4-0 out of 5 stars Good stories from a great man
These stories are good and entertaining, especially if you are a Latter-Day Saint.I thoroughly enjoyed them and thank Murph for publishing them.It is too bad that there are not more men playing baseball, the greatest sport invented, like Dale Murphy.

5-0 out of 5 stars A book that encompasses all things Dale Murphy.
It's hard to believe that it has been 11 years since Murphy retired, and 18 years since this book was written, but this book still remains a great read for all Dale Murphy fans (and lifetime Atlanta Braves fans). Written just before the 1986 season, Murphy looks back at the many aspects, achievements, and milestones of his life: growing up in the Pacific northwest, his childhood baseball days, his rise through the minors, his back-to-back MVP seasons in 1982 and 1983, and even a look at Murph's personal side from his family life to his life in the Mormon church.

Ironically, Dale's best season came after he wrote this book. In 1987 he his 44 home runs with 105 RBI...and didn't win the MVP (that went to Andre Dawson of the Cubs who hit 49). Nevertheless, this book is a print version of the Dale Murphy persona that attracted one of the largest fan followings of that era of sports and one that remains to this day. I should know...I'm a lifelong fan. I even have a wonderful personal story about an encounter with him at a game in Cincinnati in 1989. There is no excuse for him NOT being in the Hall of Fame (but Kirby Puckett and Gary Carter are...go figure).

Get the book. You won't be disappointed. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Dale Murphy is a perfect role model
This book I read many years ago. What Dale has done with this book is he had asked kids and adults that have questions about the game of baseball to step forward and ask away.He answers all of the question with answers that actually make since to the kids who asked. If a 10 year old asks how can I improve my swing, he does not go into the concept of speed of the bat, angle of the bat, etc. etc.He talks about practice makes perfect, look at yourself in a mirrior and correct what doesn't look right.Mr. Murphy was my hero as a kid, and when I read this book it convienced me even more, that Dale cares about what people see him as.The book was easy to read, and I recommend it for any kid that is interested in the game of baseball. ... Excerpt: Dale Bryan Murphy (born March 12, 1956, in Portland, Oregon) is a former outfielder and first baseman in Major League Baseball, most notable for his years with the Atlanta Braves. During his career, Murphy won consecutive National League Most Valuable Player Awards (1982-1983), the National League's Silver Slugger Award four straight years (1982-1985), and the National League's Gold Glove award five straight years (1982-1986). Murphy is regarded by many as one of the premier players during the 1980s. His best years were with the Atlanta Braves, appearing in the All-Star Game seven times, and leading the National League in home runs and RBI twice; he also led the major leagues in home runs and runs batted in over the 10-year span from 1981 to 1990. He led the National League in games, at bats, runs, hits, extra base hits, RBIs, runs created, total bases, and plate appearances in the 1980s. He also accomplished a 30-30 (30 home runs with 30 stolen bases) season in 1983, at the time only the 6th player since 1922 to do so. His 1983 MVP year is the only time in major-league history a player has compiled a .300 batting average, 30 home runs, 120 runs batted in, 130 runs scored, 90 bases on balls, and 30 stolen bases - with fewer than 10 times caught stealing. Murphy is only one of two players who hit at least 300 home runs in the 1980s. The other is Mike Schmidt. Murphy won five consecutive Gold Glove Awards, and won two consecutive MVP awards in 1982 and 1983, making him one of only four outfielders in major league history with consecutive MVP years, and the youngest ever to do so at the time. Between 1981 and 1986, Murphy played in 740 consecutive gam...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=269991 ... Read more
