5-0 out of 5 stars What a great encore!
A magnum opus of the premiere degree, Mr. Sachare, throughphotos and scholarly chroniclization, depicts the evolution of thegame from it's genesis in James Nasmith's Springfield gym with a soccer ball and two peach buckets, all the way to the manner in which he approaches with didactical fury it's evolution to it's current Nike, gangsta status on the playgrounds of Harlem. From Magic Johnson to the lumbering Bob Kurland, to photos with Michael Jordan dunking the ball, to Larry Bird popping the trey, to dominique "Human highlight film" Wilkins, to the adroitness of Tiny Archibald's ball handling. Alex Sachare understands both the playground, AND the locker room aspects of what he rightly calls the great American pasttime. I found especially interesting his polemical approach to the evolution of tartan and parquet surfaces in some of the cold-weather college basketball arenas of the the Northeastern U.S. Kudos to Mr. Sachare for another great work! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars The First Dream Team...
In 1992, USA Basketball and the US Olympic Committee finally acknowledged a painful truth, that US collegians could no longer compete on an equal basis in Olympic basketball against the world's professional players. The solution: pick a "dream team" of eleven mature professionals and one outstanding collegiate player to represent the US, and select Detroit Pistons Coach Chuck Daley to lead it."America's Dream Team: The Quest For Olympic Gold", authored by Daly with Alex Sachare, is the story of their Olympic experience.

The Dream Team was perhaps unique in its collective talent and experience.Eight of the twelve players have since been inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame; at least two more should join them in due course.Three of the four coaches are also members.Much of the book is devoted to individual biographies of the players, including such icons as Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan, and Charles Barkley, among others.

The book itself briefly chronicles the American experience in Olympic Basketball before getting into the selection of the team and its preparation for the Games. The actual competition is something of an anti-climax.The book frames Daly's commentary with lots of excellent color photography of the team, on and off court, and documents the intriguing experience of seeing professional rivals like Larry Bird and Patrick Ewing make common cause.

"America's Dream Team" is essentially a high quality, professionally-done sourvenir book, but one that is likely to appeal to die-hard basketball fans who remember the original "Dream Team."

Product Description
Based on unprecedented access granted to the authors, including exclusive interviews with Arsene Wenger, "Arsenal" looks in detail at the club's transformation into a global super-power. From 'boring, boring Arsenal' to the most exciting young team on the planet, the third richest football club in the world playing in a brand new and invariably sold-out state-of-the-art stadium - it's largely down to one man. Set during a season when the club has dazzled on the pitch and announced a turnover of GBP200 million off it, football guru Alex Fynn and "The Gooner" editor Kevin Whitcher dissect the events that led to Wenger's arrival and his 11 years at the club to reveal just how extensively his influence, from the training ground to the boardroom, has shaped the modern Arsenal. As close to Wenger as anyone outside the club, they examine his footballing philosophy, his training methods, his hopes, fears and aspirations for his team and his club - not to mention his failings - as no-one has ever done before. "Alex Fynn is a football guru, and I'm always interested to hear what he has to say." - Arsene Wenger. ... Read more

British bookstores are filled with English football biographies, photo books, tactics and player tell alls; this book, however, seems unique in its focus on the business side of Arsene Wenger's North London giant. Arsenal is different from the other top four Premier teams (Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool) in its corporate structure and divided ownership. Fynn and Witcher detail the shareholder fights and strategies, the shifting allegiances all impacting Wenger's grand plan for the team. Packed with gossip, club history and game day analyses for the 2007/08,2008/09 seasons, the authors provide the reader with a fascinating story of the modern day Arsenal in the age of big money. ... Product Description
'An interesting and entertaining book on United, arguably the first since Roy Keane's' Sunday Tribune 'Taylor's book is an invaluable and engrossing investigation into the United manager's occasionally fractious relationship with the press' FourFourTwo When Man Utd deposed Chelsea as Premiership champions at the end of the 2006-07 season, Sir Alex Ferguson described it as the 'greatest achievement' of his twenty years in charge. A year earlier his managerial career had reached its madir amid speculation he would be forced out of Old Trafford. Those two seasons serve as a snap shot of the highest and lowest ebbs of Alex Ferguson's career. As a portrait of Ferguson, no other two seasons can encapsulate all that he embodies and why he is still the greatest manager in the game. Written over the course of two eventful, diverse and controversial seasons, This Is the One offers a unique portrait of Sir Alex Ferguson from a privileged position behind the scenes. As a football writer for the Guardian, Daniel Taylor has been there from day one, and seen every side of Ferguson, mixing the flint-faced authoritarian caricature, the infamous hairdryer treatment, and the softer, humane side of an immensely likeable man . Entertaining, revelatory, sometimes shocking but always affectionate, this is an honest portrait of a man who infuriates as much as he inspires, but whose heart is as big as the Man Utd trophy room. 'For anybody who wants to know more about the enigma that is Fergie, they should read this book' Star ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A good addition to every GK training library
This book is light at 120 pages but packs in drills and words for all facets for the beginning keeper - probably U15. Warm up, fitness, and agility are also covered. Good blend of words and pictures to describe techniques. As is my complaint with all GK instruction, there aren't enough words, pictures and progressions to properly (safely) build up a beginner keeper that doesn't posses natural ability.

4-0 out of 5 stars helpful for the starter

Product Description
When a diminutive Scottish footballer from a tough mining village became the kingpin in Herbert Chapman's legendary Arsenal line-up between the wars, he set the seal on a footballing career that is still talked about today. Arguably the finest inside forward of all time, the official history of the Football Association describes him as, 'a little midfield genius'. 'No-one like him ever kicked a ball', George Allison, who succeeded Herbert Chapman as Arsenal manager, said. 'He simply left the opposition looking on his departing figure with amazement'. From his deep-lying inside-forward position, James was the creative hub of the classic Arsenal team of the 1930's, collecting the ball from defenders, then spraying passes to either wing. One of Scotland's 'Wembley Wizards' who humiliated England 5-1 at Wembley, two years later he helped Arsenal win the FA Cup for the first time. "The Times" reported: 'The skill and bold tactics of James that turned the scale in favour of his side'. But James also had a knack of making his name known outside footballing circles.'Wee Alex' was a genius with his feet, a comedian with baggy shorts and flapping shirt sleeves, who could set the crowd in a roar, an argumentative and sometimes stubborn man with a ready wit and a talent for publicity. James' often difficult life and his dazzling career are recounted here in lively detail - from his first boots (bought by an elder brother) and the struggle towards his first professional games with Raith Rovers in 1922, to the magic moment when Herbert Chapman signed him up for Arsenal for the princely sum of GBP 9,000 - an action that bound him to the club, then the epitome of footballing glamour, even after Chapman's death and his own retirement from first-class football. In this lively, profusely illustrated biography, John Harding has drawn on the recollections of men and women who knew James well, both on and off the pitch, as well as writers and journalists down the years, to vividly recreate the life and times of a remarkable man and one of the greatest players in the history of the game. ... Product Description
The Great Divide is the absorbing inside story of two great English rivals, Arsenal and Spurs, and their rise to the challenges of the 1999-2000 season, now updated with three chapters on the 2000-2001 campaign. Not a match-by-match account, but an odyssey through the events and issues that shaped the game during the 1999-2000 season. The Great Divide reveals the way the two clubs are seen by the people who matter: the managers, the players, the directors, the fans and the media. For Arsenal the priority is a winning team. At Tottenham the priority has appeared to be to ensure good business. Now The Great Divide is fully updated in paperback, immediately after a period of high activity in north London. Arsenal and Tottenham are set to clash in the semi-final of the FA Cup in a year ending in a '1', and the Gunners have also made it through to the last stages of the Champions League. Meanwhile a new dawn may again be breaking at Spurs, as Sugar has finally relinquished the chairmanship, making way for Enic, who swiftly sacked George Graham when he appeared to be making progress, but have replaced him with one of White Hart Lane's favourite sons in Glenn Hoddle. Are the good times set to roll again? With unprecedented access to the boardroom, the press box, as VIP corporate freeloaders and as fans, Alex Fynn and Olivia Blair give a unique perspective on the state of play at two great football clubs. But this is not just a tale of the great north London rivalry, The Great Divide is a story of the money, hard graft, and the commerclalism rampant in the Premier League. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Dull, Duller, Dullest
This book is rich in detail but extraordinarily dull to read.Only the most avid Arsenal or Tottenham supporters will find much of the information interesting, and the writing simply is not good enough to support the weight of the minutae the authors provide.Fans of English soccer in general would be well advised to look elsewhere for offseason reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars fascinating and full of detail
i've read all of fynn's books (including the one on cantona), and his knowledge of the inner workings of the football industry is unrivalled. the great north london double act, spurs and arsenal, is clearly his speciality, and what you get here is an intricate play by play account of what happened in 1999-2000. Fynn and his co-writer Olivia Blair have wide-ranging access to the high-powered figures involved and have a healthily cynical attitude to their activities. if you want the detail behind the headlines, look no further... ... Chic Charnley is one of the most controversial, colorful characters in Scottish football history. Blessed with awesome talent, incredible ability and spectacular skills, he's the player who could - and should - have been one of the biggest names in sport. But, by his own admission, he blew it. Here he tells all in the most revealing, unputdownable book of the game. The maverick midfielder tells it like it is, including the real reason he did not sign for his boyhood idols Celtic; the genuine regrets of a stormy career that kept him in the headlines for all the wrong reasons; his bad boy image, crazy antics and why he was sent off a record amount of times; how he ruined Henrik Larsson's Celtic debut; the day he was attacked by a thug with a sword - during training! - and much more. Here, for the first time, "Chic Charnley" talks about the roller coaster career that saw him play for Partick Thistle, Hibs, St. Mirren, Dundee, Ayr, Clydebank, Hamilton and a few others in between. It's a journey through football with tales as outrageous as the character himself! ... Read more
