5-0 out of 5 stars THE HOMERUN KING

The book hank Aaron was published in 1992 and written by James tackach. This book was written to tell people about hank Aaron and his life as a person and professional baseball player. He was not just any player though; he was one of the greatest people ever to play the game. He started his career as a 22-year-old rookie and finished at the age 45. and this is his story.
He started out playing for the Milwaukee where he was abused for being African American and being exceptionally good. He was abused for going on track to beating babe ruths homerun record (who was not only of a white race but also was known as the homerun king at that time). He also won the outfield golden glove award for playing outstanding outfield. He not only played baseball for the Milwaukee braves he also went to the Atlanta braves and then backs to Milwaukee to play for the brewers (they changed their mascot).
Henry Aaron's stats or hank Aaron were amazing, he once had a .300 batting average for 14 games in a row and many people don't come across that. In his career he averaged 33 homeruns a season and 100 RBI's, which is astounding, but he became a legend and hero on April 8, 1974 when he beat babe Ruth's homerun record and became the homerun king. Hank had 715 and the babe had 714. This is what put Henry (hank) Aaron in the hall of fame and made him a hero to people everywhere.
Hank Aaron went on to end his career as the homerun king by hitting 755 homeruns and beating the babe by 41, and no one has beat him since.

4-0 out of 5 stars Baseball fans from 8 to 80 . A real treasure!

Book Description
At the time of Hank Aaron's birth in 1934, Babe Ruth reigned as baseball's home run king, and the Negro Leagues were an African American's only hope of playing professional baseball. Latent hopes for a different future thrived on Carver Park in Alabama, however, where a young Hank Aaron was soon to be seen perfecting the powerful stroke that would later make him one of the greatest hitters and most revered players in the history of the game. The owner of over 3,000 career base hits, the winner of two batting titles and one world championship, and the all time RBI leader and home run king, Hank Aaron began his historic career integrating the South Atlantic League, and spent much of his professional tenure as a member of the only major league team in the South. Despite the animosity that thus surrounded him both at home and on the road, Aaron never ceased to excel, and even achieved his most enduring feat-breaking Babe Ruth's career home run record-under threats to his own life. This enlightening biography provides a stunning portrait of one of the great hitters and great men of major league baseball history. It has been said that hitting a baseball is the hardest thing in professional sports. Baseball's All-Time Greatest Hitters presents biographies on Greenwood's selection for the 12 best hitters in Major League history, written by some of today's best baseball authors. These books present straightforward stories in accessible language for the high school researcher and the general reader alike. Each volume includes a timeline, bibliography, and index. In addition, each volume includes a "Making of a Legend" chapter that analyses the evolution of the player's fame and (in some cases) infamy. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An outstanding survey of an outstanding key player
Charlie Vascellaro's Hank Aaron follows the developments of one of the greatest hitters in baseball history. When Aaron was born in 1934, Babe Ruth was baseball's home run king and the Negro Leagues were the only hope Aaron had of playing professional baseball. Aaron established thirteen Major League career records for both home runs and RBI and even broke Ruth's career home run record - despite death threats. An outstanding survey of an outstanding key player.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book about Aaron, Baseball, and America
This inspirational new biography takes a fresh look and gives an even-handed account of the life and career of baseball's All-Time Home Run King Hank Aaron from a contemporary perspective.
Hank Aaron's story is not only about the triumph of one man, but also represents the spiritual growth and enlightenment of America as the country came to terms with its continuing struggle to realize its promise of liberty and justice for all during the turbulent years of the Civil Rights Movement.
Aaron's baseball career ran concurrently with African-Americans struggle for equal rights and by his words and deeds he became a leader for an underrepresented portion of American society and catalyst for change. More than thirty years have passed since Aaron set the All-Time home run record and this book is an opportunity for new generation of baseball fans to learn of his accomplishments on and off the field.
Vascellaro delivers Aaron's story in direct language that is easily accessible to both adult and young adult readers. In this day of inflated statistics, Aaron's consistent performance at the plate as holder of baseball's most hallowed record remains the sport's quintessential benchmark.
Aaron's story is truly the American Dream come true. Like it reads in author Vascellaro's introduction: If a poor, black child from rural Alabama, raised in a ramshackle shack without plumbing and electricity, could grow up to be the all-time home run king, then anything is possible!

Book Description
Shrouded in mystery for decades, Cuban baseball has become the final frontier for fans of the sport in America. An unprecedented collection of photographs, statistics, and lore, Smoke explores the depth and range of the island's baseball heritage - from its origins in the 1870s, to Babe Ruth and Ty Cobb's barnstorming tours, to Fidel Castro and the Cold War that closed off access, to Orlando "El Duque" Hernandez of the world-champion 1998 Yankees. The combined efforts of Latin baseball's leading historian and the recognized authority on baseball images provide an exciting reading and viewing experience, bringing to life a rich baseball culture that has remained hidden. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Baseball Book
To begin with, my father is prominently featured in the same photo twice (alas, no photo caption). Loved the photo. This book has always been one of my favorite baseball books (my dad loved it too), because it is more of a picture-book. The colorful cover, the photos inside. Baseball just comes alive in this book for me. For statistics and other records, I might go to other books, but in general, SMOKE is the one I recommend to baseball fans.

1-0 out of 5 stars Cape Codder
I didn't intend to read this book, but I was studying Cuban baseball and I thought it might help. It didn't. There is nothing new in this book regarding Cuban baseball prior to 1960 that hasn't been told over and over again in dozens of other books. In my opinion, the primary objective of this book is to propagandize Castro's amateur baseball league. Bjarkman has been trying to mythologize Cuba's amateur baseball league for over a decade now, but that myth has been destroyed in recent years. Cuban domination of world amateur baseball is similar to Russia's domination of world amateur hockey during the cold war years. There are no professional baseball players in Cuba. Everyone is an amateur. But when those amateurs have left the cozy confines of the Cuban amateur leagues, they have been found wanting. Their two greatest pitchers, Livan and Orlando Hernandez, are good major league pitchers, but they are nowhere close to Hall of Fame material. And they were Cuba's greatest. Other Cuban players, like Rolando Arrojo and Rey Ordonez, failed miserably in the major leagues. And Omar Linares, 'Cuba's greatest player ever', according to Bjarkman, was a complete bust when he tried to compete against minor league players in Japan. This book is a pleasant photo journal, nothing more. But the title is appropriate. The book is all 'smoke' with no substance.

4-0 out of 5 stars Baseball in Cuba
"Smoke" should not be your only book on Cuban baseball. Nonetheless, it's a wonderful book. It's a comprehensive look at baseball in Cuba. The pictures are astonishing. I just returned from a short stay in Cuba. Cubans I met were transfixed by this book, so compelled were they by the pictures of their athlete-heroes. The text by Bjarkman, an expert on Latin-American baseball who has written widely on the subject, is a bit repetitive but on the whole lively and informative. The book badly needs an index. I gave my copy to a (most grateful) Cuban friend and have purchased another. It's a book I would give to any of my friends who enjoy the game in its international dimension.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best ever baseball books I read...
¡Este libro es un jonrón soberbio! (In Spanish: This book is a superb HR!)
From the introduction of "beisbol" into Cuba until the "socialization" of the ball passing over the glories of the Almendares Alacranes and the Havana Leones, the book comprises very well without forgetting any thing.
Very well elected photos to illustrated the stuff and a quase-novelesque prose to follow a rich baseball history like the Cuban ball.

I regarded SMOKE as a pearl in my particular library.

5-0 out of 5 stars ITS ABOUT TIME
The controversial book about Cuban beisbol is a hit with me. I am the grandson of a cuban baseball player. (NO MY GRAND-FATHER IS NOT MARTIN DIHGO) My grandfather was Strike Gonzalez. As my father use to tell me hewas the best in his time. I am glad a book like this was published. Notbecause I hate Fidel or love him. Just because its about CUBAN BEISBOL.This sport means so much to our people that it is refreshing to live in thestates and find such a book.Good job. ... Read more

Product Description
Hank Aaron is synonymous with home runs, but there was much more to Hammerin' Hank than his 755 roundtrippers. He at one time held all-time marks for most games and at-bats, is still the lifetime leader in total bases and RBI, and his batting average over 23 seasons was .305indications of the all-around ability of this quiet man from Mobile. The National League MVP in 1957, he appeared in a record 24 All-Star contests with the Braves (Milwaukee and Atlanta) and Brewers. This official MLB baseball is a priceless collector's piece. 4-0 out of 5 stars hank aaron
"Aaron could hit anybody, and for a skinny kid he was pretty strong." That was one of the many quotes from Hank's teammates featured in this biography. The vast amount of quotes is one of the reasons that I would recommend this book. I also would recommend it because it tells the legendary story of one of the most under appreciated and possibly the best baseball player ever. It was a very interesting book for a baseball fan like me. I learned many facts as the book is packed with information. I would enjoy non-fiction books like this one because I know what I'm reading is true. The book was very well written. I liked it a lot and I hope you read it too. ... Read more

Amazon.com
Twenty-five seasons after shattering baseball's sacred standard for career home runs, the game's most overlooked superstar bangs out the kind of celebratory volume his brilliant career deserves. While Hank Aaron is a center-stage contributor throughout this rich testament of words and images, its real power is in the all-star lineup that goes to bat for his achievements--both on and off the field. Names from within and beyond baseball, teammates and opponents alike--Jimmy Carter, Bob Gibson, Warren Spahn, Rachel Robinson, Jesse Jackson, Yogi Berra, Bob Costas, and Willie Mays for starters--all tip their caps to a man of uncanny consistency, persistence, and modesty. He needed all of that, of course, to chase down Babe Ruth.

It would be nice to look back and recall how the nation got behind Aaron in his solitary pursuit. The sad truth, as Home Run inspiringly recounts, is that it didn't. In his quest for the record, Aaron not only came face to face with the ghost of The Bambino; he also had to look squarely into the ugly eye of the specter of racism. Simply by doing his job as well as he could, Aaron stared them both down with his will, courage, pride, and decency. Jesse Jackson sums up the man, and the chase, with marvelous simplicity: "[Aaron] didn't hit a home run to take dignity away from the pitcher. He hit a home run to assert his skill." Home Run is a lovely reminder of that assertion. --Jeff SilvermanBook Description
Home Run is a vivid glimpse into the life of one of the most memorable figures in sports history. Twenty-five years after shattering Babe Ruth's career home run mark, Hank Aaron offers his thoughts on being a hero, on the game of baseball, and on our times.
