Brett's 3,154 career hits are the most by any third baseman in major league history, and 15th all-time. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
This is a book that my husband just had to have! It is out of print and it took awhile for me to find it.If you are a George Brett fan, it is a must have!!

5-0 out of 5 stars WOW
Steve Cameron's latest work with George Brett is a must for any fan of the greatest game. For everyone who has thrilled to George's accomplishments and admired his blue-collar, headfirst approach to the game he loves, "From Here to Cooperstown" is a joy indeed. This book captures the entire story of Brett's career where he had a lifetime average of .305, 3154 hits, and 1595 runs batted in.Great photos and layout compliment the authoring by Steve Cameron. It includes a great section that has quotes and comments from players, coaches, and writers, that have watched George Brett move from a shaky Single A player to the Hall of Famer that he is. Another feature in this book is that George Brett shares his thoughts, emotions, memories, his recollections, and his feelings about the long journey. It captures the entire story of Brett's career from childhood through his many years with the Kansas City Royals. It also does an outstanding job of building an understanding of why Brett is sopassionate about the game of baseball. Here is a quote from George on how he would like to be remembered. "I'd like to be remembered as the guy who always played hard and ran out every ball." Although George has made it to the Hall of Fame he thanks many for his success.George would later add in his Hall of Fame speech a thought about his parents. George said," To my parents, Jack and Ethel. Thanks for the endless hours of support and love. You taught me the qualities of life that I will pass along to your grandchildren, Jackson, Dylan, and Robin. I would recommend this book to all players in high school, College, and the Minors because of the lessons it teaches about respect for the game and a personal commitment to excellence.

Product Description
In more than 21 years of Major League service, all of them spent with the Royals, Brett was a 12-time All-Star and three-time batting champion. He compiled a lifetime batting average of .305 while clubbing 317 home runs, and became a member of baseball's exclusive 3,000-hit club in 1992. His final batting championship came in 1990, making him the only player in the history of the game to win batting titles in three different decades. Most importantly, Brett helped lead the Royals to their only World Series championship, a 1985 comeback triumph over the St. Louis Cardinals in seven games. "A Royal Hero" takes readers back to all of the great moments and more, in a book that will prove to be a great resource for all Royals and George Brett fans. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A shame the book is out of print.
Now that George Brett has finally been elected to the Hall of Fame (with the 4th highest vote total in history no less), interest in reading about this baseball immortal is at a high and it's very unfortunate thatGarrity's book is no longer in print. The book was written after Brett'swonderful 1980 season, when he captured the hearts of America with hisquest to become the first player to hit .400 since Ted Williams did it in1941.The book's a great look into the life of a player on the brink ofsuperstardom. It'd be great now to get a book on Brett's entire career, because many of his highlights occurred after the '80 season. If you're aBrett fan, I strongly urge you to find this book!

Product Description
Long-time radio announcers Denny Matthews and Fred Whiteof the Kansas City Royals were baseball's version of The Odd Couple, with their differences often shining through their broadcasts. Thephrase "long-time" may not be fair, or accurate, to describe thetenure for these voices. The 1998 season marked the 25th year Matthewsand White were on the air together, making them, at that time, thelongest-running broadcast crew in the American League. In the NationalLeague, they were surpassed only by Jack Buck and Mike Shannon (andonly by two years) of the St. Louis Cardinals. (Marty Brennaman andJoe Nuxhall of the Cincinnati Reds also celebrated their 25thanniversary together in 1998.)

If a calculator was put to task, it could be said that Matthews andWhite did approximately 4,050 games together; or, based on an averagethree hour game in the American League (although lately they've beenmore like three-and-a-half hours), the two logged-in about 12,150hours of play-by-play together. Can you imagine working with sameperson, day-in and day-out in a small office for 25 years? Not many ofus can.The 1998 season also marked their final season together, asWhite's handshake contract was not renewed after the season. The newsof White's dismissal sent shock waves to Royals' fans, and nearlyincited a listener riot.

To many, the news came as a shock because in a business that tends tobreed egos the size of the Truman Sports Complex, White and Matthewshave everything but egos.Baseball radio announcers are a specialbrand of broadcasters. In this day and age of cable television, ittakes a unique person to become a good radio broadcaster, let alonebecome a great one. To many Royals' fans, Denny and Fred (as they wereknown to their listeners) are great. For a quarter-century, DennyMatthews and Fred White formed a special bond with their listeners, partly dictated by tenure together and the length of an averageAmerican League game, but also by the pair's laid-back, smoothapproach to each broadcast. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars A Transcribed Time Capsule
This book reads like one long rain delay, with Royals radio legends Denny and Fred telling anecdotes to kill time. Their remarks are committed to paper, but there's little structure or much evidence of any unifying vision for this book.

I could listen to Denny all day, and this transcription captures his vocal style of lengthy explanations and punchy summaries. For example, about his easygoing relationship with Muriel Kauffman, Denny says, "I could say things to her and people would ask me, 'How do you say that to her?' People misjudged her. She was a very outgoing, gregarious, fun-loving person." I could pick any of a dozen examples like that. It's nice to hear Denny's voice, even in print.

Anyone hoping for gossip or criticism will be deeply disappointed. These are rain delay anecdotes. Fred says that Denny is a "confirmed bachelor", and Denny talks about how Lou Piniella would get angry after making a mistake on the field. Both announcers talk about their rural childhoods and how they worked their way into the Royals job. Denny likes to play hockey; Fred prefers family life. Even the dismissals of Fred and previous announcer Buddy Blattner are mentioned but vaguely glossed over. That's the kind of genial discussion that's in this book.

Except that I shouldn't call it discussion. The two authors alternate long stretches of text; it's as though they were never in the same room for the creation of this book. It reads as if Fulks just copied down separate sessions of audio tape and tried to arrange pieces of them into themes. Add 16 pages of photos, and it's done.

So there you have it. This is not so much a book as a loosely organized collection of transcribed interviews. Nothing controversial, nothing very critical. It's as if you could preserve a drizzly day like a jar of grape jam. Reading this book will bring back a lot of memories for Royals fans, and maybe that's all you want.

5-0 out of 5 stars Aaaaah, baseball on the radio
do you remember sitting on the stoop after you got finished mowing the lawn and listening to the last few innings of a baseball game with 2 great announcers calling the game?this is a great book about two of the best.it will bring back great memories of Royals baseball and is interesting toanyone who is a fan. ...
