4-0 out of 5 stars A series of short synopsis' of the Cy Young award winners up through 1995
The Cy Young award is given to the pitcher(s) deemed to have been the most dominant in the past season. It is based on a vote take by the Baseball Writers' Association of America (BBWAA) and the Cy Young was first awarded in 1956. From that time through 1966, only one Cy Young was awarded in the major leagues, but from 1967 until the present, a Cy Young award was given to a pitcher in both major leagues. This book contains a synopsis of all of the winners, starting with those who have won the award the most times. Quite naturally, more space is devoted to the descriptions of the multiple winners.
The last section of the book is devoted to a list of pitchers who were great, yet never won a Cy Young award. This is of course a natural thing, for some pitchers are always having a career year and for that reason their star will shine the brightest for that season. For other pitchers, they were consistent throughout their careers, never having a truly dominant season in all phases of pitching. For that is truly what the award is all about, the pitcher having a season where they were strong in every phase: Earned Run Average (ERA), strikeouts, win-loss percentage, number of wins, innings pitched, bases on balls and the batting average of their opponents.
These statistics are given for each pitcher in their award winning season(s) and from that data, it is clear why they won the award. For some of these pitchers, the opposing batters his less than .200 against them for the entire season. For example, in the 1963 season, opposing batters hit a paltry .189 against Sandy Koufax. That is the definition of dominance.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent
This a good book that talks about the past Cy Young winners in a interesting way. If you are a baseball fan that likes to read about strikeouts rather than homeruns, then you'll like this book. You'll read about players from Kaufax to Clemens and may think about pitchers in a much different way after you read this. ... Read more

Aus Wikipedia. Nicht dargestellt. Auszug:The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum is an American history museum and hall of fame, located at 25 Main Street in Cooperstown, New York, operated by private interests serving as the central point for the study of the history of baseball in the United States and beyond, the display of baseball-related artifacts and exhibits, and the honoring of persons who have excelled in playing, managing, and serving the sport. The Hall's motto is "Preserving History, Honoring Excellence, Connecting Generations". The word Cooperstown is often used as shorthand (or a metonym) for the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, just as the expression "Hall of Fame" is understood to mean the National Baseball Hall of Fame. The Entrance to the Baseball Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame was dedicated on June 12, 1939. Stephen C. Clark was owner of a local hotel and sought to bring tourists to Cooperstown, which had been suffering economically when the Great Depression significantly reduced the local tourist trade and Prohibition devastated the local hops industry. His granddaughter, Jane Forbes Clark, is the current Chairman of the Board of Directors. The erroneous claim that U.S. Civil War hero Abner Doubleday invented baseball in Cooperstown, a claim made by former National League president Abraham G. Mills and his 1905 Mills Commission, was instrumental in the early marketing of the Hall. An $8 million library and research facility opened in 1994. Excerpt: A perfect game is defined by Major League Baseball as a game in which a pitcher (or combination of pitchers) pitches a victory that lasts a minimum of nine innings and in which no opposing player reaches base. Thus, the pitcher (or pitchers) cannot allow any hits, walks, hit batsmen, or any opposing player to reach base safely for any other reasonin short, "27 up, 27 down". The feat has been achieved only 19 times in the history of major league baseball17 times since the modern era began in 1900. By definition, a perfect game must be both a no-hitter and a shutout. Since the pitcher cannot control whether or not his teammates commit any errors, the pitcher must be backed up by solid fielding to pitch a perfect game. An error that does not allow a baserunner, such as a misplayed foul ball, does not spoil a perfect game. Weather-shortened contests in which a team has no baserunners and games in which a team reaches first base only in extra innings do not qualify as official perfect games under the present definition. The first confirmed use of the term "perfect game" was in 1908; the current official definition of the term was formalized in 1991. Although it is possible for multiple pitchers to combine for a perfect game (as has happened nine times at the major league level for a no-hitter), to date, every major league perfect game has been thrown by a single pitcher. Lee Richmond, pitcher of the first perfect game in major le...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=186058 ... Read more

Product Description
Baseball has long been considered a game of individual skills with much less emphasis on teamwork than other team oriented sports such as football and basketball. However, there are many occasions in baseball when teamwork is necessary, but no teamwork is more important or carries more impact than that of the pitcher and catcher. This team must function as a cohesive unit in order to experience total team success. This book has been developed to provide an insight into pitching and catching for players wanting to master the positions and for coaches who want to become better teachers of the positions. It is particularly designed for those players and coaches who do not have a strong background in the art of pitching and catching but have the desire to understand appropriate pitching and catching skills. The photographs provide excellent images of what is being described in the chapters. Building a Winning Pitcher-Catcher Combination is aimed at providing a complete program to maximize the effective teamwork of two of the games most important positions. ... Read more

Excerpt: MLB Records Denton True "Cy" Young (March 29, 1867 November 4, 1955) was an American baseball player who pitched for five different major league teams from 1890 to 1911. Young was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1937. One year after Young's death, the Cy Young Award was created to honor the previous season's best pitcher. During his 22-year career, Young established numerous professional pitching records in the majors, some of which have stood for a century. Young retired with 511 career wins, 94 wins ahead of Walter Johnson, who is second on the list of most wins in Major League history. In addition to wins, Young currently holds the Major League records for most career innings pitched (7,355), most career games started (815), and most complete games (749). He also retired with 316 losses, the most in MLB history. Young's 76 career shutouts are fourth all-time. He also won at least 30 games in a season five times, with ten other seasons of 20 or more wins. In addition, Young pitched three no-hitters, including the first perfect game of baseball's "modern era". In 1999, 88 years after his final Major League appearance and 44 years after his death, editors at The Sporting News ranked Cy Young 14th on their list of "Baseball's 100 Greatest Players". That same year, baseball fans named him to the Major League Baseball All-Century Team. Young's career started in 1890 with the Cleveland Spiders. After eight years with the Spiders, Young was moved t...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=6849 ... Read more
