Entering his second season in Utah, John has spent this summer focusing on the skills of other basketball players. Amaechi realized a dream of his this past August 14th by opening the Amaechi Basketball Centre on the site of Whalley Range High School in Manchester, England. The $4 million facility was conceived and financed entirely by Amaechi and will be under the direction of The Greater Manchester Community Basketball and Sports Association. The centre includes three International-sized basketball courts, an aerobics studio, fitness suite and physiotherapy services and will provide both mentoring resources and athletic programs specifically geared towards adolescents. Amaechi was born in Boston, raised in Manchester, England and went to high school in Toledo, Ohio. John earned a degree in psychology from Penn State and is currently in a doctorate program focusing on child clinical psychology.

Amaechi, who had previously been courted by the Jazz last summer prior to signing on for an additional season with the Magic, now faces the exciting prospect of lining up alongside NBA veterans Karl Malone and John Stockton, plus the talented young Russian forward Andrei Kirilenko - their 1999 first-round draft pick - who recently arrived in Salt Lake City from CSKA Moscow. The news certainly caught the Orlando media on the hop, as they had expected Amaechi to re-sign as a free agent, but the big man spots at the Magic have become very crowded, with this week's acquisition of both Horace Grant and Patrick Ewing, in addition to their recent draft picks Steven Hunter and Brendan Haywood who play the power forward and centre spots respectively. By his own admission, Amaechi had a tougher time with the Magic this past campaign, but still posted an average of 7.9 points and 3.3 rebounds a game during regular season play.

I left it in here - not just to take up space - so that you could see if it stacks up against what people actually say about me. Anyway, it's a bit of an experiment, so I'm not sure how long I'll keep it up. Read on.... John Amaechi is Britain's most successful basketball player ever, but it has been a long and difficult journey that has taken him from Stockport Grammar School to the NBA. John started out his athletic career as a promising rugby player but a chance visit to a basketball court soon changed his life. At the age of 16, John was, in his own words, an overweight boy who towered above all the other kid in his class and was the butt of schoolyard cruelty in his hometown of Stockport. By his own account, basketball saved him, but it was a long shot that hoops and Amaechi would meet. While at a local sports club to play rugby, Amaechi saw people shooting hoops. It was love at first sight. Before long, John was hooked on the game and played it almost constantly. Not only did basketball give John Amaechi something that he was good at, it also provided him with the opportunity to make friends. Suddenly he wasn't laughed at because of his height, he was appreciated for it. John soon decided that basketball was the game for him and that if this was his dream he was going to take it all the way. He sat down one night with his mother, a local GP, and they mapped out their plans for John to become an NBA player.
