Sabbath day. These are a shadow of the things that were to come; the reality, however, is found in Christ."

4-0 out of 5 stars A Decent Devotional And Study Book From A Unique Perspective
This is a very good book.I did enjoy it.

This book has 51 studies in a dozen categories. This would make a good devotional. This also would make a good study class, especially for a youth group.Reggie White, unlike most ministers and devotional writers, was a pro athlete, and this gives a unique perspective.

The reason it dropped down to four stars instead of five is its approach.Bible studies and devotionals and Christian books can take one of two approaches:1) it starts with Scripture and gets to the meaning of the text and then gives thoughts and stories to help illustrate the text, or 2) it is the thoughts of the author with Scripture given to give authority to his thoughts. Many of these devotionals fit into the second category. This does not mean I disagree with Reggie. It just comes across as being him speaking, as opposed to a true Biblical exposition.

One thing that is interesting. On pages 135-137 he talks about "Tough Times Don't Last", talks about a friend dying young, then concludes that he does not fear death and wants his family to celebrate his life when he leaves this earth. That turned out to be prophetic.

One other thing I wanted to comment.Reggie White was not afraid to admit his shortcomings. He did not portray himself as a person who never has problems, who always practices what he preaches. We need to give others the same impression, with a willingness to be vulnerable.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of The Most Bible Literate Men to Have Lived!
Reggie White was a man of conviction. He was not concerned about wordly beleifs, his focus was on the wishes of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ! For Jesus himself said "you will be persecuted for your beleif in me" and Reggie certainly has. For clarification, the true sabbath is from sundown Friday, to sundown Saturday. Man, not God chose Sunday! It floors me when people with an agenda will spout anything that furthers their cause. Shame on the previous 2 reveiws, the tounge is definately your biggest problem. That is also in the Bible, maybe you should purchase one to read! Awesome honest Book! God Bless all who read it, and discern with actual scripture in hand.

5-0 out of 5 stars Preach it, brother! I like that!
This caught my attention! It's not an autobiography, but then again, it is in a sense. It is a book of day by day devotionals by an awesome man who loves The Lord. Hey, he takes the approach from different experiences he has had. This was a very simple approach to a devotional, and that's what it was meant to be. What a pity that people still feel the need to bash this man. He deserves to be praised!

Reggie White, awesome book! Keep it up. He will certainly hear the words, "Well done, good and faithful servant!" Because in the midst of all the controversy, despite the petty name calling, Reggie White is on the right side! Preach it, brother!! I like that!!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Truth About Reggie's Legacy
This book was an absolute joy to read. It really makes you think about hoe to better yourself. It also of course mentions the game of football and the truth about how football players actually want to use their wealth and fame to help the less fortunate. A must read in my book!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Reggie White In the Trenches
Reggie White is a football player who shows his faith in God.In this book it teaches about God.And about the amazing life of Reggie White.I enjoyed reading it because I like football and it was exciting and fun.

2-0 out of 5 stars Wasn't there supposed to be some football involved?
Hmmm... ever read one of those books that you THOUGHT was going to be about football, and instead it turned out to be a maudlin diatribe of religious proselytization? Oh, then you read this book ,too, huh?

This book was mostly a waste of time. If you like football, you'll be disapointed by the lack of the sport included in it's pages. If you like the Eagles, you'll be upset at the way Reggie verbally trashes them in this book.

I don't recommend it for anyone with a serious love of the game. If you're a Bible-thumping religion nut, then this book is right up your alley. ... Read more
