Excerpt: MLB Records Pack Robert "Bob" Gibson (born November 9, 1935) is a former right-handed baseball pitcher, who played his entire professional career for the St. Louis Cardinals from 1959 to 1975. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1981. Gibson was a fierce competitor who rarely smiled and was known to throw brushback pitches to let batters know who was in charge, similar to his contemporary and fellow Hall of Famer Don Drysdale. Even so, Gibson had good control and hit only 102 batters in his career (fewer than Drysdale's 154). Revered by St. Louis baseball fans, Gibson dominated with his fastball, sharp slider and a slow, looping curveball. He now resides in the Omaha suburb of Bellevue with his wife and son, and is a special instructor co...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=367170 ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Forgotten Great Player
Richie Asburn was a beloved Phillie.Due to the franchise's lowly status, it took him 33 years after retiring to be inducted into Cooperstown. For those who saw him play, Ashburn was one of the best center fielders of his generation and adored in Philadelphia. After his playing days, he became a broadcaster for the Phillies, endearing himself to another generation for his work beind the microphone.

A devoted Phillies fan, Fran reminds us just how great Richie was and what he meant to the team and city.A solid book looking back at the low-key but stellar career of a legend.

Bought this book for my father, who absolutely adores it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful tribute to a wonderful player
This really does show the life of Ashburn. The letter from Harry Kalas in the beginning will bring tears to your eyes. Anyone who is a Phille Phan, or an Ashburn "historian" needs to have this book in their collection! I love it!

4-0 out of 5 stars A Beloved Member of the Philadelphia Phillies' Family
Here's a trivia quiz for you:Which major league baseball player had the most hits during the decade of the 1950s?Mays, Mantle, or Aaron? The answer is Richie Ashburn. This book is not a formal biography of his life, but rather a tribute to the man who was so much of the Philadelphia Phillies' franchise. The book is divided into five sections:his passing, the ballplayer, the broadcaster, the hall of famer, and the family man.Several photographs complement the book, and emphasis is placed on Richie in each of these roles.A fan of the Phillies would especially appreciate this book having become familiar with him as part of the Phillies' announcing team. For those of us who remember Richie's playing career while following the fortunes of another team (the Tigers for me) this book will give us a greater appreciation of his life.

4-0 out of 5 stars Richie Ashburn History
Very first class informative history of Richie Ashburn. Was a fan growing up and found this book very helpful to answer questions and complete information that I often wondered about.

4-0 out of 5 stars Richie Ashburn Remembered
I grew up as a fan of Richie on the field and through his announcing games for the Phillies I was able to keep following him over the years until the day he died. This is a wonderful book and a fine tribute to him as a player and a man. To me he was one of a kind and this book does him justice. I thought I'd seen every photo of him but there were several surprises in the book. I enthusiastically recommend it to anyone who's interested in Richie-lots of great memories. ... Read more
