5-0 out of 5 stars Brooks Robinson
First let me tell you about myself, like Brooks Robinson I am a third baseman. This book has inspired me to try my best. On page 35 in the book it says, "He was once again sent down to the minors-this time to Vancouver."He spent about four years in the minor leagues, but he kept trying and later became the greatest defensive third baseman who ever played the game. This book also inspired to work on my defense. Brooks Robinson was never that great of a hitter but he made his mark by his defensive plays on the field.

Product Description
Trivia buffs and casual fans alike will marvel at the nuggets found in Baseball Gold, the first book of its kind to uncover some of the quirkiest factoids about our national pastime. Who, for instance, would have guessed that the only other player besides Hank Aaron to homer for the Braves more than 15 seasons in a row was Warren Spahn? Or that Hideo Nomo once gave up a home run after leaving a game? Baseball Gold will make a believer out of you and in the process take you on a magical tour of the game's unusual history. As Joaquin Andujar once said when asked for a one-word description of baseball, "Youneverknow." Now you do. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Tedious book full of errors
This book promises more than it delivers. The text abounds with errors (sometimes two on one page!).And the reminiscences by Brooks Robinson are bathetic rather than entertaining.

5-0 out of 5 stars Baseball gold is gold.
Maybe it is because this book is brand new but I cannot fathom why no one has reviewed this yet. This book is a great read for hardcore stat heads to the casual fan alike. It is basically 400 pages of little stories and stats. However, the way it is layed out is what makes the book special.Since I am NOT a know-it-all about baseball, I tend to stay away from trivia or Q&A style books. This book just gives a quick answer or anecdote. For example, most books would ask "What American League player has represented five different teams in an all-star game?", then for the answer you would have to helplessly flip through a hundred pages. In Baseball Gold it just tells you that Gary Sheffield made the all-star team with five different teams. To me, that just makes more sense.Almost ever single page has at least one picture.Overall, a great buy.

Product Description

The history of the Baltimore Orioles is filled with amazing achievements, inspiring efforts, hilarious antics, and some bitter disappointments. The Orioles Encyclopedia traces the history, triumphs, and follies of the team from 1954 to the present.

Think you know everything about the Orioles? Test your knowledge with this exhaustive guide. The Encyclopedia includes nearly 400 player profiles from Bobo to Zupo, the results of every game since 1954, and short features on managers and coaches. Browse through the seasons chronologically or by the players alphabetically. This comprehensive information is brought to life with more than 350 rarely seen photographs -- including 26 color plates -- from the Baseball Hall of Fame and the old Baltimore News-American, along with classic photos from the pages of Sport magazine and Sports Illustrated.

The Orioles Encyclopedia recounts the colorful history of this storied and beleaguered program. Perhaps some of the tales and memories found in these pages will inspire a conversation between a father and son, grandfather and granddaughter, boyfriend and girlfriend, old fan and new. With a foreword by Hall of Famer Brooks Robinson, The Orioles Encyclopedia is the ultimate companion for any baseball fan who wears orange and black.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Resource
Mike Gesker's wonderful Orioles Encyclopedia should come with a a warning label for those who are now or ever were fans of the Baltimore Orioles: You Will Lose Many Hours Out of Your Otherwise Productive Life If You Buy This Book. Open it looking for some fact about some Oriole you remember and the next thing you know several hours will have passed as random thoughts send you scurrying from one entry to another. At each you will be delighted by combination of solid research and entertaining writing. This is not a dull, just-the-facts encyclopedia; it is amusing and insightful, written by someone who is clearly a fan of baseball but not so mesmerized by the game that he cannot poke fun at its foibles. Besides, any book that immortalized the name Drungo Hazewood belongs on the shelf of every Orioles fan.

5-0 out of 5 stars ROY FIRESTONE LOVES THE ORIOLES ENCYCLOPEDIA
"The Orioles Encyclopedia is the most comprehensive and thorough book about the Orioles ever written. As a 50 year fan of the Orioles, and a batboy of the World Championship team(during two springs in Miami), I knew and remain friends with dozens of Oriole legends. This book features the most insightful and candid observations and anecdotes of the great (and not so great)players ever to don the orange and black.I have an extensive collection of rare Oriole atrifacts, some that trace back to the beginning of the 20th century, and this book is by far the best reference source I have ever seen or read. Mike Gesker made a near superhuman effort in collecting and researching the data as well as the amazingly thorough job in gathering some rare, behind the scene photographs of the Orioles over the last several decades. I heartily endorse this book as a must have for any Oriole fan, and really, for any baseball historian."

5-0 out of 5 stars Memories
I found Mike Gesker's "The Orioles Encyclopedia" to be a well-researched and well-written book, one that evokes memories of being an Orioles fan for more than 40 years (beginning when I moved to Baltimore) -- through the thick of the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s and a couple of years in the 1990s through the thin of today. The author sent me back many more years to the time at age 12 in Arkansas when I first discovered the wonder that was baseball. Some of my early years in Arkansas wound up being connected to the Oriole years detailed in "Orioles Encyclopedia." It has been great fun making such discoveries. I recommend this book to Orioles fans in particular and all fans of baseball. Enjoy those memories.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Orioles Book ever
This book is the finest and most complete book ever written about the Orioles.Every Orioles fan should own AT LEAST one copy of this book. The pictures in this book alone are worth the price of the book.i cannot stress how wonderful this book is.Any baseball fan would treasure this read.

2-0 out of 5 stars Just like the team...it fails in the small stuff.
Yes this book in very detailed. So detailed in fact that according to the all time roster, Tejada is still on the team among others who havent wore the orange and black in years. ( as denoted by the year they joined followed by just a - )Now that must have been some trade that the team had both Tejada and Luke Scott on the team at the same time. Also, this book is filled with typos.Under Roberto Alomar's section it mentions that the team made the playoffs in '95....Reagan and Doug Jones could only be so lucky!!!!While I appriciate the pics of Larry Doby and other legends who have been apart of the team history, this book is heavily flawed with mistakes that an elementary student could find while proofreading. ...
