Product Description
From songs to slang, inflatable bananas to players' haircuts and sheepskin coats, this aims to be an intelligent and entertaining look at the written, spoken and visual language of association football. As a cornerstone of popular culture, the game has always influenced and been influenced by changes in fashion and society. The book explores the way in which football expressions, from "back to square one" to "sick as a parrot", have entered the language and how football commentary, journalism and debate have changed over the years, from the times when the goalkeeper was "guardian of the posts" (because journalists were paid by the word) to the individual styles of Motson and Moore. There is also a look at the colourful (literally and figuratively) language of spectators, players (on and off the pitch) and managers, and the author delves into the social codes and status symbols displayed from the club boardroom to the terraces. ... Manchester United fans have a fickle reputation. Players are often singled out for criticism while others can get away with murder. This was never truer than in the late 1980s when Ferguson, following a stuttering start to his Old Trafford career, was scapegoated by supporters. Here the author, one of the few to have actively supported United's manager during this bleak period, details his remarkable relationship with United's legendary manager. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars best in years
This is a great story and I had to read the book from cover to cover. It's funny, insightful and shows just what it is that a real fan goes through. I had tears in my eyes from the despcriptive narrative and it also had me crying with laughter. Very funny indeed. Go buy it if you're a true fan.

5-0 out of 5 stars ManUnited Fans. Don't miss this!
I loved this account, and felt I was right there with the writer. Anyone who has stood on the terraces, especially ManU fans, should read this book. A funny, emotional, graphic record of this 'love-struck' guy for his team, even when they were at rock bottom. I couldn't leave this book, and will read it again before too long. ... Read more

Excerpt: Dennis Wayne Johnson (September 18, 1954 February 22, 2007), nicknamed "DJ", was an American professional basketball player for the National Basketball Association's (NBA) Seattle SuperSonics, Phoenix Suns and Boston Celtics and coach of the Los Angeles Clippers. He was an alumnus of Dominguez High School, Los Angeles Harbor College and Pepperdine University. A prototypical late bloomer, Johnson overcame early struggles and had a successful NBA playing career. Drafted 29th overall in 1976 by the Seattle SuperSonics, Johnson began his professional career as a shooting guard. He eventually led the Sonics to their only NBA championship in 1979, winning the NBA Finals Most Valuable Player Award (MVP). After a short stint with the Phoenix Suns, he became the starting point guard for the Boston Celtics, with whom he won two more championships. Johnson was voted into five All-Star Teams, one All-NBA First and one Second Team, and nine consecutive All-Defensive First and Second Teams. Apart from his reputation as a defensive stopper, Johnson was known as a clutch player who made several decisive plays in NBA playoffs history. The Celtics franchise has retired Johnson's number 3 jersey, which hangs from the rafters of the TD Garden, the home arena of the team. On April 5, 2010, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame officially announced that Johnson had been posthumously elected to the Hall and would be formally inducted on August 13. Excerpt: Bryan Colangelo (born June 1, 1965) is the President and General Manager of the Toronto Raptors of the NBA. He is the son of Phoenix sports mogul, Jerry Colangelo. He attended Cornell University. He was the 2005 and 2007 recipient of the NBA Executive of the Year Award. Colangelo began his NBA front-office career with the Phoenix Suns, a franchise then owned by his father. He was a part of that organization for 15 years, the last 11 as General Manager. During his tenure in Phoenix, Colangelo made a number of transactions that have received wide praise across the NBA, including the drafting of would-be superstars Shawn Marion and Amar'e Stoudemire. Colangelo was roundly criticized for his trade of Jason Kidd to the New Jersey Nets for Stephon Marbury, but corrected this mistake by trading Marbury and oft-injured Penny Hardaway to the New York Knicks for several contracts. The additional salary cap space created by this trade allowed Colangelo to sign Steve Nash back from the Dallas Mavericks in the summer of 2004. Nash would go on to be the 2004-05 and 2005-06 NBA Most Valuable Player, and the Suns would go 6220 and claim the top playoff seed in the Western Conference in the 2004-05 season. As a result, Colangelo was awarded the 2005 NBA Executive of the Year Award. In the summer of 2005, Colangelo traded disgruntled shooting guard Joe Johnson to the Atlanta Hawks for two future first-round picks and Boris Diaw, who then won the 2006 NBA Most Improved Player Award. Colangelo also dealt Quentin Richardson to the New York Knicks. Despite the loss of these two players and the loss of Stoudemire for...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=4154509 ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A book for all REAL Man Utd fans !
It is with much expectations that I ordered this book, and after running through it at breakneck pace,it certainly didn't let me down.In fact,it justified the respect I have for this man who single-handedly turned the fortune of one of the biggest clubs in the world. For too many times he has been maligned and chided for losing the plot, but what he has done for the club deserved more.A thoroughly honest book, where Sir Alex went out of his way to explained all that has happened in his life, where he was born, his beginning in football, taking over St-Mirren,Aberdeen,and then Manchester United. The book has also been cited as one that managers of all industries and walks of life should read. The contents not only explained about football,it also explained about his philosophy in life, and the foundation of his management. It is truly inspirational, and I would recommend it to anyone who feel that his life is somehow lacking in directions and goals.Allow Sir Alex to guide you to your desired destination.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bravo from a yank
Stellar read with much insight into football (soccer) at many different levels.Sir Alex has an amazing story to tell and if you want to better understand the global love hate relationship with Manchester United...no need to look further. This is not a book on soccer tactics although they are discussed, but instead is exactly what the the title states; the story of Ferguson's life.It is well written and he doesn't hold back or sugar coat any controversial happenings, he rather tells it as it is through his mind's eye which is refreshing and makes for an engaging read.I recommend this to anyone who is interested in seeing pure passion, leadership and hard work mold boys into men who win trophies and titles for the record books, but the greater achievement is their development of integrity and character that Sir Alex instills in them through tough love and discipline.Ferguson is always fighting the good fight, battle by battle and leading with a steadfast faith knowing that the end justifies the means. This book expanded my horizons (being from the states) and I couldn't put it down and am looking forward to hearing the rest of the story when it is all said and done.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great leader
It's hard to feel how important decisions that would lead to important successes are being made by important manager unless someone has truly made it comes out and tells the story. Not many great achievers chose to tell their story, or if they do, it's not necessary movingly. Sir Alex Ferguson happens to be the most successful football manager over his 22 years with Manchester United does exaclty just that about the success story and its insights in his "Managing My Life".

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant Book
This is the best sports book I have read.It is a great insight into arguably the best manager ever in the history of soccer.I always respected Sir Alex Ferguson anyway, but after reading this book, I even have more respect for his tactics and especially his ethical approach to life in general.Whether you are a soccer coach yourself, just a sports fan, or a business manager looking for insight into how to manage people better you will enjoy this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST for all United fans!
Being a soccer fan of the club Manchester United for 15 years, this book is truly a revealing account inside the mind of one of the greatest soccer managers of British Football.

This autobiography shows how a seemingly ordinary man was able to achieve phenomenal success in his managerial career. Alex HATES to be on the losing side and this is a major motivation for him to achieve success constantly on the pitch and on his personal life.

I would love to recommend this book to all Manchester United fans as well as sports psychologists and people working in a competitive environment. To achieve success (in whatever field), one MUST have confidence in his/her own ability and take on the world like a soldier on the battlefield. People with low self-esteem should read this book to bring out their own competitive nature.

Finally, the statistics which show Alex Ferguson's playing and managerial record (at the end of the book) is indeed invaluable to the true soccer fan. This provides the "icing on the cake" for this honest work of brilliance by Ferguson. ... Read more

Product Description
The Brazilian football team is one of the modern wonders of the world. At its best it exudes a skill, flamboyance and romantic pull like nothing else on earth. Football is how the world sees Brazil and how Brazilians see themselves. The game symbolises racial harmony, flamboyance, youth, innovation and skill, and yet football is also a microcosm of Latin America's largest country and contains all of its contradictions. Travelling extensively from the Uruguayan border to the northeastern backlands, from the coastal cities of Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo to the Amazon jungle -Bellos shows how Brazil changed football and how football shaped Brazil. He tells the stories behind the great players, like Pele and Garrincha, between the great teams, like Corinthians and Vasco de Gama, and the great matches, as well as extraordinary stories from people and pitches all over this vast country. With an unerring eye for a good story and a marvellous ear for the voices of the people he meets, Alex Bellos describes the startling range of football spinoffs found in Brazil; from Autoball, literally football with cars and a giant leather ball to Ecoball, played in the heart of the rainforest, from Button football and its highly regulated procedures organised by fearsome Buttonistas to the truly alarming Footbull (yes with bulls). ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Source on Brazil
This book was beautifully written and would be excellent for anyone who wants to learn about Brazil, whether they like soccer or not.

5-0 out of 5 stars Review of Futbol Soccer: The Brazilian Way
This book contains loads of material including the history of soccer, style of soccer and players who influenced soccer in Brazil.I would highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars 'Joga Bonita' - and How it Came to Pass
What a wonderful work on one of the cultural foundations of Brasil.Along with Carnaval, the Catholic Church and the beach, soccer is a cultural touchstone in Brasil.

It's no wonder they've won 5 World Cups.On the beach, they enjoy playing two-man volleyball with only their feet! That takes some serious skill. And it's a wonder to behold.

Almost gave this a 4 star rating because it's not slickly produced as it would be if published here. But then, that's part of the charm of it.

Loved the many stories... the intense rivalry of the Rio teams, the Keepie-Uppie Girl and more...

If you love soccer, you'll love this book. It's a sociological study of a soccer-mad nation.A country which produces the 'selecao' every four years to charm the world when soccer takes center stage.

The Samba Boys play with such joy and flair that they're every soccer fan's second favorite team.Unless they're your first.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Brazil Book
This book gets at the marriage between Brazilian life and Brazilian football like no other. Great research, great interviews, great stories--all written with great intellect, love and humour.

My favourite chapters are the one that focuses on the origins of players nicknames, the story of the Big Kickabout and the beautiful one about the great Socrates.

You cannot call yourself a fan of Brazilian futebol and not read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Football and Society
As a self-confessed football fanatic (soccer for all you American and Australian readers), shamefully my knowledge of Brazilian football was rather lacking. Knowing that I would be spending eight months living in Rio, this past Christmas I went out and bought a copy of this book hoping to learn a little more about the game as it is played in Brazil. While the book did somewhat of a good job meeting my goals, this book is much more than just a guide to Brazilian football. Rather it is an in depth investigation into the strong role that football plays in Brazilian society.

The book of course has the pre-requisite chapters on the two Brazilian greats Pele and Garrincha, in addition to an investigation into Ronaldo and his fateful day during the 1998 World Cup Final in Paris. But the best chapters of the books are the ones that dig deeper into the sociological role that football plays in Brazilian life, from the rich and powerful, right down to the hardcore fans who live in the country's dangerous favelas (slums). Bellos obviously spent an enormous amount of time and money traveling this great country to get all kinds of different perspectives, and the novel is that much better for it. I suppose if I had something negative to say about this book it's that certain chapters (such as Frogs and Miracles) drag on a little too much for my liking. However, do not let this put you off for Futebol is truly worth reading.

Anyone with any interest in football needs to pick this book up to understand what it is that makes the Brazilian game so beautiful. Anyone who plans to live in Brazil, whether they like football or not, needs to read this book if only to understand why football plays such a strong role in the country's culture. While you don't have to adore football to enjoy your life in Brazil (I have met a fair few who wouldn't even give a football fan the time of day), you do need to understand its immense importance and Bellos does a great job of explaining it. ...
