Product Description
These Hockey legends faced their toughest trials off the ice.

In When the Final Buzzer Sounds, a collection of poignant stories detailing the lives of hockey's greatest players, after the last goal has been tended and the final buzzer sounds. For most players in the NHL, hockey is the defining focus of their lives. Their days are determined by practices and games, teammates and coaches, fans and endless public appearances. Imagine how difficult it would be if all this were to stop with the sounding of the final buzzer. For the players in this book, it was-and the paths they took after hockey often led them far away from the roar of applause.

Out of the public eye and facing life off the ice, these champions of hockey share the sometimes bittersweet, sometimes unexpected, always insightful accounts of their journey out of the sports arena and into the larger world. After the Final Buzzer chronicles the lives of some of the NHL's most famous players after retirement and the turns their lives have taken, often just as wild and crazy as their time on the ice. Through in-depth one-on-one interviews this book profiles such heroes as:* PHIL ESPOSITO, who is giving back to the game that gave him so much* BOBBY HULL, a globe-trotting cattleman* GORDIE HOWE, still a legendary fan favorite, who signs as many as a thousand autographs a day* ERIC NESTERENKO, a self-confessed ski bum with the soul of a poet

After the Final Buzzer offers the vivid and captivating portraits of nine of hockey's greatest players, chronicling the struggles and triumphs that came after a life on the ice. ... Read more

Product Description
Slap Shot ranks as one of the most popular sports movies of all time, and the bespectacled, fighting Hanson Brothers are among the most memorable characters ever spawned by the silver screen. Now, one of the brothers--real-life hockey player Dave Hanson--invites readers onto the movie set and into the rough-and-tumble world of minor-league hockey in this hysterical and highly anticipated autobiography. Follow Hanson's fascinating life from the tough neighborhoods of St. Paul, Minnesota, to Johnstown, Pennsylvania, where he played for the Jets and made hockey's greatest movie (chumming with Paul Newman and getting involved in all kinds of mischief), and on to the NHL, where his boyhood dreams were fulfilled. Hanson's story--filled with both hilarity and adversity--will make you laugh out loud and warm your heart. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars who knew
wow! who knew a hanson could write.great book filled with great stories.even though im not a hudge hockey fan i enjoyed this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Slap Shot Original is a MUST READ!
I have HOSTED the Hanson Brothers at FIVE charity events and read Dave's book in one week. Simply put, I could not put it down, it is very entertaining and the detail is incredible. I told friends who bought the book. Old Time Hockey was truely amazing -- and the boys played for the love of the game. I had a chance to discuss the book with Dave one-on-one (a few times) and it's remarkable how he remembers these stories in detail -- like he was playing just yesterday. There are so many BORING books out there on a variety of sports topics and most are written by "no-bodies," Dave explains hockey in the feeder leagues in a very clear and detailed manner and puts you right there with him! Nice Job Dave![...]

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful insight.
I bought the book because it was by one of the "Hanson" brothers. It gave me more insight into one of the "men behind the foil." After reading the book I gained new found knowledge into the Johnstown Jets and more into the "Charlestown Chiefs." I knew that Nancy Dowd wrote the screenplay for the movie "Slapshot" and that her brother Ned played "Oggie Ogelthorpe" but I never knew that Ned actually played hockey. This book is a must for any fan of the movie "Slapshot."

5-0 out of 5 stars Surprised!
I didn't think this book would be that good, but was really surprised.I was around when this stuff was happening and can relate to what the author went through.I was surprised to find that a lot of what was in the movie actually happened, and loved hearing about the behind the scenes shenanigans that went on.It is also a story about overcome obstacles to achieve your goals, which our young people need to hear more of.Slap Shot Original: The Man, the Foil, and the Legend

5-0 out of 5 stars Reading is Fun - Who knew?
I received this as a gift, and thought what most of us do when someone give you a book.Oh, Thanks... I really liked the movie, but figured what could possibly be in the book that would be interesting.

Once I picked it up, I found it completely addicting and entertaining.I got mad when I had to put it down, and it is so full of good stories, I already know I will read it again.

The book covers a lot of details about how the movie was made, and what hockey was really like in the 70's. It is amazing how hard a player had to work and live to make it to the NHL or WHA.The book is very insightful and with perspective that is often lacking these days.

Beyond that it is just a fun book to read.I mean really fun.Laugh out loud at times fun.

It's easy to dismiss Mr. Hanson as a goon, but he is the type of person that deserves everyone's respect.
Even as a writer.

Excerpt: Gordon "Gordie" Howe, OC (born March 31, 1928 in Floral, Saskatchewan) is a retired professional ice hockey player from Canada who played for the Detroit Red Wings and Hartford Whalers of the National Hockey League (NHL), and the Houston Aeros and New England Whalers in the World Hockey Association (WHA). Howe is often referred to as Mr. Hockey, and is generally regarded as one of the greatest hockey players of all time. Howe is most famous for his scoring prowess, physical strength, and career longevity. He is the only player to have competed in the NHL in five (1940s through 1980s) different decades. A four-time Stanley Cup champion with the Red Wings, he won six Hart Trophies as the league's most valuable player and six Art Ross Trophies as the leading scorer. He was the recipient of the first NHL Lifetime Achievement Award in 2008. Howe was also referred to during his career as Power, Mr. Everything, Mr. All-Star, The Most, The Great Gordie, The King of Hockey, The Legend, The Man, No. 9, and "Mr. Elbows" (for his tough physical play). His name and nickname, "Mr. Hockey", as well as his wife's nickname as "Mrs. Hockey", are registered trademarks. Howe was born to parents Ab and Kate Howe in a farmhouse in Floral, Saskatchewan one of nine children. When Gordie was nine days old, the Howes moved to Saskatoon, where his father worked as a labourer during the Depression. In the summers, Howe would work construction with his father. Howe was mildly dyslexic growing up, but was physically beyond his years at an early age. Already six feet tall ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=141390 ... Read more

Purchase includes a free trial membership in the publisher's book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: The Avco World Trophy, also known as the Avco Cup, was the championship trophy of the original World Hockey Association (19721979). The trophy's naming rights were sold to the former Avco Corporation (a name originally derived from "Aviation Company"), a defense contractor who bought the rights to advertise their consumer finance division. The trophy was mocked by some for its corporate sponsorship and was never to develop anything approaching the significance and sentiment of the Stanley Cup, its National Hockey League rival. Still, the cup's design was often seen as creative in that it involved a freely-floating etched crystal globe embedded in the "stem" of the cup. The trophy was donated to the new league in 1972 along with approximately $500,000 by the AVCO Financial Services Corporation, and became the only the second major sports championship trophy to bear the name of a private corporation, the other being the Borg-Warner Trophy presented to the winner of the Indianapolis 500. Three AVCO trophies exist; besides the one that is on display at the Hockey Hall of Fame, the others are in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and in the Nova Scotia Sports Hall of Fame in Halifax. The trophy was retired after the WHA ceased operations in 1979. The Bobby Hullled Jets claimed the trophy on three occasions including the final league championship against Wayne Gretzky, Joe Micheletti, Nathan Shapiro and the Edmonton Oilers. Gordie Howe and the Aeros won it twice. The Avco Trophy in fact may have been most famous, or perhaps infamous, in its abs...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=727782 ... Read more
