Excerpt: Deep Blue versus Garry Kasparov was a pair of famous six-game Human-computer chess matches played between the IBM supercomputer Deep Blue and the World Chess Champion Garry Kasparov. The first match was played in February 1996 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Kasparov won the match 42, losing one game, drawing in two and winning three. A rematch, which has been called "the most spectacular chess event in history", was played in 1997 this time Deep Blue won 3½2½. Here are the result summaries of the matches. The winner is denoted with bold text, in addition to the 10 format result. The first game of the 1996 match was the first game to be won by a chess-playing computer against a reigning world champion under normal chess tournament conditions, and in particular, normal time controls. The game was played on February 10, 1996. The second game began with the Open Catalan Opening. Kasparov played in what could be called a preemptive style blocking all Deep Blue's development tries. The game lasted for 73 moves but eventually Deep Blue's operator had to resign the game for the computer in a position where both players had a bishop but Kasparov had three pawns against Deep Blue's one. The game was played on February 11, 1996. In the third game Kasparov played the Sicilian Defence to which Deep Blue responded with the Alapin Variation. The game lasted for 39 moves and was drawn. The game was played on February 13, 1996. The fourth game was the second game to end in a draw, even though at one point Deep Blue's team refused Kasparov's draw offer. The opening played was the Semi-Slav Defense. The game was played on February 14, 1996. The fifth game was the turning point in the match. During the game, Kasparov, playing black, chose a different opening, ... More: http://booksllc.net/?id=10713426 ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Nothing Really Groundbreaking
Garry Kasparov is truly a very interesting person, a chess genius, a businessman, and a politician.Unfortunately, the book's lessons appear somewhat forced and disjointed, the stories are a little hard to follow, and his principles are nothing new - same stuff, different author.I didn't find any grand inspiration, insight or earth shattering revelations here.Just OK. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This is a tremendous book
No, I'm not paying 70 bucks for this. As another reviewer mentioned, 70 bucks buys a lot of chess. 70 bucks would pretty much cover the cost of the three-volume set of Botvinnik's Best Games, which are annotated with Botvinnik's excellent and thoughtful analysis. This particular book is great, but somebody needs to produce a knock-off edition, because it's inexcusable to have this out of print. The Best Move, by Hort and Jansa, is another fabulous book that is out of print because the publisher went under but won't release copyrights to another publisher. It's incredibly irritating.

1-0 out of 5 stars save your money
for the price of this book you could get 10 other better books
and as for the other reviewer that said Karpov was dull... you sir are and idiot and you can only hope to be able to one day understand Karpovs games

5-0 out of 5 stars Find this book and buy it!
When a great World Champion writes about his own games, read what he has to say! In the tradition of Fischer's My Sixty Memorable Games, Botvinnik's 100 Selected Games, Tal's The Life and Times of Mikhail Tal, and Alekhine's Best Games, The Test of Time gives one great insight into chess at the very highest levels. Unlike a lot of Garry's later work where he writes as though he doesn't want to give anything away to prospective opponents, this book is written as if his very life depended upon every word. The games are given with contemporary annotations and in many cases Kasparov revised them as he prepared the book for publication. The book covers the period from the mid-seventies when Garry was a teenage master through the candidates matches which led up to the first WC match with Karpov. There are a few games here that are worth the price of the book alone -- check out Kasparov - Portisch where Garry sacs two bishops and drives the Black Queen all over the board and e! ventually to checkmate. Unlike the books cited above, The Test of Time has not yet received its due, but surely will take its place among the classics. ... Read more
