Extractions: Head Coach Rick Cruz begins his second full season as mens tennis coach at George Fox University, moving up from assistant coach to head coach near the end of the 1999 season upon the resignation of former coach Josh Schweitz. He also assumes duties this year as the women's tennis coach, replacing Mark Sendelback, who returned to full-time work with Youth for Christ in the Washington County area west of Portland. Cruz guided the Bruins to a 4-4 record to finish the 1999 season, then followed up with an 8-12 overall and 6-6 Northwest Conference record last season. His career record is 12-16. A part of the Bruin men's tennis program since its inception in 1996, Cruz rotated among the No. 1, 2, and 3 singles positions as a player during the first three years of the program (1996-98) He compiled an overall singles record of 15-30 and a doubles record of 11-32, with his best season being his senior year when he went 8-10 in singles and 7-11 in doubles. He graduated from George Fox with a B.A. in business in 1998. Cruz comes from a athletic family. His identical (mirror) twin brother, Rob, is an assistant coach this year after also playing tennis at George Fox (1996-98). His younger brother, Ryan, played basketball and tennis for three years at George Fox (1998-2000), before transferring to Linfield College for his senior season.
Extractions: Below are the top 50 small forwards from the 1999-2000 season. Grant Hill was miles ahead of the pack to take the top ranking for the second straight year. I've also included some stats from the season to give you an idea of how they ended up with their rating. Keep in mind these ratings are on a per-minute basis, so some players may be ranked very highly if they played well in a limited number of minutes:
Extractions: With the pretenders booted out of the way, it's now down to the Kings and Lakers in what is, for all intents and purposes, the NBA Finals. Jersey and Boston, you've had great years, but if you take it to Game Six this June it will be an upset. I have some thoughts on those teams that I'll share Friday when I preview the undercard, er, East, but in the meantime here's a look at the Kings-Lakers showdown: The Lakers were second in Offensive Efficiency this season. The Kings were third. The Kings were sixth in Defensive Efficiency . The Lakers were seventh. They were the only two teams to outscore their opponents by more than seven points a game, despite the difficult Pacific Division schedule. They are the best two teams in the league and everyone knows it. The only question is which one is the best. Injuries are going to be the biggest factor in this series. First and foremost is Peja Stojakovic. I'm presuming he will miss at least the first game or two, and that's going to be a big problem for the Kings. His loss didn't hurt them as much against Dallas because even if they missed a shot it was no big deal; Webber would just get the rebound and throw it down. They're going to face a lot more resistance in this series, and will need his jump shots to stretch out the defense. If Peja can't go that means Hedo Turkoglu or Bobby Jackson gets the call, and here's where the fun with matchups begins. If Jackson comes in that means he's guarding Rick Fox, a potential problem on post-ups; on the other hand it means Fox is guarding Doug Christie, who can blow by him. Jackson was a better player than Turkoglu in the regular season and obviously was huge in the Dallas series, so he may be the choice. Rick Adelman just needs to get him tone it down on that "dribbling out the shot clock" thing he likes to do.

Extractions: Sacramento pros: They play the best team ball in the NBA. First time they've done that. They had trouble doing that with the in-consistent Jason Williams at PG. Bibby has established himself as, in the words of Rick Adleman, "a big time player". That he is. They play passable defense. They involve everyone in the offense, not just Webber and Bibby. Vlade has developed passing skills. Bobby Jackson is a very good player. Doug plays some of the best defense in the leauge. Bibby plays descent defense. As a team, the Kings have palatable defense, and thrive on run n' gun offense, and switches well to post style, and they thrive off the assist.
