3-0 out of 5 stars honest, interesting but uninspiring
If you're looking for the biography of a great man, a hero, this isn't it.But one of the good things that has come from a culture where anyone can publish a book is that you're almost certain to be able to hear both sidesof any story.Barkley has been pilloried by the media for his antics; itis interesting as a fan of sport to read Barkley's account of events andhis role in them.

Other than those details, the book's contents are notgoing to surprise you unless you're unaware of how poor black people growup in the rural South. The requisite funny anecdotes are there, along witha pro's insights into the game of basketball. But if you're looking for abiography that will inspire you, look elsewhere. ... Book Description
Charles Barkley has never been shy about expressing his opinions. Michael Jordan once said that we all want to say the things that Barkley says, but we don’t dare. But even die-hard followers of the all-time NBA great, the star of TNT’s Inside the NBA and CNN’s TalkBack Live, will be astonished by just how candid and provocative he is in this book—and just how big his ambitions are. Though he addresses weighty issues with a light touch and prefers to stir people to think by making them laugh, there’s nothing Charles Barkley shies away from here—not race, not class, not big money, not scandal, not politics, not personalities, nothing. “Early on,” says Washington Post columnist and ESPN talk show host Michael Wilbon in his Introduction, “Barkley made his peace with mixing it up, and decided the consequences were very much worth it to him. And that makes him as radically different in these modern celebrity times as a 6-foot-4-inch power forward.”

If there’s one thing Charles Barkley knows, it’s the crying need for honest, open discussion in this country—the more uncomfortable the subject, the more necessary the dialogue. And if the discussion leader can be as wise, irreverent, (occasionally) profane and (consistently) funny as Charles Barkley, so much the better. Many people are going to be shocked and scandalized by I May Be Wrong but I Doubt It, but many more will stand up and cheer. Like Molly Ivins or Bill O’Reilly, Charles Barkley is utterly his own thinker, and everything he says comes from deep reflection. One way or another, if more blood hasn’t reached your brain by the time you’ve finished this book, maybe you’ve been embalmed.

"Charles Barkley always makes me laugh, and he always makes me think. He hasn't held anything back in his book -- if anything, this is the most personal I've ever seen him. The only whopper is the title: when has Barkley ever admitted to being wrong?"
   TIGER WOODS

"Whether you think he's wrong or right, you'll never find Charles Barkley dull, evasive or afraid. He's blunt, honest and funny as hell, a man with strong convictions and a determination to express them without fear of offending the sensibilities of more timid souls. He's got guts, and there's as much to admire in this book as there is in the man. In I May Be Wrong but I Doubt It, Barkley refers to one of my campaigns as a rough experience. It might have been, but at least I never had to post up against Sir Charles. Now that would have been really hard."
   SENATOR JOHN McCAIN

"I find Charles to be great company on the golf course. Of course, he has never been shy about his opinions, and he has not changed for this book! Charles addresses issues that are important to all of us, not just people close to the game of basketball. Frank, funny and provocative, this is a book that will stir people to think."

1-0 out of 5 stars Barkley is a Moron
After reading this book and the many "opinions" espoused by Mr. Barkley, I can fully understand while Charles was a basketball superstar and not a scholar.I for one could not recommend this book to anyone. You could likely get more insight at your local pub or barbershop.Charles - - - stick to sports commentary and try thinking before you speak.

5-0 out of 5 stars Barkley Gets It
Charles Barkley says that the goal of his book I MAY BE WRONG is to promote dialogue. If the number of times I have referenced the book since reading it is any indication, he has succeeded. Using examples from professional sports, mass media and his personal life to illustrate American structures of power and image, he makes a convincing case that racism is a structure rather than a belief. He speaks a commonsense language that invites you into his conversation, which may surprise readers who expect arrogant rhetoric. I can't wait to read WHO'S AFRAID OF A LARGE BLACK MAN? and to see how else Mr. Barkley will use his influence to change America.

3-0 out of 5 stars A little more Charles, please, and a little less editing
You never know what to expect when you tune in to Charles Barkley or begin reading one of his books, but it's safe to assume that it's going to be interesting and most likely controversial. This book lives up to those expectations. In it, Barkley covers a wide range of topics, many dealing with race or race relations in one way or another, and mostly in a sports setting.

I found the book to be interesting and, in many instances, enlightening, but also to be lacking in Barkely's usual charm and humor. And, although I agree with almost all of what Barkley had to say, I was somewhat disappointed in what he didn't say.By that I mean that Barkely seemed to look at the world from only his own perspective.I would like to have seen what he had to say about the other side of the coin. But no one else ever addresses that side of the coin either, so that was probably too much to expect.

My biggest disappointment with the book, however, was that, although its contents most likely reflect Barkely's true beliefs, its language doesn't appear to be his.I loved to watch Barkely perform as a player and have always enjoyed listening to him express his views and opinions. In this book, I had hoped to read what he had to say in his own words rather than in the more grammatically correct language of an editor.Simply throwing in the word s_ _t every now and then just didn't seem to cut it.

5-0 out of 5 stars I May Be Wrongbut I Doubt It
After being born in a poor Atlanta neighborhood, former NBA star, Charles Barkley shows the reader how a little hope can go a long way. Barkley begins his story growing up and playing basketball in Atlanta; his basketball skills got him a scholarship to the University of Auburn. Fortunately, Charles's mother lived near Auburn and tried to go to all of his games. As you can see, the bond between him and his mother was very strong. After years in Auburn, Charles was then drafted to the Phoenix Suns; from then on he became one of the most renowned basketball players ever. He was traded to the Houston Rockets and retired, being known as one of the best in the NBA. TNT offers Charles as a job as a studio analysis. The question on everyone's lips now is "what will Barkley do next?"
Personally, this is my favorite book. Although, I May Be Wrong but I Doubt It is an adult book, this book is perfect for those who enjoy reading popular sports books and is not easily offended. Barkley hold nothing back but manages to teach the reader some life-long morals about life.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is so.....Charles
Charles Barkely is truly one of a kind. Most people eather love Charles, or hate Charles.I can't get enough of the man.He is an honest man, who will not hesitate to speak his mind.I admire that about him.

The book I May Be Wrong but I doubt It i thought was great.Charles covered many topics in this book.Charles grew up in a small, poor Alabama town.Growing up, he did not have the best relationship with his father who lived across the country. Charles had many problems growing up which he overcame. He went on to play 3 years of basketball at Auburn University. He then turned pro and was drafted 5th overall by the Philidelphia 76ers.There Charles got a chance to grow as a player with great veterans on the team.Charles ended up also playing for Pheonix and Houston. He also covers a lot of other different topics in the book.He talks about racism and how wrong it is.He also talks about how America discriminates against poor people. Charles makes some very good points. If you enjoy watching Charles on TV, this is a great book for you. ... Read more

"Racism," Charles Barkley says, "is the biggest cancer of my lifetime. And I know I can't cure the cancer, but doesn't somebody have to attack it?" Barkley's means of attack in Who's Afraid of a Large Black Man?--not surprising from one of the most outspoken athletes of our time--is to break past the taboo of race by talking about it in the open. What might be surprising is that Barkley steps aside and lets other people talk, too. While in his previous bestseller, I May Be Wrong but I Doubt It, the former NBA MVP and current TNT commentator held forth on a wide variety of subjects, for his new book he sought out a baker's dozen of leading figures in entertainment, business, and government (and yes, one athlete) and sat down with each for a frank conversation about race.

Of course race is not a simple topic, and each discussion heads in its own direction. Tiger Woods speaks both of his biracial identity and of how moving it was to see the black staff at Augusta National lined up to see him put on the green jacket as Masters champion. George Lopez talks about the pressures of creating a breakthrough Latino sitcom in an almost all-white industry. Film producer Peter Guber surprises Barkley when he says that he made The Color Purple out of economic self-interest, not idealism. Many of the discussions turn, like Guber's, not to traditional civil rights but to economics, which Rabbi Steven Leder calls the real "last taboo subject in America." It's clear that the audience Barkley most hopes to reach with this book is the young black men and women that he and many of his interview subjects are concerned about. "We're losing," activist Marian Wright Edelman tells him, "and if we don't stop this trend, we're going to be headed back to slavery." Barkley's celebrity subjects can provide some models for success for those readers, but one also hopes Barkley can continue the conversation by turning the spotlight on those struggling with the problems of race outside the sometimes protective glare of fame. --Tom Nissley

Who's Afraid of Talking to a Large Black Man?

Throughout his career, Charles Barkley has always been willing--quite willing--to call it as he sees it, making him one of the most quotable athletes of his era and, many have suggested, a future political candidate. He's as happy talking issues as talking hoops, and for his new book, Who's Afraid of a Large Black Man? he sat down for conversations across the country about the troublesome topic of race in America. We had our own conversation on the subject with Sir Charles: Read it to find why he wrote the book, what he tells his own biracial daughter about race, and why he thinks sports can be a model for race relations.

Book Description
Who's afraid to talk on the record about the way things really are in this country where race is concerned? Not Charles Barkley, and now, thanks to him, not a host of other important people who carry a wealth of wisdom with them, from Bill Clinton and Barack Obama to Samuel L. Jackson, Tiger Woods and Ice Cube. This is the most personal and important book Charles Barkley has written. He lays himself open here, and because he does, he brings the same straight talk out of everyone with whom he engages in his journey around America to talk about the things that matter most that are the hardest to say - things having to do with race, and money, and identity. Why is it that we can all talk about all sorts of big issues, but when the subject of race is raised, we all freeze up? Who but Charles Barkley can put us into the passenger seat next to him for one of the most fantastic American road trips in recent memory? Who's Afraid of a Large Black Man is so surprising, challenging, and entertaining, so compelling to read, that its importance sneaks up on you and knocks you clean into another state of mind. Bold, honest, funny, moving, occasionally shocking-everything we feel we can't say but it really is time we did. Only Charles Barkley could make this conversation happen, and for that alone he is a national treasure.Download Description

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm Not a Basketball Fan
Although I'm not a huge basketball fan, I know who Charles Barkley is and was curious to see what type of book he would write. Consequently I was overjoyed while reading the introduction it grabbed me from the start. It's an easy read and the writers puts you at ease by making you feel as if you're listening in on a conversation with friends. I am throughly enjoying being enlightened, informed and educated all at the same time. I only wish I had know about the book when it first came out. Excellent read, I have bought numerous copies as gifts for the young men in my life.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
For some strange reason I am a Charles Barkley fan, that is why I recieved the book.I was disappointed, it wasn't what I expected at all!Know what you are buying before ordering this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sir Charles Shoots and Scores!
I read this book over a year ago, and continue to recommend it to friends (people of color and non-people of color alike). It is among the best books that I read last year (certainly the easiest read about issues of race/ethnicity). It exceeded my expectations: I could hardly put it down! While some chapters are somewhat informal, that is part of its charm. It reads as though Charles is sitting in the living room telling the story. I appreciate the diversity of celebrities that he assembled for this book. While it may remind some of "People Magazine", there lies its strength. Sir Charles' book will touch every person who is affected by race issues in America, be they an educator, a rabbi, or President of the United States, if they make themselves available. I recommend it highly!

5-0 out of 5 stars Required Reading
This book should be required reading for every African American family in this country and particularly our schools. It speaks candidly about the things WE need to do to pull ourselves out of the downward spiral we find ourselves in. Anyone who does not like this book is because it gives us accountabiity for improving our position. It clearly spells out that this is about economic diversion and that is from where all power and financial wealth is derived. And, it shows that even the likes of Tiger Woods suffered rascism; perservered and over came. I am buying multiple copies to give to my adult sons and to other friends and family.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sir Charles on point!
As a non-sports fan, books by athletes tend to bore me silly aside from ones with strong historical value. A co-worker recommended this to me and I could not put it down.

Sir Charles basically talks to a number of famous and not-so famous people about race relations. These admittedly free-flowing conversations are quite revelaing and since most of them speak from personal experiences and not polemics so common in books of this kind, it makes a better read. Tiger Woods' recollections of hardcore racism debunks his spoiled-kid image and George Loez' struggle against anti-Latino stereotyping confims what I have always felt of the similarity of the struggles of so-called "minority" groups.

Interestingly , Bill Cosby's controversial recent comments on the state of Black America are mentioned frequently throughout the interviews. It would have helped if the Cos was actually interviewed (perhaps he's planning his own book, as was the case with Justice Clarence Thomas whose current book prevented his interview from being quoted here-that would have also been interesting).

But just when you think that few people would have anything new to add to the subject beyond rhetoric-read this-you'll be glad you did. ... Read more

The whole book consists of quotes from Barkley grouped by category, such as race, basketball, Phoenix, etc...I guess the other person who wrote a review is not a fan of Barkley, but this book contains some funny and witty quotes that show Barkley's strong opinions about various issues, people, etc.. If you enjoy watching Barkley on TNT I don't see why you wouldn't like this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Charles Barkley Star Forward or Big Shot
The book title is Charles Barkley Star Forward by Ron Knapp. The author supports his sentences well, but he didn't really make good complete sentences. It was like he didn't really look over the book after he had written it. If your a Suns fan and a basketball follower then this book would at least show you some history or background and also some stats about him.
The form that this book is written in was the author started on the most current part in which the book was written in and then he went back to talk about Charles' rookie years and his life. Then the author went back to the current events and explained his current results.
This book isn't very long, however it gets the points across even though the book is older the stats are correct because it takes you all the way through his whole career and life until he retired. The book shows the point of how great a player he was and how much he gave for his team. "He'll do everything he can to win a championship." -Suns head coach Paul Westphal
Charles did everything, but was unsuccessful in the first attempt at a national championship against Michael Jordan and the highflying Bulls. The book is strait forward and doesn't really tell much about his full career with the Suns and his teams before them.
This book does contain his results of his championships, stats from college, and important games with important people in the games such as other star players that were in the NBA. It also tells the awards that he had received for example, the MVP award that he got his first year with the Suns.
This book doesn't really keep you in it and I think this book should be updated and written more accurately. Right now this book would be on a fifth grade reading level, and I would recommend this book for them.

3-0 out of 5 stars From the horse's mouth itself
Charles Barkley is a NBA legend, cultural icon, and a brash black man who writes his complaints down into books instead of rapping them away on albums. This book is full of complaints from the Round Mound of Rebound. He complains about the NBA, other players, referees, the management at several franchises, America's parents, America's teenagers, and of course, himself. This is Barkley's first book, and in it he describes his youth, his entry into basketball, his days in college, and finally his life in the NBA.He goes over some of the challenges he had in his life and how he came to overcome them.He also talks about the people he has encountered in his life, such as his family members, teammates such as Rick Mahorn, Moses Malone, and Dr. J, and opponents such as Michael Jordan and Bill Laimbeer.Through it all, he writes with wit, comedy, and the occasional bad word. The book is good reading, and easy reading at it, though not appropriate for anyone under 13 years old in my mind.

4-0 out of 5 stars Speaking The Truth
Speaking The Truth

This book that I've read was called Outrageous Charles Barkley. The book is mainly about a young talented man who went to the NBA to become one of the greatest basketball players of all time.Charles speaks the truth because even though he can dunk a basketball doesn't mean he should raise your children. What he is trying to say is kids have role models and they try to be just like then in many ways.So if your child watches and follows those role models moves, then he or she is going to be in trouble. He also meant that it is not his job to raise your kids because he is they role model.

What I like about this book is that Charles Barkley is speaking the truth in many ways. The book talks about everything that a person would think or say about the book before they actually read it.He talks about his personal life and how he is paid to play basketball. So if he was to get in trouble outside of the basketball world don't think he is a bad person because ever one makes mistakes all throughout life.

Now what I didn't like about the book is when he speaks about things I want him to keep going and don't stop until every little information is said and done.Another reason is the people in the story weren't really talking about to many details but they could have done better. My main reason for not liking this book is because they did not have a whole lot of pictures to describe the scene of the situation.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not exactly the Jordan Rules
If you're looking for an inside the lockerroom, behind the scenes style book about the Phoenix Suns, then this really isn't what you want. This book, I assume, is a direct fallout from the famous Sam Smith Jordan Rules book, because it is quite evident that Tulumello is not traveling with the team or with the club anymore than a normal reporter. That does not make this book a bad book, but rather not as intimate as many Suns fans would have hoped.

I am a Phoenix Suns fan and a huge Kevin Johnson fan. First of all, the author mentions KJ's performance during the 94-95 Houston series at least a dozen times, yet not once does he mention the Hakeem dunk rated as the 4th best of all on NBA Shootaround this year. So, obviously his credibility is shot to me.
On a serious note, I was hoping to see a personal side of KJ, or at least have some glimpse into what made him tick. Not only do I not come away with that, I don't get that intimacy with ANYONE on the team.

The author uses public comments and quotations frequently throughout the piece, not a bad thing. But because we don't have a second look at the personas of these players, it in turn produces one dimensional cardboard characters. No one outside Colangelo, the players and coaches are looked at at length, which reinforces the notion of distance between the players and the reader.
Here is what the book is, right or wrong, good or bad. This book is more or less a running diary of the times and tribulations of the Suns during the 95-96 season. You get background on the playing careers of Barkley, KJ, Majerle, Hot Rod Williams, Danny Manning along with the professional histories of Colangelo, Fitzsimmons, and Westphal. The remainder of the book contemplates the inevitable exit of Barkley and mentions one amusing Barkley prank, but more or less is simly a recap of every game the Suns played.
I could easily have seen this book being printed as an insert in the Arizona Republic recapping the season because of the bland, dry, and stock fashion the material is presented. So, if you're looking to relive the old times of the Suns, great book. If you're looking for the Jordan Rules about the Suns, this isn't what you are looking for.

4-0 out of 5 stars outrageous!
If you really want the inside dope on how the Suns screwed up their championship hopes, read this book. It certainly paints Charles Barkley in a bad light, but then again he is not alone in the failure of the Suns to win the whole thing. So the book does do justice to not just explaining Sir Charles's last season w. Phx., but also the whole Barkley era in Phx. As a big Barkley fan, it gave me pause for thought as to whether he has what it takes to win it all. No doubt he's a Hall of Fame player, a great jokester, but his dedication to winning it all seems lacking. Still he has given the game a whole lot more than most. For that I am grateful and the book does show him warts and all to be one of the true characters of sports. And these days we need guys like him to make sports fun! Highly recommended even if you hate Sir Charles. ... Read more

Product Description
The thing about race, Charles Barkley says, is we talk about it only when something bad happens and tempers are high, and so all we do is shout at one another across a chasm that's wide and getting wider. The rest of the time we try to pretend that the chasm isn't there. The way to get real about things, Barkley demonstrates in this book, isn't to shout and point fingers, but to expose all the hypocrisy and phoniness that keep us from talking about the way things really are, and even to find the humor in all the crazy disconnects and misunderstandings between the different races in America. It's time someone did, because things aren't getting better, as he's here to show us. Racism has just gone underground: Sure, celebrities like him get the white-glove treatment, but in the meantime, we're living in a country that's growing steadily more racially segregated. If you're white, what are the odds you live or work with a significant number of black people? The odds are low and getting lower. When news of the Kobe Bryant case broke, 70 percent of whites polled thought he did it; 70 percent of blacks polled thought he was innocent. What's that about?, Charles Barkley wants to know. Until we learn to see into one another's minds and hearts a little more and, crucially, to laugh with one another, we're just going to keep living the lie that racism has gone away just because it's out of plain sight. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars He's jealous, but not in the way you think
If the game's fixed, then how is Charles Barkley any better than Micheal Jordan by getting money, power and fame from it-- or at least, how does he have any room to talk, just because Jordan profits MORE?He should be suing the NBA for running a crooked game, not blaming one of its pawns. I think that he just doesn't want to bite the hand that feeds him, so he instead acts like a jealous dog and bites a pampered pet.

3-0 out of 5 stars one more word
I have mixed feelings about Michael Jordan. On the one hand, he is a great athlete.I respect his work ethic. He has turned in a number of great performances and is no doubt one of the greatest to have ever played the game of basketball.

There is a flipside.Michael Jordan got allkinds of special treatment while he was in the NBA.He was the firstplayer I noticed who was granted all kinds of trips to the charity stripebecause of unbelievably, ticky tack calls. He scored at least ten points agame at the free throw line from bogus calls. It was great when there wasa picture session for 'greats of the game' with Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, and Michael Jordan.Magic told Larry not to stand too close to Michael orthey might call a foul.In front of reporters and television viewers, thatwas a classic comment by Magic.I believe Mike got 99% of all calls in hisfavor because he was such a cash cow for the NBA.Dominique Wilkins wasrobbed of a slam dunk championship when Mike scored a perfect 50 doing thesame dunk Dr. J did years before.I doubt Dr. J ever received a perfect 50for it.Dominique's dunk was much more impressive, and he received a 49.5. Please.Mike got in a fight with Reggie Miller, and only Miller gotsuspended at first.Only after there was an outcry did Mike get suspended. How are Mike's punches different?Mike elbowed Kevin Johnson to theground for all to see, and Kevin was called for blocking!

I am not tooimpressed that the bulls beat the lakers in the NBA finals.Magic wasdouble teamed every game every minute he was in.On top of that, JamesWorthy and Byron Scott were injured.Magic and Larry never won threechampionships in a row because the competition, teams, and players in the80s were much better than the nineties.Luc Longley, Will Perdue, BillCartwright, or Bill Wennington stopping Kareem?Ha!

Sport Magazinerecently had a piece on the ten greatest moments and ten greatest playersever in the NBA.Mike was ranked number one all time player.Kudos toMike for mentioning in 'For the love of the game' that to pick a"greatest ever" is impossible because of all the different erasand evolutions of basketball. The nineties bulls were given three of theten greatest moments in NBA history. This is just more Mike bias.Give mea break. There are hundreds of classic and amazing moments in NBA history. One of the moments picked was Mike beating the Jazz in the final minutesof his last game.He put his hand on Bryon Russel's backside and shovedhim out of the way. Then Mike made the game winnig shot. All eyes were onMike, but the ref did not make the obvious call.

There is also Mike'sarrogance.According to him, Wilt Chamberlain was a fluke eventhough Wiltwas a great all around player. He made a comment about Magic and Larryreaching a 'certain level of greatness' and that the two were not good ondefense. What? Are we talking about the same Larry Bird?Shaquille Onealis also much better and much improved than Mike gives him credit for.Shaqhas turned into a solid defender, passer, and he works hard at both ends ofthe floor.

Mike's corporate poster boy behavior is laughable. He didads for AT&T and then MCI.The Wayans family is also split between thetwo companies.Mike talked about the enviroment in Rayovac ads and thenpitches hot dogs?Mike is not the only athlete who will pitch anything andeverything to make millions.I wonder if Mike has checked into Nike'slabor practices.

Players like Mike and Charles Barkley soured me ontheNBA.Charles played like a thug and got away with it because he was astar.Plus, Charles insisted on wearing number 34 at Philadelphiaeventhough it was retired for NBA great Billy Cunningham. The startreatment and inflated egos has grown old, and that has turned a lot ofpeople off to sports.I miss the Lakers and Celtics match ups of the1980s.

1-0 out of 5 stars JEALOUS
AFTER READING THIS BOOK I CONCLUDED THAT SIR CHARLES IS JEALOUS OF MICHAEL JORDAN!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
This book is exacatly what I wanted. It showed evert thing I expected and wanted. I not only shows the life and work of his lustrous but on his life before he was the most fundimenally sound basketball player. It showed thatnot only does he play basketball but it showed that he played 3 othersports. When I read this book I thought it would be like every other bookon him saying how great he is and all his great feats. It did but at thesame time it showed how he achieved it. It shows you how many times it tookand what it takes to be the greatest ball player in the world.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for MJ fans, not bad for non-fan either
A book filled with comments from MJ's peers and celebrity admirers. Would've liked more, but a good one to add to your collection. ... Read more
