5-0 out of 5 stars The World According to the Wizard
When Whitey Herzog swung the deal to obtain a slick fielding-no hit shortstop from the San Diego Padres, by the name of Osborne Earl Smith; he had completed the final piece to what would become a World Championship team - The 1982 St Louis Cardinals.

The Cardinals were a team without a power hitter; they used speed and defense to win games, and nobody epitomized that quality better than Ozzie Smith - The Wizard. His autobiography, assisted by Rob Rains, is an interesting perspective from the game's all-time defensive shortstop; not to mention, one of baseball's best-dressed performers and acrobats.Ozzie could do it all; later in his career, he learned how to slap the ball to all fields, and became a pretty decent hitter; not much power, but good in the clutch, and good at putting the ball in play to take advantage of his terrific speed.

Smith was a joy to watch; especially when he connected for his first home run as a left-handed batter - in the clutch - lifting the Cardinals to a dramatic postseason victory in 1985, over the stunned Los Angeles Dodgers. As the late Jack Buck exclaimed, "Go crazy folks!" ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Condescending and needlessly negative
Great pictures, great break down of the different Cardinal eras. However, I grew increasingly disgusted with the condescending and patronizing tone of the author and the needless pot shots in a book for young Cardinal fans.Did Vince Coleman have a troubled time as a New York Met? Yes, but I don't want to read more about the "fire-cracker" incident and less about his base stealing in a picture book about the Cardinals (p. 117). I felt this was not the place to go into his unfortunate post-St. Louis choices. Save it for a Mets book.

I really took issue with the vicious nature that was used to attack Mark McGwire on pg. 128.His controversy should be mentioned no doubt but it seems like the author had an axe to grind.McGwire, a "lanky" rookie who in 1998 was suddenly a "towering behemoth"? Since when has 6'5" 215-220 for a professional athlete in his early 20s been "lanky"? He's always been a large guy.Don't change facts to support the claims of attention seeking coke head Jose Canseco and the congressional witch hunt. I also thought it was obscene to ask if the "S" on his chest stood for "superman or the other S-word." The "other S-word"? What - 'steriods' or some other 'S' word? This was a completely inappropiate bashing of McGwire especially in a Cardinals book for the young fan. Steriods in MLB is an issue way too complicated to go into for half a page of text where it's made into a ridicuous "black and white" issue. (I used a lot of white-out for this section.)

Jim Edmonds turns easy plays into a photo-ops to "vogue for the camera"?(p. 129) Really?I thought he played shallow to take hits away from the opposition. And the "Redbirds Outlast the Red Sox" in 1967?(p. 82) Really? Is that what Bob Gibson did to Boston in the World Series - "outlast" them? A lot of this book just seems very condescending and needlessly passive agressive for a book supposedly celebrating the Cardinals. It also doesn't help that this book seems targeted for young Redbird rooters. There are about 30 better Cardinal books than this. It could have been really good b/c I really do like the layout and photos of memorabilia, unfortunately it was marred by poor editorial decisions.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must For Every Cardinals Fan
Every Cardinals fan will want to read this historical perspective of their favorite team.Filled with great photographs, it brought each era into focus and helped to explain the reasons for the strong support that this team has always enjoyed. ... Read more
