Product Description

Lucille O'Neal shares her public battles and personal struggles as a young, single mother of NBA legend Shaquille O'Neal.

Lucille O'Neal would one day have it all, but not before fighting the public battles and personal demons that would threaten to shatter the very foundation of her life while taking their devastating toll along the way.

Over the past 16 years, Lucille O'Neal has become one of the best-known mothers of a celebrity athlete. But behind the scenes, the mother of four has her own story, at once heartbreakingly familiar in its pain and yet wonderfully inspirational in its outcome.

In this memoir, O'Neal candidly describes the pain of being an outcast and the stigma of becoming an unwed, teenage mother. Most interestingly, she candidly shares another side of fame and fortune-a side rarely revealed or admitted in public: her unexpected feelings of anger and resentment towards her son's blinding success.

5-0 out of 5 stars amazing book~!
This is a review on the book, "Walk like you have somewhere to go."It is a great book that I would recommendment to people of all age groups to read.Especially to those who feel like they are going through alot of hardships in life. It's full of encouraging stories from Lucille O'Neal, the famous NBA basketball player Shaquille O'Neal's mother. It go back to when she was a rebellious teenager, to being a single mother, a wife, a college student, a divorcee and above all a conquerer!I love how this book makes me laugh and sometimes makes me cry.As I was reading, I found that I can't put it down. She shares with us her struggles and disappointments along with her sweetest memories and proudest accomplishment. She's a very humble person. From this book I was able to see how God could amazingly use the suffering in our lives to bless us and how we has a plan for us, all of us.The most important thing, I learned from this book is how enduring suffering has the power and ability to makes us stronger, better, more Godly people. If you stop by a book store, check it out!It will encourage and empower your life as it has did in mine.

4-0 out of 5 stars Walk Like You Have Somewhere To Go
Shaquille O'Neal's mom is the writer of this book and she does a great job.
There are 33 interesting chapters in this book.
She has had a very hard upbringing and talks about it a lot throughout the book.
Her famous son is mentioned throughout as well.
We get a clear sense of what life was like for her and for her son and how they've adapted to their new found fame and fortune over the years.

It was an interesting read and if you are into stories about overcoming hardships and happy endings then this book might be of interest to you.

I enjoyed it thoroughly. Give it a chance.

4-0 out of 5 stars Courageous Life Story
Most of us are familiar with basketball superstar, Shaquille O'Neal, but this time it's his courageous mother, Lucille O'Neal, who tells her life story.Mrs. O'Neal introduces you to herself as a young girl being raised by her grandparents who goes from "good girl" to rebellious teenager and then becomes a single parent early in life. She candidly shares her journey out of "mental welfare" to "mental health" throughout her adult years and shows us that it's never too late to gain self-confidence and pursue your dreams.Walk Like You Have Somewhere to Go is an easy to read biography that encourages readers to be the best person they can be, despite whatever circumstances you might find yourself in.Mrs. O'Neal effortlessly shares her faith, almost as if she is just talking to you as a friend. The book is a worthwhile read that will give you a newfound respect for the O'Neal family...and for yourself as well.

4-0 out of 5 stars Here's a story that women in my generation know all too well
Here's a story that many women in my generation know all too well. Lucille O'Neal may have a famous son and may live the life that one can only imagine. Yet where she started is all too real and less than glamorous.Pregnant at 15 for an older man, living with her grandparents, having a strained almost non-existent relationship with her mother, being in an equally strained and emotionally taxing marriage; all of the above are recipes for a mentally unhealthy woman. Yet never once do you sense defeat in this book. Lucille preaches the power of God and finding solace in him and that gives her the strength to persevere.

Some of the main themes that presented itself were that of Family Relationships, especially traditional ones and Religion. I grew up under the guidance of my grandparents as well and their values are the ones that I hold close to me even to this day. All grandparents are strict, even mine, and so I connected to the pain that Lucille felt when she just simply could not express herself around them. Her grandparents were also religious and she credits them for bringing her to the Lord in this first instance. Here I saw the marriage of both themes; religion and family relationships at play.

Was there any doubt that I would chose Lucille as my favourite character!? She trusted and believed in God and even in the face of adversity she stuck by her beliefs.I loved Shaquille too, because he too defied all the odds and saw his dream to fruition. He made her proud in the same vain my children do everyday and when I read those corresponding chapters I could not help but smile to myself. However I could hardly say the same for Lucille's grandparents. They never took the time to explain the strained relationship with her mother or why she and her brother were taken away from her mother. At the same time, in their rigid household, Lucille was never able to express herself.

Though she did not go into much detail about her feelings towards her marriage and her grandparents, there is very little that I would change in this book. I loved the story and really connected to Lucille's plight of becoming a mentally strong woman. Walk Like you Have Somewhere To Go is raw and soul searching and for the first time, Lucille is telling her side of the story. Her accomplishments in the end all seemed like the icing on a beautifully made cake.

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting Book...Practical Advice
This book was filled with practical advice about life, family, love, motherhood, and the importance of a relationship with God. Lucille O'Neal provided a relatively unobstructed look at her life experiences and shared her wisdom acquired from the school of hardknocks. Her book is filled with practical, easy-to-understand advice that any person, but especially women, can apply to their own life situations. I found this book to be an easy read, that held my interest and seemingly made me want to know more about the writer. The emphasis on God's ever-present love and what clearly became her realization that education was the key to taking control of her life added a refreshing perspective. Additionally, the author consistently emphasized the importance of family and a firm foundation of love throughout the book. The title caught my attention right from the start because it seemed to imply that one's life should be approached with a sense of urgency. I enjoyed reading this book because it was generally well-written and provided an opportunity to see the essence of the soul of the author. Thank you, Lucille O'Neal for sharing a portion of your life in words.I received this book free from BookSneeze to read and review. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars SHAQ SPEAKS
THIS IS A BOOK BY SHAQUILLE O'NEAL CENTER FOR THE LOS ANGELES LAKERS. HE TELLS US SOME OF HIS LIFE AND CAREER IN THE NBA. MOST OF THE BOOK CONCERNS WINNING HIS FIRST CHAMPIONSHIP IN THE NBA. HE TOUCHES ON HIS TEAMATES, COACHES AND LIFE IN GENERAL IN THE NBA. I LIKED THIS BOOK AND I LIKE SHAQ, EVEN THOUGH HE IS A BIT FULL OF HIMSELF. HE ENJOYS LIFE AND IS VERY HUMAN. I RECOMMEND THIS BOOK TO LAKER AND BASKETBALL FANS.

5-0 out of 5 stars In his own words--pretty authentic stuff
From all of his interviews and press conferences, I know that he wrote this book and there were very few, if any, editors to "re-write" his book like most athlete autobiographies. This one might not have every sentence punctuated correctly, but he does a great job as a whole.Where else can you get something like this--a diary, essentially--from the store.

3-0 out of 5 stars The Shaq attack now in Miami...he's changed.
I do agree that some sections he repeats himself, and caught myself wondering if I had read that section already. I do like his conversational approach though as it seems like he's just talking right to you.Nowhere does it mention in the 'laws of book etiquette' that you have to be a prolific writer to release a book.

I've read the whole book and thoroughly enjoyed it and how it gave the readers an insight on how Shaq views the NBA, how the underachieving pre-Jackson Lakers REALLY were, and most rewarding, his upbringing and how his parents raised him.

Don't expect the same Shaq in this book than what he portrays now. As he's contradicted himself a bit in light of recent events regarding his trade to Miami. Nevertheless, I do recommend this book as a casual and humorous read.
- Laker fan for life, thanks Shaq for your dominance

2-0 out of 5 stars what a big joke!!!!!!!!!!!
this book is complete garbage....it has no moral or purpose just a bunch of bragging(ALTHOUGH IM A BIG LAKER FAN!)

5-0 out of 5 stars Shaq Talks Tough
'Shaq Talks Back: The Uncensored Word on My Life and Winning in the NBA' is a giant of a book written by a sporting superstar.Shaquille O'Neal shoots clean baskets from every part of the literary court, delighting and dazzling the reader with his unique writing style. He has as much facility with language as he does with the ball, and his words bounce off the page with effortless grace.

There are many memorable encounters played and replayed throughout the text, but for me, the one that best epitomizes Shaq's sporting philosophy is seen on pages 68-81. It relates to the famous 'International Incident of 1996', and O'Neal is candid about his pivotal role:

'I first saw him in Europe and I'll never forget his name; Teodor Dobrowski. He played center for the Warsaw Warriors and he was a giant. Great skills. Hands the size of frisbees. By all reports a standup guy. So when he told me he wanted to settle in America, I arranged for him to try out for the Lakers. Even let him stay at my place. Eat my food. Drink my beer. Date my girl. He wanted to show his gratitude so he offered to sell me his family castle in Krakow for only $7000. I gave him cash. Big mistake. There was no castle. Not even a family. The bum scammed me. So I stuck him on an ageing Aeroflot and wished him luck. All of it bad. End of story. And he got those cuts and bruises when he fell out of the cab on the way to the airport. Honest. If I'd known that diplomats would later be recalled, two embassies closed, the Secretary of State ordered back to Washington and the UN General Assembly reconvened, I might have actually paid the cabfare before running away at the terminal. Do I regret sending the grifter back to Warsaw? Never. If there's one thing I can't stand, it's being touched by a 10-foot Pole.'

When 'Shaq Talks Back', you'd better listen. Better still, read this wonderful book. ... Read more

I hope He can bring a Championship to Miami.no matter what Shaq is the Baddest Cat on the Basketball Court.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a gem
I first read this book when I was eleven years old. I read it twice that year, and I'd sometimes read passages from it to pump myself up before a basketball game. Living in Australia, and without the Internet, I didn't know much about the NBA, but this book taught me a great deal.
I'm re-reading it now, and I'm surprised at how much I am enjoying it. Shaq has come a long way since then, and reading his comments on how he saw things when he first came in is interesting and illumining. The tone is relaxed and chatty, and there are plenty of funny and insightful anecdotes. This book is a gem, and at less than a dollar (second-hand), it's a must read for any basketball fan. ...
