Product Description

Gretzkys Game is the story of Ryan, a young boy who loves to play hockey but whose small stature makes him a target for the bigger boys. He’s determined to make the team, even if it means a huge amount of extra practice before the tryout. His dad encourages him to use his speed and intelligence, reminding him that Edmonton Oilers superstar Wayne Gretzky makes up for his lack of size with swiftness and hockey savvy. Can Ryan’s hero inspire him to succeed? Hockey’s golden age is vividly recalled in this exciting tale of hard work, determination, and holding onto one’s dreams.

One of this century's greatest athletes, Wayne Gretzky,The Great One, never failed to enthrall hockey fans with hisincredible talent and skill.

It was with bittersweet sadness that the hockey world accepted theretirement of its most beloved player after the 1998-99 season.Forthe past twenty years, Wayne Gretzky above all has epitomized thetoughness, power, and excitement of hockey. Including more than 120 extraordinary black and white and colorphotographs, The Great One celebrates Gretzky, from his earlydays as Brantford, Ontario's whiz kid, all the way to his Stanley Cupglories. The Great One includes a compilation of numberninety-nine's records of achievement and game-by-game statistics forhis two decades of excellence.

Expertly written and researched by hockey historian Andrew Podnieks, the book also includes rare interviews, anecdotes, and little-knownfacts about Gretzky.

With Wayne Gretzky's retirement, hockey fans everyone mourned thepassing of an era.But Gretzky's words and achievements live on inThe Great One.There is no better way to remember the career ofhockey's most superb and charismatic player.

4-0 out of 5 stars One of many, but definitely a great one
There are a lot of books about Wayne Gretzky. This is a good one with a lot of nice pictures. All the highlights are included, but if you're a Gretzky fan you won't be surprised by any real new items.

3-0 out of 5 stars [Out of Four stars] Wayne accomplished more than Andrew expresses but still a good read on the 'Great One'
Wayne Gretzky obviously is the greatest Hockey
player ever (and Mike Modano is the best we
Amre-I-cans have produced, so far). Though
this book is more show than tell, it still
is a worthy tribute to Gretz. There are others
better though.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not this time Wayne
I admire everything about Wayne Gretzky and everything he has done. But i also think Andrew did a poor job reflecting how much wayne gretzky has really accomplished. He is not just a great player , he is a great person. The book lacked certain detail and as the other reviewer said. It probably is only meant for a 3rd grade level =)

5-0 out of 5 stars The Great One: Life and Times of Wayne Gretzky
I bought this book for my 3rd grade son to write a paper with, and found myself completly engaged in it. For someone who didn't know much about "The Great One", I am now as big a fan as my son! Tells a lotabout his younger years and doesn't just focus on the goals. AWESOME ... Read more

Product Description
Ranked with basketball's Michael Jordan and soccer's Pele, hockey's Wayne Gretzky retired from the NHL in April 1999. The center who played with the New York Rangers, St. Louis Blues, Los Angeles Kings, and Edmonton Oilers left the game with 2,857 points, 894 goals, and 1,963 assists. 99: My Life in Pictures traces the Great One's career from playing in his father's backyard rink in Brantford, Ontario, through his unprecedented 21-year pro career during which he rewrote the NHL record book - breaking 61 NHL records, leading Canada in international competition, and captaining the Oilers to four Stanley Cup titles. With insightful essays and more than 250 images, 99 deserves a place on every sports fan's shelf.Amazon.com Review
If the child is truly father to the man, it's hard to miss the man The Great One would become in his boyhood pictures on the ice; the features mature, but the exuberance and determination they express never waver. Hockey fans of all allegiances--and, of course, Wayne Gretzky aficionados in particular--will revel in this sparkling photographic celebration of the best hockey player to ever tie on skates. A star before he turned 13, his wattage never faded; his career is captured here from beginning to end. Literally. Photos of his first goal as a pee-wee and his final, tearful wave to the fans at Madison Square Garden bookend the splendid achievements of an athlete who, in 21 professional seasons, would virtually rewrite his sport's record book. John Davidson, a former NHL goalie-turned-commentator, recalls Gretzky's brilliance in his introductory essay, titled "The Meaning of Wayne." It would take volumes, though, to capture the meaning that comes through, page after page, in the images presented in this public, and personal, scrapbook. --Jeff Silverman ... Read more

The book review of Frank Fortuanos "Wayne Gretzky: star center

Frank Fortuanos "Wayne Gretzky star center is a marvelous book full of facts and career statistics of Wayne Gretzky. He tells a great story of his upbringing and even why he tucks his jersey in one side. But, the book does slow down. When he gets into a career it is repetitive to some degree. In each chapter he tells how many points he had in that season, and how hard he worked to win the Stanley cup. But it gives a great story of his life. I highly recommend it to anyone who is doing a report on him

Wayne Gretzky is by far the most famous and talented hockey player to hit the rink. Known as "The Great One" by his legions of fans, he took part in four Stanley Cup championships and currently slams pucks and scores goals for the St. Louis Blues. Beckett Great Sports Heroes: Wayne Gretzky pays tribute to the man who makes the ice sizzle.

Lavishly illustrated in full color, each Beckett Great Sports Heroes volume features distinguished sports authorities assessing the career of one of the greatest athletes of our time. Each book is a piece of history, a celebration of a sports legend. . . .

Wayne Gretzky shined for the Edmonton Oilers for nearly a decade. In Los Angeles, he energized the flagging Kings and sold the winter sport to sun-worshipping Southern Californians. In 1996, he joined forces with the St. Louis Blues.
