4-0 out of 5 stars Roberto Clemente by Thomas W. Gilbert
This biography by Thomas W. Gilbert on Roberto Clemente was very informational but at times lackluster and unexciting. In the book, the author described Roberto Clemente as one of the greatest baseball players and a person who valued life.He died in a plane crash on New Year's Eve in 1972.He was going to Nicaragua to help earthquake victims, but the DC-7 cargo plane developed engine failure and the plane turned back for San Juan.He was inducted into the Hall of Fame, the only player to be immediately inducted. He finished with 3,000 hits, 12 gold gloves, 4 batting titles, and other great accomplishments.I think young readers and baseball fans would enjoy this book because it is informative about his life and his career. This book is unique from others because it went in depth more than other books I read. The language of the book was very understanding and it used many thrilling adjectives to describe games and it used some similes but not a lot. The author also included great realistic details, and various quotes from players. This is a great book for baseball fans of all ages. ... Read more

Product Description
On New Year's Eve 1972, following eighteen magnificent seasons in the major leagues, Roberto Clemente died a hero's death, killed in a plane crash as he attempted to deliver food and medical supplies to Nicaragua after a devastating earthquake. David Maraniss now brings the great baseball player brilliantly back to life in Clemente: The Passion and Grace of Baseball's Last Hero, a book destined to become a modern classic. Much like his acclaimed biography of Vince Lombardi, When Pride Still Mattered, Maraniss uses his narrative sweep and meticulous detail to capture the myth and a real man.

Anyone who saw Clemente, as he played with a beautiful fury, will never forget him. He was a work of art in a game too often defined by statistics. During his career with the Pittsburgh Pirates, he won four batting titles and led his team to championships in 1960 and 1971, getting a hit in all fourteen World Series games in which he played. His career ended with three-thousand hits, the magical three-thousandth coming in his final at-bat, and he and the immortal Lou Gehrig are the only players to have the five-year waiting period waived so they could be enshrined in the Hall of Fame immediately after their deaths.

There is delightful baseball here, including thrilling accounts of the two World Series victories of Clemente's underdog Pittsburgh Pirates, but this is far more than just another baseball book. Roberto Clemente was that rare athlete who rose above sports to become a symbol of larger themes. Born near the canebrakes of rural Carolina, Puerto Rico, on August 18, 1934, at a time when there were no blacks or Puerto Ricans playing organized ball in the United States, Clemente went on to become the greatest Latino player in the major leagues. He was, in a sense, the Jackie Robinson of the Spanish-speaking world, a ballplayer of determination, grace, and dignity who paved the way and set the highest standard for waves of Latino players who followed in later generations and who now dominate the game.

The Clemente that Maraniss evokes was an idiosyncratic character who, unlike so many modern athletes, insisted that his responsibilities extended beyond the playing field. In his final years, his motto was that if you have a chance to help others and fail to do so, you are wasting your time on this earth. Here, in the final chapters, after capturing Clemente's life and times, Maraniss retraces his final days, from the earthquake to the accident, using newly uncovered documents to reveal the corruption and negligence that led the unwitting hero on a mission of mercy toward his untimely death as an uninspected, overloaded plane plunged into the sea. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Arriba!
Good book on a baseball legend. I saw him play when I was young. He is portrayed as I remember him. But the book tends to wonder to other people a little too often for me. If you were a Clemente fan or want to know more about the man, this is a good read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for Baseball/Clemente fans
I gave this to my hubby for fathers day. He is an avid Clemente fan. He's not much of a reader, but this was one he could not put down!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excelente biografia
Excelente libro. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars The slant is too much pro-Clemente
Although he was dogged by injuries and charges of hypochondria throughout his baseball career, Roberto Clemente was a great player. He had one of the most powerful throwing arms in baseball and a great hitter. Some have called him the best right fielder in the history of the game. In this book, Hano describes Clemente well, but at times the prose descends to the level of juvenile and is staunchly pro-Clemente. That support is there even when Clemente violates the signals of the third-base coach.
On page 52 there is a description of Clemente running through the stop sign put up by the third base coach and managing to score. Clemente admits that he saw the sign and ignored it. The coach explained that there were no outs and the team's best hitters were coming up. Therefore, the coach did the right thing and Hano totally supports Clemente. It is one thing to support a player when the manager was wrong, but absurd to treat what could have been a major blunder in such a cavalier manner.
This book was written before the great change in sports writing, when the writers dropped their self-imposed censorship of negative comments and began engaging in honest and critical evaluations of the players. A little of that change expressed in this book would have made it better.

Product Description
A graphic novel biography of Puerto Rico's greatest baseball star. 21 is an all-ages graphic biography of baseball star Roberto Clemente: No other baseball player dominated the 1960s like him and no other Latin American player achieved his numbers. 21 chronicles his early days growing up in rural Puerto Rico, the highlights of his career (including the 1960s World Series), the prejudice he faced, his private life and his humanitarian mission. Santiago captures the grit of Clemente's rise from his impoverished childhood, to the majesty of his performance on the field, to his fundamental decency as a human being, in a drawing style that combines realistic attention to detail and expressive cartooning. ...
