Extractions: To return to the current issue's index The National Basketball Association, in suspending Denver Nuggets' basketball player Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf, and the media, in conducting a witch hunt against the athlete, demonstrated both hypocrisy and extreme sensitivity to the intrusion of political and social reality into the world of sports. Citing his Muslim beliefs, Abdul-Rauf refused to stand for the playing of "The Star-Spangled Banner," contravening an NBA regulation. He explained his action by stating that the US flag was a "symbol of oppression, of tyranny. This country has a long history of that. I don't think you can argue the facts." Indeed tens of millions around the world would not. Abdul-Rauf has been unobtrusively refusing to stand for the anthem for some time. It only became an issue when talk show hosts in Denver caught on to the fact and played up the issue. The player was accused of a lack of patriotism, profaning the memory of those who had died in US uniforms and so on. The NBA front office, responding to the jingoistic campaign, promptly suspended him. Abdul-Rauf then agreed to abide by the league rule, saying he would pray during the national anthem instead. The NBA's claim about the sanctity of the anthem is absurd. When its playing threatens to interfere with valuable television time, during a network broadcast, for instance, "The Star-Spangled Banner" is performed 20 minutes ahead of time to a half-empty arena.

Extractions: Dennis Rodman Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf (a.k.a. Chris Jackson) is co-Fool of the Week for obvious reasons. He refused to stand up for the National Anthem because he said that it conflicts with his religious beliefs, and that to him the United States flag "represents Tyranny and Oppression." Uh-uh, Chris is making $2.6 million a year or approx. $30,000 a game. To us here at the Pit, we feel anyone making that kind of money should be damn happy he is living in the greatest country on the planet, and if he wants to join his friends over in the Middle-East where he'd probably be killed in some war, that's just fine with us. Dennis Rodman (a.k.a. the Worm) is co-fool of the Week for obvious reasons also. This clown head-butted a referee after he didn't agree with a call they had made. Rodman who is regarded as a great player in the minds of many Chicago Bulls fans is to us just a bum. He gets paid tons of money to stand under the basket and get rebounds. He scores about 2 points per game. For god's sake, my little sister could score that much. Oh, did we mention his annoying hair Your Reactions: This one was close! 55% of you agreed with our choice of Rodman and Rauf, but a whopping 45% disagreed! Wow, we thought we weree right on with this choice, but many of you thought otherwise. Check out the selected comments below.

Extractions: PLAYING BY THE RULES TRANSCRIPT The recent conflict over basketball player Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf's refusal to stand during the National Anthem has sparked debate over the balance between religious and patriotic duty. Following a report on the controversy by Tom Bearden, Charlayne Hunter-Gault discusses Islam's growing role with an expert and the social impact with essayist Roger Rosenblatt. CHARLAYNE HUNTER-GAULT: A battle of wills between the National Basketball Association and one of its star players ended today. It was a struggle that stirred up strong feelings about religion and patriotism. Tom Bearden begins our report. TOM BEARDEN: Twenty-seven-year-old Mississippi-born Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf, is a five-year NBA veteran. Formerly known as Chris Jackson, he changed his name in 1991 after converting to Islam. Abdul-Rauf is one of the Denver Nuggets' best players, averaging 19.6 points per game. He leads the league in free throw percentage, making 93 percent of his foul shots. Unlike his teammates, Abdul Rauf has not stood during the National Anthem for the entire season. Most of the time he didn't come onto the court until the opening ceremonies were over. But his actions escaped widespread public attention until this week. Reaction was immediate and overwhelmingly negative. UNIDENTIFIED MAN: I think it's ridiculous! I respect his religious beliefs, but he should also respect the fact that he lives in a country greater than any other, and it's a matter of standing out of respect.

Extractions: Abdul-Rauf can't abide his success By Ken Hamblin Last week it came to the attentionof America that Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf, point guard for the Denver Nuggets basketball team and a devout Muslim, refused to standduring the national anthem, which historically signals the startof American sporting events. It was a defiance that led to his suspension from the NationalBasketball Association and cost him more than $30,000 for thegame he missed. Thursday, the NBA reinstated him after he agreedto stand and pray silently during the anthem. Initially Abdul-Rauf had insisted incorrectly, I might add that the Islamic faith prevented him from pledging allegianceto anything except God. Since the onset of this confused lightweight African-American'shissy fit everyone from talk radio hosts to sports writersto the proverbial "man on the street" has joinedin the debate about whether Abdul-Rauf, who earns approximately $3 million a year dribbling a basketball, had the right to showdisrespect for our flag and country. By the clouded logic of at least one Denver sportswriter, "If Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf does not want to stand for the national anthem if anybody at a sporting event chooses not to stand for thenational anthem for whatever religious or moral reason it istheir right to do so."

Extractions: Abdul-Rauf makes a stand - for money By Ken Hamblin By the logic of the liberal placaters and the "let's get along no matter what the consequences" crowd, it would appear that all is well that ends well as far as Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf isconcerned. By the logic of the "America sucks" gang, their newest African-American victim, Abdul-Rauf, personifies all the best qualities of exercising dissent, a birthright of every Americancitizen. They are correct about Nuggets basketball star Abdul-Rauf's right not to stand for the national anthem - if he quits the NBA.. What I am still seething about is Abdul-Rauf's real reason for doing so. While he said it was because of his religion, he also said on ESPN that he wouldn't honor a flag that stood for "oppression" and " tyranny." And what I can't get over is the fact that many sports writers tried to elevate this youngster's protest to the stature of the great black moral protesters of the past. Few writers and commentators, pardon me, called a spade a spade in this situation. Abdul-Rauf ended his controversy and now stands"in prayer" during the anthem for one reason - money. He was losing more than $30,000 every time he didn't play.
