5-0 out of 5 stars WOW
Steve Cameron's latest work with George Brett is a must for any fan of the greatest game. For everyone who has thrilled to George's accomplishments and admired his blue-collar, headfirst approach to the game he loves, "From Here to Cooperstown" is a joy indeed. This book captures the entire story of Brett's career where he had a lifetime average of .305, 3154 hits, and 1595 runs batted in.Great photos and layout compliment the authoring by Steve Cameron. It includes a great section that has quotes and comments from players, coaches, and writers, that have watched George Brett move from a shaky Single A player to the Hall of Famer that he is. Another feature in this book is that George Brett shares his thoughts, emotions, memories, his recollections, and his feelings about the long journey. It captures the entire story of Brett's career from childhood through his many years with the Kansas City Royals. It also does an outstanding job of building an understanding of why Brett is sopassionate about the game of baseball. Here is a quote from George on how he would like to be remembered. "I'd like to be remembered as the guy who always played hard and ran out every ball." Although George has made it to the Hall of Fame he thanks many for his success.George would later add in his Hall of Fame speech a thought about his parents. George said," To my parents, Jack and Ethel. Thanks for the endless hours of support and love. You taught me the qualities of life that I will pass along to your grandchildren, Jackson, Dylan, and Robin. I would recommend this book to all players in high school, College, and the Minors because of the lessons it teaches about respect for the game and a personal commitment to excellence.

Book Description
George Brett: A Royal Hero is the most complete volume ever compiled about the 1999 Baseball Hall of Fame inductee. His legendary career is reviewed in precise detail through articles that appeared in The Kansas City Star from the early 1970s through 1999. No one followed George Brett with greater interest nor wrote of his exploits with greater insight than the sportswriters of the Royals' hometown daily newspaper. Brett's career, 21 years with the Kansas City Royals, included 12 All-Star appearances and one batting title in each of the three decades in which he played. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A shame the book is out of print.
Now that George Brett has finally been elected to the Hall of Fame (with the 4th highest vote total in history no less), interest in reading about this baseball immortal is at a high and it's very unfortunate thatGarrity's book is no longer in print. The book was written after Brett'swonderful 1980 season, when he captured the hearts of America with hisquest to become the first player to hit .400 since Ted Williams did it in1941.The book's a great look into the life of a player on the brink ofsuperstardom. It'd be great now to get a book on Brett's entire career, because many of his highlights occurred after the '80 season. If you're aBrett fan, I strongly urge you to find this book!

Editorial Review

Book Description
Long-time radio announcers Denny Matthews and Fred White of the Kansas City Royals were baseball's version of The Odd Couple, with their differences often shining through their broadcasts. The phrase "long-time" may not be fair, or accurate, to describe the tenure for these voices. The 1998 season marked the 25th year Matthews and White were on the air together, making them, at that time, the longest-running broadcast crew in the American League. In the National League, they were surpassed only by Jack Buck and Mike Shannon (and only by two years) of the St. Louis Cardinals. (Marty Brennaman and Joe Nuxhall of the Cincinnati Reds also celebrated their 25th anniversary together in 1998.)

If a calculator was put to task, it could be said that Matthews and White did approximately 4,050 games together; or, based on an average three hour game in the American League (although lately they've been more like three-and-a-half hours), the two logged-in about 12,150 hours of play-by-play together. Can you imagine working with same person, day-in and day-out in a small office for 25 years? Not many of us can.The 1998 season also marked their final season together, as White's handshake contract was not renewed after the season. The news of White's dismissal sent shock waves to Royals' fans, and nearly incited a listener riot.

To many, the news came as a shock because in a business that tends to breed egos the size of the Truman Sports Complex, White and Matthews have everything but egos.Baseball radio announcers are a special brand of broadcasters. In this day and age of cable television, it takes a unique person to become a good radio broadcaster, let alone become a great one. To many Royals' fans, Denny and Fred (as they were known to their listeners) are great. For a quarter-century, Denny Matthews and Fred White formed a special bond with their listeners, partly dictated by tenure together and the length of an average American League game, but also by the pair's laid-back, smooth approach to each broadcast. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Linking Baseball's Best
As we share Shiner's nostalgia, we rediscover Aaron, Mays, McCovey, Mantle, and Gibson, old heros, old memories. Baseballs Greatest Players, The Saga Continues is more than a Who's Who of baseball, it's a way of life, a catalog of events, a collection of memories. As Shiner reveals the greatest players, we, who are old enough to remember, bask in their glory and relive our own unachieved ambitions.

But Shiner does more than take us back, he bundles the past with the present and into the future, tyingthe memories together forever in our minds. McGuire's record-setting season rekindles other home run hitters: Roger Maris, Reggie Jackson, Mickey Mantle, even Babe Ruth. We connect to the present, even anticipate the future. McGuire's 70 home run season triggers a vision of people diving into San Francisco Bay to retrieve the balls Barry Bonds his in 2001, the year he surpassed McGuire's record.

Baseball fans will love this book, others will like it. It's clearly, simply, and accurately presented and guaranteed to stir a memory or two.

4-0 out of 5 stars One For The Books
With the writing of Baseball's Greatest Players, author David Shiner takes a serious risk. The only thing a sports fan loves more than making a "greatest list" is arguing voluably about why the other guy's list is WRONG!One read of this book will shut down most any other greatest list's chances, and it does so with style, wit, and a healthy dose of readable fact.

In its text, Shiner's book fulfils both the needs of casual fan's interest and the SABR-members desire for solid, quantifiable statistical evidence. But it goes beyond just fact and storytelling to get to the intangibles that separate the players truly great between the white lines from those whose personality and dedication supported not just their teams, but the game itself.

Baseball, more than any other sport (though Canadian hockey fans will rightly take exception to this) carries its past with it.This continuity, this love of the game that both transcends and unites generations is served well by Shiner's writing.Buy Baseball's Greatest Players, and take it to a sports bar near you.You won't go wrong.

5-0 out of 5 stars 50 Years of Baseball's Best Players--Fun and Interesting!
It's hard not to enjoy this well written, easily readable book on baseball's best players of the past 50 years.Lively anecdotes plus comprehensive (but not boring) analysis shows exactly why these are the best players of the game.I got a kick out of remembering a lot of things I had almost forgotten, like just how good Bob Gibson was. Some of the facts are amazing, like that in the last two years Sandy Koufax pitched, there were 8 games where the Dodgers only scored one run for him--but he won 4 of them. This book also avoids wallowing in sex and drug garbage. It's a baseball book, not National Enquirer.Balanced, interesting, a really solid piece of work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun & Interesting Book on Baseball
Brief synopses of baseball's best players during the past 50 years.Fun and informative.Enjoyed reading this, think others would also.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK ON BASEBALL'S GREAT PLAYERS!
What an enjoyable book!I loved it.Great short biographies of the greatest baseball players from the past 50 years. For the serious baseball fan or the novice (or anyone who wants to know the story behind legendary players like Mantle and Mays, or why Ricky Henderson really IS one of the greatest players ever).Whether you are ten or eighty, this book is fun, interesting, and helps explain why millions love baseball--and their heroes!Makes a great gift for kids or adults.Exciting stories, well written. ...
