In 196364 the Knicks brought up the rear of the Eastern Division with a 2258 record. At Grambling, where he played college basketball, Reed amassed 2,280 career points, averaged 26.6 points and 21.3 rebounds during his senior year, and led the school to one NAIA title and three Southwestern Athletic Conference Championships. He was eventually drafted 10th overall by the Knicks in 1964, where he quickly established himself as a fierce, dominating and physical force on both ends of the floor. Willis is a member of Phi Beta Sigma fraternity, inc. Reed made an immediate impact with the Knicks. In March 1965 he scored 46 points against the Los Angeles Lakers, the second highest single-game total ever by a Knicks rookie. For the season, he ranked seventh in the NBA in scoring (19.5 points per game) and fifth in rebounding (14.7 rebounds per game). He also began his string of All-Star appearances and was named the NBA Rookie of the Year. Reed proved to be a clutch playoff performer throughout his career. He gave an early indication of this in 196667 when he bettered his regular-season average of 20.9 points per game by scoring 27.5 points per contest in the postseason. 1-0 out of 5 stars Revisionist Basketball History, Nice Color Photos
This book has some very nice pictures, colorful ones from the 1970's and the ABA (defunct American Basketball Association). That is where any praise for this work will end.The rankings of the top five centers or so Jabbar, Russell, Chamberlain (not necessarily in this order) are reasonable. There are however, some signficant misteps that would call into question this author's familiarity with the history of pro basketball over the past 35 years. For example, Artis Gilmore is rated at the bottom of the 25 featured pivotmen.Bill Lambier, Bill Walton, and others are ranked above Gilmore.OK, charitably this could called a subjective "eye of the beholder" matter. But he also characterizes Gilmore as an outside shooting threat from 16 feet and beyond and weak on defense besides blocked shots. These inaccuracies call into question any type of credibility the author would have.I fear that it is this type of inaccurate, revisionist history that could be keeping Artis Gilmore out of the Basketball Hall of Fame.Gilmore is the game's all time most successful field goal shooter, top 25 in scoring, top 10 rebounds, blocked shots, games and minutes played. The author should devote some text to the farce of Gilmore's absence from Springfield. ... Chapters: Larry Brown, John Calipari, Willis Reed, Byron Scott, Stan Albeck, Lawrence Frank, Bill Fitch, Butch Beard. Excerpt:William Fitch (born May 19, 1934 in Davenport, Iowa ) is an American former National Basketball Association (NBA) coach who has been successful in making teams playoff contenders throughout his coaching career. Before entering the professional ranks he coached college ball at the University of Minnesota , Bowling Green State University , the University of North Dakota , and his alma mater, Coe College . Fitch's teams twice qualified for the NCAA tournament. Fitch was a U.S. Marine Corps drill instructor , a fact that Larry Bird credited in his book Drive: The Story of My Life as an important reason for Bird's own strong work ethic. During his 25-year pro coaching career Fitch repeatedly was hired in an attempt to improve failing teams. As of 2004 Fitch ranked fifth among all NBA coaches in all-time number of victories (with 944) but also ranked second in all-time losses (with 1,106) behind Lenny Wilkens . He was awarded as the NBA's Coach of the Year Award twice and he guided Bird, Kevin McHale , Robert Parish and the rest of the Boston Celtics to the 1981 NBA championship, defeating the Houston Rockets 4 games to 2 in the finals. From Boston, Fitch went on to coach the Rockets where he led a team featuring Hakeem Olajuwon and Ralph Sampson to the 1986 NBA Finals where they were defeated once again by Bird's Celtics, 4 games to 2, for the NBA championship. Fitch also coached the Cleveland Cavaliers , New Jersey Nets and Los Angeles Clippers . During his first year with the Cavaliers, the team lost its first 15 games.
