Product Description
Martin O'Neill is one of the most brilliant, successful and intriguing of the new manager/coaches to emerge from British football. Alex Montgomery's acclaimed biography brings O'Neill's story right up to date with an account of his first few months in charge at Aston Villa and deals with every aspect of his life and remarkable career from the early days as a player in Northern Ireland to his joining the tyrannical Brian Clough at Nottingham Forest. From non-league Grantham Town via Shepshed Dynamo and Wycombe Wanderers, to Norwich City, Leicester City and Celtic, where he broke the Rangers monopoly of Scottish football, to respected BBC pundit and a new role at Aston Villa, the book chronicles O'Neill's managerial triumphs. Montgomery offers a rare insight into the beliefs, lifestyle and ambitions of this private and complex football man. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars TerrifficFootballer/Manager Biography
If you like biographies of footballers or managers this one's a must. A fascinating look at a very private and incredibly successful man, both as a player with Nottingham Forest under the enigmatic Clough where he won 2 European Cups and as a manager with non-league clubs where he cut his teeth and then with Leicester City and Celtic. The book was written before O'Neill left Celtic so is not current. What's not inc.is much information on his private life. The book was written without O'Neill's permission so does not inc. accounts from current friends or family. As a Forest fan from that era I would've liked more Forest/Clough information as well. But for all that it is very well written & a great read. ... Read more

Product Description
During the 1990s the football industry has undergone a revolution of spectacular proportions: money men have become as important as the players and managers, and the workings of club stocks and shares, multi-million-pound transfers, merchandise, television deals and cash bungs are as high-profile as the matches played. This revolution and its repercussions for the game's future are discussed in this book, which focuses especially on the 1998 World Cup Finals and their impact on English football, and Manchester United's 1997/98 season at home and in Europe. It goes behind the scenes to explain the business and politics of what is now a major international industry. ... Read more

Product Description
The football business is changing while the game's traditional regulatory institutions are struggling to keep up with the problems raised by the sport's success. This work takes a look at who runs football and where the increasing amounts of money that flow into the game actually go. Contributors include David Conn, author of "The Football Business"; Armand Caraben, a former general manager of Barcelona Football Club; Adam Brown, a member of the Football Task Force; Brian Lomax, elected director of Northampton Town; Andy Walsh, chairman of the Independent Manchester United Supporters' Association; and a number of leading academics and analysts in the areas of corporate governance and regulation. Despite the problems, the authors are far from pessimistic. There are new forms of ownership emerging that combine fan equity with the new commercialism, and increasing revenue provides an opportunity to strengthen football from the grass-roots up. Seizing these opportunities means learning lessons from the past and developing systems of regulation that will enable the whole game to flourish - from the local park teams to the Premier League. ... Product Description
Now fully revised and updated throughout, with much new material, Michael Crick's bestselling biography paints an unforgettable portrait of one of the giants of British football. Ferguson's own autobiography was a great bestseller on its publication in 1999. But Fergie's book told the story through only one pair of eyes. Now, Michael Crick, acclaimed biographer of Jeffrey Archer, writes the first fully rounded, independent portrait of Sir Alex. From his roots as a Govan trade unionist to the current peaks of world football, Crick applies the same forensic skills he applied to his study of the disgraced Tory peer. Through hundreds of interviews with those who've known and worked with Sir Alex, and delving back through the archives, Michael Crick explores the money and the politics of football, the bust-ups, the fights, and those memorable moments of glory. Charismatic and charming, volcanic and ruthless, searingly ambitious and astonishingly successful. What makes Sir Alex Ferguson tick? How did this complex character become the most successful manager in British football, producing -- first at Aberdeen and now at Manchester United -- two of the most prolific trophy-grabbing machines in the modern game? THE BOSS is essential reading not just for Manchester United fans and football followers in general, but for anyone interested in the skills of successful management. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good to know Sir Alex, Not for learning manegerial technic
Originally, I was keen to learn how Sir Alex F. have made the Man United Team in to world class and a successful one in term of trophies winning and also building up the Man United brand.

However , the book allocate huges space in telling stories of what were going on , how Sir Alex comment about it and how people involved comment about it. In managerial point of view , the book tells me a lot about Sir Alex F.'s caring and his aggressiveness to people under and around him , his determination, discipline , passion and his aggressiveness in achieving his goals and how he uses his anger to get his goals achieved. They are about his characters but not managerial technic that I was looking for.

I want to say here that I am not commenting this book against the book's title or objective but reviewing the book against my own requirement on my Management Technic learning.

Therefore , my last words are this book is good for people who want to learn his life, his view, his personality , Manchester United Team history which I have learned a lot from the book. But I learn not much about Sir Alex's great thoughts behind his great moves he have been making to make the team successful.

At the end, the book made me "in to" the English football industry more that I have ever been. ... Read more

How dominant, how revolutionary, how outsized a presence isMichael Jordan? The answer is found in this comprehensive andattractively illustrated team reference guide on the best players everto suit up in a Chicago Bulls uniform. The first playerprofiled--Jordan, of course--gets 30 pages of coverage. The nextchapter--the bios of the 11 most distinguished Bulls other than Jordan--isonly two pages longer. Still, this is much more than an homage toMichael. The Encyclopedia examines how the team was built andtraces its history season by season; records the 16 most memorablemoments along the way; analyzes rivalries (Bulls-Lakers '71-'73;Bulls-Pistons '88-'91; and Bulls-Knicks '91-'96); profiles coaches, owners, and announcers; compares the best Bulls seasons to those ofother great NBA dynasties; and, as required by the genre, dishes outplenty of stats in all the necessary categories. Unlike most sportsreferences, this one's as pleasing to look at as it is to thumbthrough. It's got info, but it's also got game. --JeffSilverman ... Read more

Excerpt: The Philadelphia 76ers are an American professional basketball team based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. They are a member of the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Formerly known as the Syracuse Nationals, the 76ers joined the NBA when it was founded in 1949. The Nationals had a record of 5113 in their first NBA season under coach Al Cervi and won the Eastern Division crown. The franchise were purchased by Philadelphian Irv Kosloff and Ike Richma in the spring of 1963; the NBA approved their franchise shift on May 22 and name change to the Philadelphia 76ers on August 6. This brought professional basketball back to the city, which had been without a team since the Golden State Warriors left Philadelphia in 1962. Eddie Jordan, who was hired as head coach in 2009, was fired on April 15, 2010. There have been 23 head coaches for the Philadelphia 76ers franchise. The franchise won their first NBA championship as the Syracuse Nationals in the 1955 NBA Finals under coach Cervi. Their second title was won as the Philadelphia 76ers in 1967, coached by Alex Hannum, who has the highest career winning percentage for the 76ers. Billy Cunningham, who played and coached with the 76ers for 17 years, is the franchise's all-time leader in both regular season and playoff games coached and wins. He coached the team to their most recent title in 1983. Hannum, Jack Ramsay, and Larry Brown are the only members of the franchise to have been inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame as coaches.
