Extractions: Derek Balling: Critical, Cynical, Sarcastic, and Usually Correct Main December 11, 2002 Baseball Stadium Names This is why you'll never see the Yankees, or any other team with "class" selling naming rights to their stadium. Let's assume that five years from now, Verizon buys SBC. So then we have a stadium that in eight years ends up with three names. If you want to reminisce about Barry Bonds' record-breaker, you'll end up boggling, "that was at a home game in San Francisco, was it SBC Park? Pac Bell Park? Verizon Park?" Nobody has to think back to wonder what stadium Gehrig played at. It was Yankee Stadium. Period. Or where Yaz put in his years. It was Fenway. Period. Teams which sell naming rights basically piss on the future memories of what happens there. Kids who've grown up to see Pac Bell Park (or others) have six or seven names aren't going to necessarily remember "what the park was called then"... they'll just remember "ahhh, it was a home game", or if it was an away game, it'll be like "it was in San Francisco". Show some class. Name a stadium and leave it at that. If you want to rename it for some famous person or player (e.g., if a famous player dies and the team wants to honor the player or something), that's one thing. That's a one-time thing and you expect that the

Operation Shutdown be a man, and accept the competition as a chance to show the Pirates that he isa deserving baseball player. So go ahead derek bell, commence Operation http://g-sports.netfirms.com/g-sports/article9.html
Extractions: "Operation Shutdown" March 19, 2002 Preparations for Operation Shutdown are well under way. President Bush must be alerted and the military must be aligned in position. It's finally time to take care of the pressing issues in today's uncertain world. No, not foreign affairs. Instead, it's time to go into the tank for Pittsburgh Pirate outfielder Derek Bell. Why, you ask? Well, the Pittsburgh front office had the audacity to tell Bell that his slated right field position was no longer going to be handed to him during spring training. Instead, he will have to earn his position in the starting lineup, like many other ballplayers across the country. Egads! What was Bell's response to this horribly unreasonable claim? Operation Shutdown. Pirates general manager Dave Liitlefield stated that Bell would be in competition with Armando Rios, Craig Wilson, and Rob Mackowiak for Pittsburgh's 2002 starting right field position. Bell was in total disbelief upon learning of the his new circumstances. He was quoted as stating, "If it ain't settled with me out there, then they can trade me. I ain't going out there to hurt myself in spring training battling for a job. If it is (competition for the starting job), then I'm going into Operation Shutdown." Let me preface my analysis with this profound statement: Derek Bell is a moron. Last season, Bell played only 46 out of a possible 162 game schedule. In that quarter of a season's worth of games, he batted a miniscule .173, with 13 RBIs, 14 runs, and 5 homeruns. How does he have the ego to state, with numbers like that, he deserves a free pass to start? He should merely feel privileged to have a job in pro ball all together. I can hear the cynics saying it now, it's about the money, right? Wrong. Bell signed a guaranteed two year $9 million contract before last season. Whether he starts or not, Bell will get his paycheck. For once, it is truly not about the millions of dollars thrown at athletes. So, what is this nonsense all about, you ask?

WHAT TO LOOK FOR THIS SEASON: RUMOR MILL: John Vander Wal has asked to be traded in the wake of the signing of Derek Bell. General manager Cam Bonifay says he will do nothing to honor Vander Wal's request at this point, but the situation bears watching in spring training. THE PRESSURE IS ON: The Pirates felt they needed Derek Bell's presence to fill out their outfield, and perhaps they do. Bell apparently has been given the right field job, but that has angered John Vander Wal, who hit 24 homers and drove in 94 runs mostly playing there last season. Also, youngsters Adrian Brown and Chad Hermanson are looking at limited playing time or another trip back to the minors with Bell around. Extractions: So, you noticed where both Brent Mayne and Derek Bell suddenly became pitchers on Tuesday. And while Mayne was simply dazzling in his first appearance on the mound (he recorded the win in the Rockies' 7-6 victory over the Braves), Bell was simply dreadful (he allowed five runs on three hits while walking three in the Mets' 16-1 loss to the Padres). We watched both very closely and thought, what the heck, let's break down these two budding pitchers-in-waiting. Brent

Extractions: David Wells could have chosen to bask in the glow of the shutout he pitched Thursday a little longer. But the lefthander reopened the controversy surrounding his autobiography Friday by revealing in a radio interview that he offered to quit in spring training and had to be talked out of it by Yankees manager Joe Torre. The Yankees have been dodging raindrops and low temperatures for most of the last week, but no games were lost until Friday night's series opener against Tampa Bay was postponed after a 16-minute wait. The game will be made up as part of a day- night doubleheader on June 17, with the first game at 1:05 p.m. and the regularly scheduled game at 7:05.
