Product Description
On July 12, 1996, baseball lost a little more of its soul.

On that day, Kirby Puckett of the Minnesota Twins, one of baseball's most talented and likable players, was forced to retire because of failing vision brought on by glaucoma.

At age 35, Puckett was done with the game that had given him so much and in turn, which he had done so much for.

Then again, maybe that was the way it had to end for him-the warrior taken off the field on his shield. There was no fading away for Puckett, no pathetic attempts at a comeback.Puckett saw reality, knew his days as a ballpayer were done and he accepted it with the grace that always marked his days in the game.

In this book, the first since his retirement, we look at the life and times of one of baseball's greatest ambassadors. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars SUCH A TRADGEDY
THIS IS A GOOD BUT BRIEF STORY OF A VERY GOOD CAREER FOR FORMER MINNESOTA TWIN KIRBY PUCKETT. THE BOOK IS FILLED WITH MANY PHOTOS AND THE PAGES ARE QUITE EASY TO READ. THE ONE COMPLAINT I HAVE IS THAT THE BOOK IS SPARSE AND NEEDS MORE CONTENT TO MAKE IT A VERY GOOD BOOK. KIRBY WAS A VERY GOOD PLAYER AND A FAVORITE WITH THE FANS AND TEAMATES. HE HELPED THE TWINS WIN TWO WORLD SERIES WITH HIS GREAT OVERALL PLAY. HE CAREER CAME TO A HALT BECAUSE OF GLACOMA WHICH WAS A HEREDITARY PROBLEM THAT PLAGUED HIS FATHER. WITH HIS CAREER OVER KIRBY WORKED FOR THE TWINS IN THEIR FRONT OFFICE. I ALWAYS ENJOYED WATCHING KIRBY PLAY. AFTER READING THIS BOOK I ALSO APPRECIATE WHAT A GOOD PERSON HE WAS. I DO RECOMMEND THIS FOR ALL BASEBALL AND ESPECIALLY TWINS FANS.

3-0 out of 5 stars Kirby, best Twin ever
The book is a very basic story of Kirby Puckett that leads much to be desired by the more mature fan.The book while a good read, seems to be written more for kids. As the other reviewer mentioned, a good read but fora better biography we will have to wait for Puckett to come out with hisown later in life.

The story of the man before his image was permanently tarnished.Brings you back to his simpler days when people smiled when you mentioned his name.

2-0 out of 5 stars Puck is a glimpse into the real story yet to be to told.
If baseball star Kirby Puckett were a biblical figure, he would be a cross between David, of David and Goliath and Samson, of Samson and Delilah.Unfortunaely Puck: Baseball's Last Warior doesn't approach the telling of the whole story. It is too much of an abreviation of his life and efforts. It may be that the public will have to wait for Kirby Puckett to publish his own more autobiogrphical life story for us to know what makes the man so generous, likable and thus so tragic to have had to leave baseball playing in his prime. Until such a book is published Puck will have to do for those interested in an abreviated look into the life of Kirby Puckett. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiration for creative baseball practices
As a All Star Little League Coach of 7 and 8 year olds, and a MOM, this has sparked my imagination for coming up with creative drills. I've used some of Kirby's and some of my own, to pass on the love of the game of playing baseball at whatever level. Gosh, I love the look in the kids eyes, when they finally get it. Thanks Kirby ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Memories live forever
Baseball books like this one were hard to come across in Australia during the early 1990s. This book has sentimental value to me, as my mum purchased it for me during a holiday to Dallas Texas in 1994. Also, seeing Puckett's heroics in the 1987, 1991 World Series, and 1993 All-Star Game gives this book extra significance for me personally.

What I enjoyed about this book are the details we would only learn of Mr Puckett by knowing him personally. In particular I admire the fact that he worked in motor vehicle manufacturing, and like all of us he did more than his fair share of a full days work in a normal job. This allows us to appreciate that unlike all those players who are treated like royalty from high school to MLB, Mr Puckett had to work hard each step of the way.

On debut he went 4 for 5 with the bat, which was a most impressive debut, and his career had many fantastic moments thereafter.

It was sad to see him exit baseball prematurely due to illness, and his passing at 45-years old was far too soon, but this book is a wonderful legacy for fans of Mr Puckett's to enjoy. Nicholas R.W. Henning - Australian Baseball Author

4-0 out of 5 stars Kirby Pucket: I Love This Game
I Love This Game Kirby Pucket

Kirby Pucket's hard work and persistence has allowed him to be a superstar in major league baseball.Kirby Pucket started playing baseball as a little boy in Chicago. There heplayed third base, not outfield. In Chicago he played in his neighborhood. His family didn't have much money so he would just throw and catch a ballagainst his apartment building as much as possible. But when there wereenough kids to play a game he would play against them.Sometimes he playedwith his older brothers and their friends. He held his own playing withthem.Kirby soon became good enough to play varsity baseball at his localschool. After that, he went through a long and hard trip to the majors. This trip included practices on hot summer days and having to settle forsports facilities that didn't even have bathrooms! It was along that routethat he met people that impacted his career a great deal.Among thosepeople there was Kent Hrbek and Bob Symonds, the man that taught him all ofthe fundamentals of the game.It was people like them that made his careerinteresting and exciting.Overall, I think that this book was interestingand it is something that a person with a dream can relate to.The book waswriten well and that made it easy to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars it was a inspiring book
this was a great book i would recomened it to any on

4-0 out of 5 stars A true sports hero with a good message
I'm a Minnesota girl (well, I think of myself as a girl) and as a Minnesota resident comes our history with our professional sports teams. The Minnesota Twins and Kirby Puckett are a part of our history. And Minnesota residents loved Kirby Puckett.

Kirby Puckett: Be the Best You Can Be is Kirby's story from childhood to his illustrious career as a centerfielder for the Minnesota Twins. But it's more than his life story. It's about believing in yourself, never giving up, accepting who you are and working hard for what you want. What a powerful message!

Also included are the highlights of Kirby's baseball career and messages of hope for kids. He talks about helping others, believing in yourself, mistakes, education, fun, saying no to drugs, etc.

Kirby recently died. What I carry with me when I think about Kirby is his loyalty to the Twins, and all of Minnesota. He could have played for other clubs that would have paid him much more than he made in Minnesota, but he didn't. That's integrity.

The message in Kirby's story is as fresh and valuable as it was when the book was first published in 1993.

Armchair Interviews says: Kirby Puckett: Be the Best You Can Be, is a tribute to a special Minnesota sports hero ... Read more
