Product Description
As one of the greatest, most celebrated athletes in history, Michael Jordan conquered professional basketball as no one had before. Powered by a potent mix of charisma, nearly superhuman abilities, and a ferocious need to dominate the game, he won six NBA championships with the Chicago Bulls and captured every basketball award and accolade conceivable before retiring and taking a top executive post with the Washington Wizards. But retirement didn't suit the man who was once king, and at the advanced age of thirty-eight Michael Jordan set out to reclaim the court that had been his dominion. When Nothing Else Matters is the definitive account of Jordan's equally spectacular and disastrous return to basketball. Washington Post writer Michael Leahy reveals the striking contrast between the public Jordan and the man whose personal style alienated teammates and the Washington owner who ousted him. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars don't read if you love Jordan.
This book will really kill your love for MJ, so if you idolize him, stay away! The author paints a picture of MJ as a bad teammate who tears down anyone who does not conform to his image of how a basketball team should be run. The author also made Jordan out to be a diva who could not adapt to a running playing style, forcing his teammates and coach to operate a slow offense suited to his needs rather than those of his team.

The author followed MJ (stalked him) for about two years to write this book, and Jordan did not cooperate with him. It is possible that the lens through which he views Jordan is biased. Whether this book is factual or not, don't read it if you are fond of MJ. If you like books that expose the flaws in athletes, then you will love this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars In these pages, come to know the real Michael Jordan
Published in 2004, author Michael Leahy shares his experiences during Michael Jordan's last comeback to the National Basketball Association.

Leahy's potrayal of Jordan showed a different side of the basketball legend which is not normally seen in the eyes of the public. Jordan, the "the most marketed player in the history of the NBA," was finally..."mortal" and did go through the same trials and tribulations (from a heightened perspective) that we all go through at some point in our lives. Leahy accounts the days wherein Jordan was at his best and would score 35 points over the span of several games to the days wherein he wasn't unstoppable and hit his career lows of 8 and 2 points respectively.

What stood out for me was Jordan's lambasting of players who didn't play up to his standards. Leahy quotes Jordan on numerous occasions wherein he would lambast teammates. Coach Fred "Tex" Winter, an assistant with the Los Angeles Lakers and former assistant coach with the Chicago Bulls summed it up best, "you either work hard or Michael has no use for you."

But the one paragraph in Leahy's entire book which rocked my very foundation of emulating Michael Jordan was the following:

"His people had held him up as a man to be emulated, making Jordan more than a half-billion in endorsement dollars in the process...he had raised the bar on his behavior during 17 years of unremitting self-promotion, in campaigns approved by the Jordan camp and coordinated by Nike and other corporate sponsors that elevated him from great athlete to hero and, finally, to moral symbol.

...when you present yourself as virtuous in years of ad campaigns and TV commercials, you will be fairly held in time to that standard. Fairly held because uou have sold your basketball shoes to people plunking down in excess of $100 not merely for a chance at better Ups but for a way to rub up against your aura, to feel a tiny sense of you in that admittedly silly way people feel when they wish to emulate anybody, to be inspired by your class and elegance, your morality and grace, as they've heard it told. And if some of that was artifice, then so, too, was everything you sold with your likeness on it."

Disturbing but quite true, personally, I have seen myself on many occasions wanting to "be like Mike." I've bought the shoes, worn the clothes, gotten the cards, read the books...and it is only now I realized. What about me? Leahy's book showed me that. In the years that I have been collecting "Jordan" in order to be inspired, all I needed to do in the end was look in the mirror in order to be inspired.

This is a great book that puts any not only Michael Jordan's life in perspective but also that of your own, especially if you are a Jordan fan who has collected his paraphernalia over the years.

2-0 out of 5 stars He's still the best there ever was....
Michael Leahy obviously likes to tear down icons. In doing so he comes over as petulant and singularly lacking in the understanding of what it takes fora Michael Jordan to be as successful as he was.

All of the NBA elite are tough in an over the top alpha male hyper competitive environment. If they are not, they quickly fall by the way side. Obviously the author failed to grasp this fact.

That Jordan wasn't a crack executive is neither here nor there. His single minded successful quest to be the best player ever, did not leave him much room to observe and learn board room politics.

If Mr. Leahy ecomes half the writer that MJ was as a player he would have world's of success and probably win a Pulitzer, however, he will more likely have a career mirroring a Brad Sellers, just not good in the clutch!

2-0 out of 5 stars Detailed but biased
Mr. Leahy is a very talented reporter, but his interesting, carefully collected raw material is poisoned by his obvious agenda, which is to make the case that Michael Jordan is a terribly flawed man who never truly deserved the admiration of his fans.By the end of the book, Mr. Leahy's perspective just seems childish. He is forever blaming others for telling part of the truth, but concealing the rest--yet that is precisely what he does throughout the book.Certainly, Jordan had his faults as a teammate and as an employee, but what about the admirable features of his "last comeback"?What other fading sports star tried to turn around a miserable franchise? What other fading sports star remained one of the best players in the world at 39 years old, even though his performance was limited by a serious knee injury? What other sports legend risked spoiling an absolutely PERFECT conclusion to a brilliant career just because he loved the game and wasn't ready to give it up forever?Jordan took on an extraordinary challenge and didn't succeed. That may seem pathetic and selfish to Mr. Leahy, but I don't see why readers should view Jordan's struggles as a Wizard in that way.

5-0 out of 5 stars Honest and Absorbing
The Michael Jordan story always seems to be told in extremes. Either he is heralded as an icon so mindlessly that the storytelling appears uninteresting or he is vilified, as previous writers knew the value of tearing down an icon.

When Nothing Else Matters is a portrait of a man that feels honest, Jordan is neither vilified nor overly praised; instead Micheal Leahy has given us a view of a man experiencing his only real failure in his career as a professional basketball player. A failure that is proven by the simple fact the Washington Wizards, with Jordan in a powerful position off, then on the court, never ascended the heights of the National Basketball Association's (NBA) Eastern Conference. It is a fascinating look at the world's most famous basketball player, during a time period where he seemed unable to transition his on the court reputation and success, to a career in management.

Jordan, the man, had grown comfortable being an icon and as his skills faded and his team missed the playoffs, Leahy reveals someone whose disconnect from the world around him made him unable to finesse his way to off the court success. Therefore his last games for the Wizards are revealed to have been one last chance to court the spotlight as a prime-time player, as the chances to move forward off the court didn't exist, Leahy lays out these realities, and Jordan's apparent blindness to them, that shows Jordan as a very accomplished yet out-of-the-loop figure who couldn't overcome his last challenge in the N.B.A. It also makes clear what Micheal Jordan was to the Washington Wizards management, a cash infusion.

Leahy's even handed treatment may prevent When Nothing Else Matters from being extreme in its presentation, but it doesn't prevent it from being an extreme success as it stands as a historical document for basketball fans to turn to when looking at a honest portrait of life in the N.B.A. ... With the possible exceptions of boxer Muhammad Ali and baseball player Babe Ruth, no athlete has made a greater impact on American society-or in the world-than Michael Jordan. Follow the life of one of the most recognizable athletes and living brands inside this engaging and balanced biography.

He is among the best-known and wealthiest athletes in the history of organized sports. With the possible exceptions of boxer Muhammad Ali and baseball player Babe Ruth, no athlete has made a greater impact on American society-or in the world-than Michael Jordan. Follow the life of one of the most recognizable athletes and living brands inside this engaging and balanced biography.

When basketball stars Larry Bird and Magic Johnson retired in the early 1990s, Michael almost single-handedly propelled the NBA to stratospheric levels of success and international visibility. As a player for the Chicago Bulls, he generated instant crowd thrills with his record-setting drives and dunks, selling countless books, newspapers, videotapes, NBA game tickets, and hours of television time. The NBA promoted Michael, basing its popularity on his image as the greatest showman in sports history. Yet his sports hero status extends beyond NBA records. Michael changed the game by becoming the most effectively marketed athlete of his generation.Nike and many other companies rode-and continue to ride-on the coattails of Air Jordan's legend.Author David Porter highlights Jordan's on and off the court accomplishments and examines his relationship with Chicago Bulls' coaches, his commercial endorsements, and his current role as part-owner of the Charlotte Bobcats. A chronology, photos, career stats, and a bibliography of print and electronic resources round out this biography of one of the most influential athletes of the twentieth century.

3-0 out of 5 stars a story
I have mixed feelings about Michael Jordan. On the one hand, he is a great athlete.I respect his work ethic. He has turned in a number of great performances and is no doubt one of the greatest to have ever played the game of basketball.

There is a flipside.Michael Jordan got allkinds of special treatment while he was in the NBA.He was the firstplayer I noticed who was granted all kinds of trips to the charity stripebecause of unbelievably, ticky tack calls. He scored at least ten points agame at the free throw line from bogus calls. It was great when there wasa picture session for 'greats of the game' with Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, and Michael Jordan.Magic told Larry not to stand too close to Michael orthey might call a foul.In front of reporters and television viewers, thatwas a classic comment by Magic.I believe Mike got 99% of all calls in hisfavor because he was such a cash cow for the NBA.Dominique Wilkins wasrobbed of a slam dunk championship when Mike scored a perfect 50 doing thesame dunk Dr. J did years before.I doubt Dr. J ever received a perfect 50for it.Dominique's dunk was much more impressive, and he received a 49.5. Please.Mike got in a fight with Reggie Miller, and only Miller gotsuspended at first.Only after there was an outcry did Mike get suspended. How are Mike's punches different?Mike elbowed Kevin Johnson to theground for all to see, and Kevin was called for blocking!

I am not tooimpressed that the bulls beat the lakers in the NBA finals.Magic wasdouble teamed every game every minute he was in.On top of that, JamesWorthy and Byron Scott were injured.Magic and Larry never won threechampionships in a row because the competition, teams, and players in the80s were much better than the nineties.Luc Longley, Will Perdue, BillCartwright, or Bill Wennington stopping Kareem?Ha!

Sport Magazinerecently had a piece on the ten greatest moments and ten greatest playersever in the NBA.Mike was ranked number one all time player.Kudos toMike for mentioning in 'For the love of the game' that to pick a"greatest ever" is impossible because of all the different erasand evolutions of basketball. The nineties bulls were given three of theten greatest moments in NBA history. This is just more Mike bias.Give mea break. There are hundreds of classic and amazing moments in NBA history. One of the moments picked was Mike beating the Jazz in the final minutesof his last game.He put his hand on Bryon Russel's backside and shovedhim out of the way. Then Mike made the game winnig shot. All eyes were onMike, but the ref did not make the obvious call.

There is also Mike'sarrogance.According to him, Wilt Chamberlain was a fluke eventhough Wiltwas a great all around player. He made a comment about Magic and Larryreaching a 'certain level of greatness' and that the two were not good ondefense. What? Are we talking about the same Larry Bird?Shaquille Onealis also much better and much improved than Mike gives him credit for.Shaqhas turned into a solid defender, passer, and he works hard at both ends ofthe floor.

Mike's corporate poster boy behavior is laughable. He didads for AT&T and then MCI.The Wayans family is also split between thetwo companies.Mike talked about the enviroment in Rayovac ads and thenpitches hot dogs?Mike is not the only athlete who will pitch anything andeverything to make millions.I wonder if Mike has checked into Nike'slabor practices.

Players like Mike and Charles Barkley soured me ontheNBA.Charles played like a thug and got away with it because he was astar.Plus, Charles insisted on wearing number 34 at Philadelphiaeventhough it was retired for NBA great Billy Cunningham. The startreatment and inflated egos has grown old, and that has turned a lot ofpeople off to sports.I miss the Lakers and Celtics match ups of the1980s.

1-0 out of 5 stars Michael Jordan was never my hero!
Michael Jordan never impressed me as a player! I personally think this book was self glorification! He may be the greatest , but not as a player in my book! I did like the pictures, and there were a lot of facts that I did not know about(like his contract with Nike shoes) but I feel like Iwasted my money on this book! I don't reccomend you buy it but then again,we all have different tastes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous!
This book is inspirational! You don't even have to know who MichaelJordan is to understand the message in this book:follow your dreams, nomatter what.Terrific!!!

Product Description
For 13 brilliant seasons Michael Jordan danced the dance of greatness across hardwood floors of basketball arenas from New York to Los Angeles to Barcelona and Paris. With a warrior's heart and an artist's grace, Jordan long ago transcended the sport to become one of the 20th century's global icons.

On the court, his almost mythic flair for the spectacular prompted former Los Angeles Laker superstar Magic Johnson to say simply, "There's Michael, then there's all the rest of us."

Off the court, Jordan's ability to alter markets and drive the business of his marketing partners is unprecedented.

Through it all, Jordan showed the world that greatness, true greatness, comes from the inside out. He remains perhaps the greatest practice player in the history of sports, his desire to improve upon his own example legendary. When critics questioned his all-around ability, he became the game's most dominant defensive player at his position. When teams decided to close down the lane and eliminate drives to the basket, he became a deadly jump shooter. Larry Bird and Magic Johnson had the most successfully teams of the 1980s but never won more than two consecutive championships. The Bulls won three straight--twice.

In For the Love of the Game, Jordan takes us through the wonder of his career on the court and away from the game. From the dream that preceded the game-winning shot against Georgetown in the 1982 NCAA Finals to the methodical dissection of the Utah Jazz prior to his game-winning shot in Game 6 of the 1998 Finals, Jordan pulls back the curtain on one of the most remarkable lives this century.Amazon.com Review
It's not easy imagining a volume capable of capturing thegrace, the joy, the flamboyance, and the wizardry of Michael Jordan, but this hybrid--melding autobiography, celebration, spectacularphotography, and cutting-edge graphics--comes awfully close. LikeJordan driving the lane, it's a thing of beauty; harder to analyzethan it is to admire, accept, gaze at, and enjoy.

As befits theultimate star in a game that has marketed itself with perfectrazzle-dazzle, For the Love of the Game is as visually brash asit is glitzy. In page after stunning page, Jordan traces his ascensionfrom college star to object of worldwide adoration. While most of thefocus is, of course, on the NBA, there are significant side trips intobaseball, the 1992 Olympic Dream Team, his advertising omnipresence, his family, and even his privacy. On the surface, the pictures--andtheir presentation--are more than enough to preserve and praise theJordan legend, but For the Love of the Game has somethingmore. It has Michael Jordan.

Jordan's text is everything theflashy images are not; it is straight, thoughtful, and revealing. Attimes, the relationship of word and image is breathtaking, especiallyon a particular pair of two-page layouts. In the first, Jordan asks,"When does jumping become flying?" His answer, framed by photos thatwould turn Superman green with envy, indicates that Jordan isgenuinely amazed by his own talents. The second is his reflection on"The Shot," his buzzer-beater over Cleveland's Craig Ehlo to win game5 in the 1989 playoffs. The story is told in 24 pictures taken overthe final three seconds. Below that is a chart of 25 of Jordan'sgame-winning shots. But it's this Jordan observation that pulls theimage and text together: "I never considered the negative consequenceof missing the last shot in a game." It's an attitude that defines theman, and For the Love of the Game reflects it with a stylishcombination of elegance, power, and beauty. (Want more Jordan? 5-0 out of 5 stars For The Love Of The Game : My Story
In the book For The Love Of The Game. One thing that I learned about this book is that you should never give up and always keep on trying. Even if you are not good at something at first then you should not give up and keep on trying untill you get good at the thing. And that you should not just stick with one thing but, try other things. You might be good at it. And that things just do not come to you, you have to work at it. That is what I learned about the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Stats and Pics
The book is full of great photos. I especially liked the one of Jordan and Dr. J! It also has great statistics from Michael Jordan's career. The layout is very different. I did not like it all that much. I was also a little disappointed that we did not really get to see more of the real Jordan. For a brief moment, we saw his humanity when he wrote about his father. Briefly, he mentioned his family. But mostly, he wrote about himself on the court. I guess I was hoping for more humility from this superstar. I believe he has it in him but the book doesn't show it. He certainly has much to brag about, but I thought he always let his bragging be seen through his play on the court.

4-0 out of 5 stars For the love of the game
The book I read was for the love of the game. It's about Michael Jordan and his life.I'd give it four stars because it explores through his basketball statistics to personal information. He talks about how he was drafted and how he almost didn't chose nike.It talks about all the inside information. It is one of the best autobiography's I've ever read.If you like basketball or a sport, you will reall like it.I learned a lot of stuff I'd probabaly would have never known. Some of the things I didn't know was that he played baseball. He also was number 45 in basketball for a year. His first Air Jordan was band from the league.I would recommend this book for people who like sports and biography's. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars 5 star book
If you are a Michael Jordan fan and love the game of basketball then this book is for you. This is probably one of the best books Matt Christopher has written. In his famous writing style he tells the story of Michael Jordan from "The Rack" to his third and final retirement. It is a fast paced, action-packed, and fact-filled book that you will not be able to putdown. It highlights information from when he was barely able to dribble the ball to many all-star appearances and many MVP'S. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who wants to read about a hard worker and the best basketball player of all time. The story of "His Airness" will not disappoint you.

4-0 out of 5 stars Michael Jordan
This book was an awesome book.It has a bunch of information aboutMichael Jordan throughout his whole life.It has information from when he was a young boy all the way into the NBA.I definitly recommend this book to anyone that has an interest in Michael Jordan or that is a fan of the NBA. This is a well written story that has great facts and stats of Michael Jordan.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
James and Deloris met in high school after attending a basketball game. They married on Feb. 17, 1963. Michael one of four children was born. The youngest son of theJordan household, baseball was Michaels favorite sport. One day his father put up two wooden backboards and baskets and gave the boys a basketball. They called it the Rack.Michael practiced often to try to keep up with his brothers. When in high school it was recommended he attend a basketball camp known as a Five
Star Camp. Education was always important to his parents, they knew that unless he was a good student all of his athletic talent would go to waste. In the fall of 1981 Michael enrolled in the University of North Carolina. After playing for three years there was little left for Michael to accomplish. He decided to turn pro and on June 19, 1984 he was picked by the Chicago Bulls. He made history and won championships for the Bulls and won consecutive MVP awards.

I liked this book very much. It is very hard to shorten in length the information this book has given me about the life of this great basketball star.

The saddest part of the book was when they talked about his father dying. From what the police could piece together James had apparantley pulled of the highway to take a nap and was attacked by two eighteen year old boys. They were later arrested and charged for the murder of James Jordan. Michael retired to spend more time with his family.

5-0 out of 5 stars 1st Jordan Book I read & loved it!
Michael Jordan is my favorite athlete! This is the first book I bought on him and I'm very happy. It's brief but there are huge pictured on every page taken by a photographer from Sports Illustrated. It's a quick read but more than enjoyable!Makes a nice addition for any fan!

3-0 out of 5 stars air

4-0 out of 5 stars Nicely done
This is an oversized book with excellent photography, especially given some of the tricky lighting involved.Jordan's comments are candid, although he did write that once he left the game of basketball, he wouldn't come back.Basketball fans can rejoice that in this estimate, Jordan was wrong.

5-0 out of 5 stars A in-depth look at the world's most recognizable athlete.
Michael Jordan -- the essence of Air.This book, a unique photgraphic autobiography, takes a very personal look at the superstar. Michael Jordan opens up and describes his life. The spectacular photograpghy and Michael's own thoghts (on both competition and life) compliment each other perfectly. The book is actually like the title says "Michael on Michael". Full-color photographs (more than 100 previously unpublished) and the clockwork of Michael's world providethe reader with a never-before-seen intimate view of the world's greatest athlete. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Demons will rattle your cage
Michael Jordan, the living sports icon and now that Tiger has been disgraced, the primary upholder of the Nike brand, is also profound living testament that even with modest talent, relentless determination is the only asset that can turn modest talent into world-class perfection. He is a man who has always lived (and pushed himself from) inside his own head. He understood at an early age and at a deep intuitive level that the war of success is an inner war, an intra-personal war, a war within ones self: Fear, doubt, insecurities, and limited abilities are the demons that rattled his cage and that will always rattle the cages in our own heads.

Michael listened to his demons (as we all must) but did the required work anyway, both mentally and physically, without cutting corners, and without whining or failing to realize that the world is not always fair. Then he bided his time and waited for the work to take care of the results. His skill, work ethic, personal style, competiveness and philosophy, like that of the great track star Michael Johnson, propelled him to higher and higher success on the basketball court and then in his life more generally.Johnson had a slightly different formula for slaying the dragon: He was more cerebral than Jordan. In addition to hard work, Johnson suggested that success requires a detailed plan to go along with consistent hard work. Johnson believes that a plan, ones own inner scorecard, is as important an element as hard work is in keeping the demons at bay.

Written three years after his final retirement, this is Michael Jordan's story, told very much in a philosophical and introspective tone and aimed primarily at those young inner city denizens, the court magicians of the ghetto, who might think that there are easy routes to self-affirmed glory that will propel them into the NBA on talent alone. Mike's message to them is not unlike the same message given by Johnson: It is to stop talking and dreaming and keep your head down and begin doing the hard work; for everything worth having involves hard work. There are no easy routes to a successful or to a fulfilling life, no matter what is the area of endeavor. There are no shortcuts. Sociology is as difficult as Physics; track and boxing are as difficult as basketball. The journey is the message and also curiously is the whole of the game. The gold (and the goal) are the gravy. One must love the journey to have (or love) the success. The gold (and the goal) are in the joy of seeing oneself grow and develop, and be seen improving oneself. Said differently, the pot of gold is not just to be found at the end of the rainbow. The upshot of the book is that in all but the most rare of instances, success is simply a byproduct of blood, sweat, tears and often a lot of disappointment. People are what they do, not what they talk about, or their unfulfilled daydreams. Everyone's cage will be rattled on the route so success.

There is a lot of meat here, and plus, it is beautifully written. Five stars

3-0 out of 5 stars Very interesting
Good book, nothing explosive or amazing but overall very interesting.

I would rank other books about/by Jordan as more informative and entertaining than this one, but would still recommend this for the right price.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
For the reviewer who stated that this is just one long, drawn-out ad for Brand Jordan - he is absolutely correct.

Jordan and Co. talk more about the creation of his shoes (and his clothing line) more than he does about what made him his fame and fortune in the first place - his sterling basketball career.

Without Jordan dominating on the court, and winning six NBA titles, these shoes would never be the big sellers that they are - thus not allowing Michael to justify speaking of the process of making them. Why would shoes from a sub-par player have much appeal?

Just as the title states - extremely disappointing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Insightful and inspirational
There are a lot of bits and pieces on MJ here from his input to the Air Jordan sneaker lines to his work ethic and attitudes toward a variety of challenges in life. His thoughts are laid out plainly as MJ himself. One might not be able to get to know a person through a book, but this is a pretty good attempt. Beautiful photography also comes with the book, and a nice pictorial archive of various aspects of MJ's life and brand.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
If you are looking for a book to learn something about MJ, this one is the right choice. ... Read more

I tell y'all what, this book ain't for MJ, it's for ev'ryone!

5-0 out of 5 stars It sould have won the Caldecot 2005 Award
Jump is a book about basketball superstar Michael Jordan, who struggled through life as a normal kid, to become one of today's most renowned basketball superstars. I would recommend this book to grades 3 thru 7 because of its simple but dramatic text and extraordinary charcoal illustrations, both created by Floyd Cooper. Cooper, who previously visited my school in fall 2004, tutored us about his style of art. Cooper exhibits a unique way of art, which he can do superbly. After he washes a piece of canvas, or cardboard in oil or charcoal, he erases his layer with a special kind of eraser to form lines that create a painting. This form of art requires a high-quality imagination and the skill to erase, creating a picture. The colors that he uses create a historical looking toned background, one many ages can enjoy. I highly recommend this book to young readers. This story concludes that seemingly regular children can make their dreams come true if they have a strong determination toward that goal, as Michael exemplifies in this story, anything is possible. Please enjoy! ... After following Jordan's every move for fifteen years, sports writer Mitchell Krugel gives us a fascinating, no-holds barred biography and explains why the man who left the game as the "Greatest Player of All Time" would risk his unparalleled status to play again. Meticulously researched, Krugel's book analyzes both the man and the legend to trace how the First Coming led to a Second and to a Third, and he chronicles the season that defines Michael Jordan as a man who will forever be playing for one last shot.

4-0 out of 5 stars GOOD BUT NOT GREAT
ONE LAST CHANCE IS ABOUT THE 3RD COMEBACK BY FORMER NBA GREAT MICHAEL JORDAN. AFTER BEING AWAY FROM THE GAME FOR 3 YEARS, JORDAN RETURNS AT AGE 38 TO TRY AND TAKE THE WIZARDS TO THE PLAYOFFS. MJ HAD ALOT OF RUST AND MILEAGE ON HIM AS HE TRYS TO BE THE MAN ON THE WIZARDS. SOME NIGHTS HE WAS, BUT MOST HE WAS MEDICORE OR LOUSY. MJ LET HIS SUPERSIZE EGO TELL HIM THAT HE WAS STILL GOOD ENOUGHT TO COMPETE AND PLAY MOST OF THE GAME NIGHT AFTER NIGHT. BUT AGE AND A BAD KNEE DID HIM IN. THERE IS SOME INTERESTING STORIES IN THIS BOOK AND I DID LIKE IT. I KNOW JORDAN IS THE BEST GUARD I HAVE SEEN. THIS BOOK MAKES HIM HUMAN, BUT WE DON'T REALLY KNOW MUCH ABOUT JORDAN THE PERSON IN THIS BOOK EXCEPT FOR HIS PASSION FOR BASKETBALL. IF YOU ALREADY KNOW ALOT ABOUT JORDAN'S PERSONAL LIFETHEN THIS IS A BOOK FOR YOU. THIS IS WHAT IT IS COVERING THE 2 YEARS HE TRIED A COMBACK.

3-0 out of 5 stars one last shot
This book One Last Shot was a good book.It wasn't the best book writen about Jordan but,it had its good points. The book I think tells it good detail most of the time. The book at points made me want to drop the book and stop reading because it didn't tell me anything I didn't know already. At other times it made me not want to put it down because it retells the games that went on.Overall this book ok not the best but it's a good book if you havn't already read a book and Jordan.

3-0 out of 5 stars I really did go to school with this guy.Really.
I was writing stories before MJ was shooting hoops. I was published before he warmed the bench at Laney High School. I've scored more rejection letters than he has points in a game, and in fact I got another one last week. MJ, my classmate, you in my house now!

What? He wasn't involved with this book? Damn.

I really don't have any interest in the NBA. I admire some of the players who've played over the years, I always enjoy reading a well-written bio about an interesting person, I marvel that we (myself included) idolize some celebs the way we do, I'll drop just about anything to watch an MJ highlight reel, and one reason I was cheering him on during his 21st century comeback was that we were both born in 1963.

So what about the book? Well, first I wanted to establish that I'm not a sports nut, unless we're talking about the NFL. That means that, if you don't care about the NBA either, my book review might be of interest. Now let's read.

Well, I read two of its thirteen chapters, 40 of its 300 pages. I guess you do have to be a basketball fan to enjoy it. Very knowledgeable author, but just not what I want to read. Oh well. I still love Michael.

1-0 out of 5 stars NOT GOOD AT ALL, no real inside sources, copy paste effort.
This book is just bad, little inside info on what was going on, bar a few quotes that are hardly "inside info". The book has little organization, going over the same things again and again, and worst of all, reads like a perpetual box score, which face it, you could have got yourself from a newspaper backlog.

This doesnt come close to "JORDAN RULES" by sam smith, which is a shame, as it could have given us a much more clear picture of the "3rd coming"

1-0 out of 5 stars Very very disappointing book
This book looks like the author took some newspaper and magazine clips from others and cobbled them together in a sloppily written book devoid of insight. He has nothing of value here. And it's particularly disappointing that he would try writing a book about Jordan's comeback in Washington when it's obvious he spent little time, if any, traveling with the team during Jordan's Washington days. This book reeks of a clip-and-paste job. Don't waste your money. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Michael Jordan's life lesson for all young athletes
Michael Jordan shows all young athletes how he prepared himself for both athletic greatness and life in general. The book is a very easy read for people at all ages and the lessons taken away from it will last a life time. This book was recommended for me to give to my sons by a scout of the Atlanta Braves almost 15 years ago.
And the lessons still fit. A highly encouraged reading for all young athletes making the commitment to be the best.

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy a few for the special folks in your life
I just grabbed this book for my 18 yr old son who is off to college.I didn't even read it, just knew he would browse it cause MJ wrote. Before I sent it off, I read it and WOW. Only 30 something pages and powerful. No nothing new, just straigt talk.I'm looking for a few more to send to the other special graduates in my life.I think it could change your life if you keep it simple and apply his example to life.If nothing else, it gives hope that hard work pays off.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good but not excelent!!
This is a good book. It goes straight to the point... good motivational thoughts! However, it is so short (36 half pages) that it seems rather a short essay than a book. I would have wanted to see some more anedoctes and more biography from Michael Jordan's life.
Overall, a good book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The essence of a winner...
The most amazing thing about this book is it's simplicity. What's new in the book? nothing, but it's the pairing of Jordan, the icon, with simple core value that makes it a wonderful read.

Jordan's message is very simple, follow your heart and will add strong values and you can accomplish any goal in life.

This is a book to be kept handy at all times...

3-0 out of 5 stars And the secret of success is...
...that there is no secret. Michael Jordan is probably the greatest basketball player of all time, so when such an accomplished man speaks on the achievement of excellence, it is worth the effort to pay attention. In a short 36-page read, Jordan gives advice that resonates far beyond sports, and applies just the same to academic, business and personal areas of life.

Discipline, foresight and sacrifice make up Jordan's own triangle offense against the obstacles one meets on the road to excellence. I was glad to see he made the observation that people in this country only see the end result - the final payoff - completely ignoring the backbreaking work it took to reach that end. You see it everyday - an honest effort done in by a lack of foresight and pie-in-the-sky goals. People want the payoff without putting down the deposit, and as a result a lot of potential is nipped in the bud. Hard work alone does not guarantee, but in the end that is all you can do. Excellence, then, is not a goal, but a process.

Homer wrote 'The Iliad' thousands of years ago, but there is a line within that still holds true today, and particularly here. A young hero there muses that of all qualities in a person - bravery, wisdom, God-given strength - nothing matters so much as heart. Jordan echoes that sentiment - talent alone will not do the trick, and his achievements confirm he was right. Heart measures the gap between the hall-of-famer and the might-have-been. ... Read more

Product Description
Walter LaFeber's timely analysis looks at the ways that triumphant capitalism, coupled with high-tech telecommunications, is conquering the nations of the world, one mind—one pair of feet—at a time.

With Michael Jordan and the New Global Capitalism, Walter LaFeber has written a biography, a social history, and a far-ranging economic critique. From basketball prodigy to international phenomenon to seductive commercial ideal, Michael Jordan is the supreme example of how American corporations have used technology in a brave, massively wired new world to sell their products in every corner of the globe. LaFeber's examination of Nike and its particular dominion over the global marketplace is often scathing, while his fascinating mini-biography of Michael Jordan and the commercial history of basketball reveal much about American society.

For this new paperback edition, LaFeber has added a chapter on globalization in a changed world, after mass protests and since September 11.Amazon.com Review
Not everyone embraces the "American Way." But as historianWalter LaFeber demonstrates in this highly original look at theeffects of global capitalism, not everyone has a choice. Usingpowerful communications satellites in the 1980s and, later, unbridledcapital, transnational corporations such as McDonald's and Nike andtheir media-mogul counterparts have infiltrated cultures from Paris toBeijing, understanding perfectly that what the world sees the worldbuys (in this case, Big Macs and anything plastered with a Nikeswoosh). Of course, it helps when hoops legend Michael Jordan--theworld's most idolized athlete--is pitching your products. Hisinfluence is pervasive: "McDonald's, blaring Michael Jordan'sendorsement, operated in 103 nations and fed one percent of theworld's population each day. 'Within the East Asian urbanenvironment,' one historian of the firm notes, 'McDonald's fills aniche once occupied by the teahouse, the neighborhood shop, thestreet-side stall, and the park bench.'"

LaFeber transitions smoothly from Michael Jordan biography tosocioeconomic commentary, first exploring Jordan as the great Americanhero, then turning a critical eye on Nike and its shoddy overseaslabor practices. Jordan can certainly sell shoes, but at what cost? Inthe final chapter heading, LaFeber asks whether Michael Jordan is the"Greatest Endorser of the Twentieth Century" or "An Insidious Form ofImperialism." He presents evidence of both, but ultimately The NewGlobal Capitalism becomes less about Jordan's marketing prowessthan America's influence over the world's consumer habits, and, subsequently, the havoc that power can wreak. LaFeber's short (164pages), lucid study gives readers a fresh perspective on the battlebetween capital and culture. Recommended. --Rob McDonald ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice shoes!
Despite some rather glaring typos, this is a fascinating read. I never cared about basketball until reading this book. Very interesting insights into Nike, Turner, Jordan, and 9/11.

5-0 out of 5 stars Capital vs Culture
LaFeber was well-known and loved by his students at Cornell as a spell binding lecturer and is widely respected as an expert on the history U.S foreign relations. So at first I wondered what about Michael Jordan could possibly interest a distinguished and conscientious scholar of American history, someone not normally associated with forays into pop culture. But it's a really fascinating, thoughtful, and surprising essay.LaFeber argues that Jordan is even bigger than we think--not as a sports icon but as both a symptom and cause of revolutionary change in the global order of things.Yes, the world changed with the fall of the Berlin Wall and with the end of the cold war, he says, but the rise of Jordan is an even bigger watershed moment in world history. The real kicker comes late in the book and is somewhat understated--that there is a war between culture and capital and capital is winning. The implications of this idea are enormous and mostly frightening. This is the maelstrom Marshall McLuhan was trying to warn us about. For anyone interested in media studies, cultural criticism, or a scholarly historian's perspective on global capitalism, this book will be eye-opening and mind-expanding. And the bits about Jordan himself are pretty fascinating.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for all world citizens
Just a short note to say that this is one of the most important books I have read in the past 10 years. It tackles capitalism, race, & the role of the individual in the global context in an engaging yet very well informed manner. As a History professor, I have tought this book at several major universities and it has always met with much approval from my students.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply Wonderful book. Definitely recommend it.
This book was absolutely riveting. Provides in-depth information about anything to do with Michael Jordan and basketball in terms of its relations to the world. You will not have any questions when done reading. Gives a whole new perspective on the marketing of the NBA and how things work and evolve. The author shows how one person can affect millions, even billions of people. It allows us a glimpse of how something small can be so big at the same time.

4-0 out of 5 stars There Is More To Michael Jordan Then Playing Basketball...
In Michael Jordan And The New Global Capitalism, Walter LaFaber uses his ability to research and write about something to express to the readers how important advertising is to any corporation or business. For the Nike Corporation, they partnered up with Michael Jordan and worked out a plan to advertise him and their products through worldwide telecommunications. When Michael Jordan won (which was something he did a lot), the Nike Corporation won too, because everyone wanted to be "like Mike," and the only way to be "like Mike" was to buy his footwear and apparel or other Nike footwear and apparel. This book is a good awakening to anyone interested in how our economy works for big businesses, and its also a good book for anyone interested in basketball and or Michael Jordan. This is a definite must read all in all, because even if you end up not liking this book, you will be better off having read it. ... "The Chicago Bulls," the announcer called out, "pick Michael Jordan of the University of North Carolina."Michael Jordan was born in a Brooklyn hospital on February 17, 1963.He then went to Laney High School, a school where his number and jersey would be retired. After high school, Jordan went to the University of North Carolina where he became the big man on campus after winning the college a NCAA championship in 1977.As a junior at UNC, Michael Jordan entered the NBA draft and was drafted to the Chicago Bulls. In the NBA, Jordan would be known as the leagues leading scorer and take his team to win many NBA championships. In 1999, Michael Jordan retired and would be known as a life long legend.I recommend that everyone who is familiar with Michael Jordan and the game of basketball read this book.
One reason why I recommend this book to people is because it gives you outstanding quotes that make you feel as though you were right there when something was said. For example, "I wasn't guarding him," Dennis Johnson said after the game. "No one was guarding him. No one can guard him."Also, "You could tell something magical was happening," said Michael's teammate, Orlando Woolridge.""He was incredible."In addition, "Mr. Jordan," the boy's father said."Can I take a picture of you with my son?"With these quotes, you could imagine yourself being there right when it was said.
Another reason why I thought this book was fantastic is because it was very specific and used a variety of descriptive words. For instance, Michael hated losing, it was small consolation that he was named the top vote-getter in the balloting for the All-Star team with more than one million votes.Like the sentence, Michael was in great shape despite the fact that in the early part of his career was filled with fast-foods favorites like hamburgers and fried chicken.Last, Their opponent was the Georgetown Hoyas, a formidable team whose freshman center was future New York Knicks' star Patrick Ewing.Having good descriptive sentences help you to get a better understanding of the novel that you are reading.
The final reason why I believe that this book is wonderful is because it gives interesting facts about Michael Jordan. For example, Micheal Jordan chose the number twenty- three because he wanted to be half as good as his brother and his brother's number was forty-five.Also, he was intentionally fouled by many players who actually wanted to injure him.Last, Jordan was going to go to UVA and UCLA, but never got a response and decided to go play for Coach Dean Smith. After reading this book, I learned so much new information about the life of Michael Jordan.
I recommend that everyone read this book because it gives interesting facts, is very specific and used a variety of descriptive words, and gives outstanding quotes. If you read this book you could find out even more of Michael Jordan's thoughts and secrets. If you are familiar with the game of basketball and Michael Jordan, then you should read this book.

This book of Michael Jordan's life was a great. I tells how he got to be who he is today. Michael didn't havethat hard of a life when he was yuonger but when he went into high school at Laney a little high school in Wilmington he had problems because kids would make fun of his bald head and his big ears when he was around girls he liked. Then Michael starsted to jip class to practice on his basketball skills and that really effected his grades. Now its Michael's senior year and he doesn't think that any college recruits will look at him. But one coach gave him a chance to take a tour of the schooland see if Michael liked it. That coaches name was Dean Smith who was the basketball coach of the North Carolina Tarheels.Michael left from North Carolina in his junior year and entered the NBA draft and was drafted by the Chicago Bulls inthe 1st round and he was the 3rd pick overall. Michael Lead the the Bulls to 6 NBA titles later in his career and then retired after his 6th title.

I think that who ever reads this book will have a good time because it tells you how Michael Jordan grew up to become who he is today. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars both sides

5-0 out of 5 stars this is a great book for basketball fans
there are all sorts of neat features in this book. What I especially liked were the box scores, where you can see Jordan's changing cast and how it evolved. I don't agree with every ranking, but he's got good reasons forhis choices. There's even a practice listed, which I thought was reallyinteresting.

5-0 out of 5 stars The author steps up and drains a trey!
Everybody has a favorite Michael story; it was a smart move for this writer to hash out an objective way--a formula that makes sense-- to rate stellar MJ performances on the court. In the same way that video storescarry Roger Ebert's movie/video book at the checkout counter, sports barsshould stock Condor's book--right behind the Jagermeister and shotglasses--to settle countless Jordan debates that are sure to rage in yearsto come....

5-0 out of 5 stars Bob Condor picks em...
Condor has some interesting choices...and he has a formula behind his picks... from his number 1 choice, to his 50th...we see a man depecting another man...and both of them know their game...although...i think thethird game of the final series with the lakers should have been in theresomewhere...but, thats just me ...
