Excerpt: Mario Lemieux, OC, CQ (born October 5, 1965) is a retired Canadian professional ice hockey player. He played 17 seasons as a forward for the Pittsburgh Penguins of the National Hockey League (NHL) between 1984 and 2005. Lemieux was a gifted playmaker and fast skater, despite his large size and strength. Lemieux often beat defencemen with fakes and dekes. He is currently the Penguins' principal owner and chairman of the board, having bought the team out of bankruptcy in 1999. He is the only person ever to win the Stanley Cup as both a player and an owner. Lemieux led Pittsburgh to two Stanley Cups in 1991 and 1992, Canada to an Olympic gold medal in 2002, a championship at the 2004 World Cup of Hockey and a Canada Cup in 1987. He won three Hart Trophies as the NHL's most valuable player during the season, six Art Ross Trophies as the league's leading scorer, and two Conn Smythe Trophies as playoff MVP. At the time of his retirement, he was the NHL's seventh-ranked all-time scorer with 690 goals and 1,033 assists. In 2004, he was inducted into Canada's Walk of Fame. Playing only 915 out of a potential 1428 regular season NHL games, Lemieux's career was plagued by health problems. His numerous ailments includ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=148878 ... Read more

Product Description
It was the Rumor of the New Millennium for the entire hockey world. The biggest story of the 2000-2001 National Hockey League season began as a whisper in Pittsburgh, and then raged across the sports pages and web sites of North America as the holidays neared. Mario Lemieux, the super-sized star of the National Hockey League driven too young from the game at which he excelled, was contemplating a comeback. In the wake of an interminable string of ailments and injuries, Super Mario had left the game in 1997 and limped into the Hockey Hall of Fame, barely into his thirties. By age thirty-four, he was president of the Pittsburgh Penguins, once again resurrecting a foundering franchise, this time in a suit. Ironically, accepting that responsibility only heightened his desire to address some unfinished business...on the ice. Healthier than he had been at any time in the last five years of his playing career, No.66 confirmed his return to the NHL ice wars, a belated Christmas present for Pittsburgh and the hockey world. Few could imagine the impact he would have on the league. From his early days as a hockey prodigy to the brilliant rise of his career (and its unexpected fall due to injury) and finally his return in a blaze of glory, Mario Lemieux: Over Time is the definitive book on one of the greatest hockey players of all time.

Lots of interesting info but could use more pictures of the places the cup has been found.

5-0 out of 5 stars Makes You Want To See The Cup Yourself!
Oh, man.....after reading this book I'd give anything to see and touch the Stanley Cup.I always looked at it with awe but after reading this stories compiled by Kevin Allen, I appreciate the Cup even more.As he says, it's the most recognizable and meaningful trophy in all of sports.

The book gives us a number of short stories of how players reacted to winning it after capturing NHL championships. The fun really gets going when you read about the players taking it around to their friends places and to parties where unspeakable things happened to it!Man, this Cup has been through a lot.

I appreciated the funny stories in the book but was even more impressed with the touching stories. To some, like the fathers and mothers who got up at 4 a.m. to drive their kids to hockey practices year-after-year, seeing their now-grownup son hold this Cup can't do anything but bring tears of joy.I know I got choked up reading some of this.

This is a wonderful book....and very readable.

4-0 out of 5 stars A must for any Hockey fan
Great insight to what goes on around the Cup.Of course, visiting the Cup live is the best option but this books allows you the appreciation of seeing her live and knowing who touched it and where she traveled to or in.
A must for any hockey fan.It gives some fun topic to chat about with your buddy's over some beers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Why Is the Stanley Cup in Mario Lemieux's Swimming Pool?: Ho
What do hockey players do with the Stanley Cup after winning the most cherished trophy ? That's what author Kevin Allen wrote about in the book Why is the Stanley Cup in Mario Lemieux's Swimming Pool?: How Winners Celebrate With the World's Most Famous Cup. With each player getting twenty-four hours to spend with Lord Stanley's Cup the cup comes back with a lot of bizarre memories.
The book takes you through the long journeys that they Stanley Cup endures. It takes you to many foreign countries like Russia and Canada, to the pool of Mario Lemieux or even to Cornell with Joe Nieuwendyk to visit his blind college professor. The book describes how meaningful winning the Stanley Cup is to hockey players. Long after the final game the players still have the same emotions with the Stanley Cup as they did the day they raised it over their heads. The book includes many players stories of when they won the Cup from the likes of Maurice Richard to more recently Brett Hull.
I highly recommend to those hockey fanatics who just can't get enough hockey. This book defiantly makes you want to keep reading and once you start you will not be able to put it down. Every time I see the precious trophy I always think back to this book and all the unusual things that the athletes did with the Stanley Cup.

5-0 out of 5 stars a pretty funny book
this book was pretty funny to hear all the stories of the stanley cup it makes you laugh when you see people drink out of it to it also makes you think what you would do if you ever won the cup its great ... Read more

Despite a relentless series of medical setba cks, including a well-publicised battle with cancer, Mario L emieux led the Pittsburgh Penguins to two Stanley Cups and w on six NHL scoring titles before retiring in 1997 at the age of 31. 'Amazon.com Review
One of those rare athletes whose skills raise the level of hissport, Mario Lemieux, who twice led the Pittsburgh Penguins to theStanley Cup, was a courageous and charismatic presence from the momenthe skated onto the ice; he deposited his first NHL shot into the net,and never looked back. No defense could stop him, not even Hodgkin'sdisease. He forechecked just about everything that stood between himand his goals--both on and off the ice. Lemieux retired in 1997, hisplace in the hockey pantheon assured, and The Final Period, with its dazzling display of text and photographs, is a brillianttribute to his career. ... Read more

Wonderfully researched, beautifully written, and most of all, filled with an exciting collection of color action photographs, it captures Lemieux's unique skills throughout his stellar career. When this hockey superstar announced his return to the NHL in December 2000 after a three-year absence, no one doubted that he would once again become the most explosive scorer in the league. 4-0 out of 5 stars Mario Lemieux(6-7)
Mario started playing hockey when he was just little. When Mario was about eleven years old he had good talent for his age. He was first drafted to Pittsburgh, But he refused to play here because of the salary. Mario got Hodgkin's disease when he was in Pittsburgh, But he soon came back and started scoring again. Mario married a girl named Nathalie.

I liked the book because it was interesting. The pictures were really good. There are little captions that tell more information like how many trophies Mario won. I thought it was really good and I would rate the book 7 out of 10.

I would recommend this book if you like to watch or play hockey. ... Read more
