Product Description
Rich, insightful, and highly engaging, Bruce Dowbiggin’s much-praised examination of the craft of hockey was hailed by critics as an enduring addition to the literature of sports.

What makes the best in the hockey business the best? By analyzing forward Steve Yzerman’s superb talent for leadership, defenseman Chris Chelio’s two-way brilliance, goaltender Dominik Hasek’s unrivalled ability to stop the puck, and hockey executive Glen Sather’s gift for construction, shaping, and inspiring a team, Dowbiggin not only illuminates hockey greatness, he also documents the subtle evolution in how the NHL game is played. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars too many errors
The other reader only pointed out one major error in this book.I have only read ten pages in the Yzerman section and have identified four errors. Detroit is not located on the St.Clair River, New Jersey swept the Wings inthe finals the lockout season, obviously not the year they won 62 games,Yzerman did not lose the Calder Trophy to Steve Larmer, and Yzerman'soldest daughter is named Isabella.Perhaps the author should stick tobroadcasting and let people who know how to research or, at least findpeople who can research, do the writing.

3-0 out of 5 stars Flawed but interesting
A flawed but interesting book. It attempts to be a hockey version of Peter King's "Inside the Helmet," but without King's insight. What will truly annoy fans of the game are the factual errors that any competenteditor would have caught. For example, Dowbiggin writes ofClintMalarchuk's life threatening injury, but has him playing for the WashingtonCapitals. I am being picky sure, but how do you write about a scene no one"will ever forget" and then get the team wrong?! Overall though, the book is a welcome change from the suck up bios and transcribedinterviews passed off as books about hockey. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific read
Bought these books for my dad and father-in-law who are 90 and 88.They lived thru many years of Red Wing memories. They enjoyed the books very much and I know we will hear many many stories as a result of their reading.Thank you.

5-0 out of 5 stars stanley cup book
my grandson LOVED the book, even though they lost the2009 stanley cup.
i, too, enjoyed it.

4-0 out of 5 stars A must for Red Wings fans
The players' passion for the sport and their Detroit franchise come through in this one.You get a real feeling for what it takes to make it to the top level of professional hockey and form a winning team.Probably not as of much interest to fans of other teams.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book for a Wings fan
I bought this book for my father who is a huge wings fan.It details in order historically the careers of key players and coaches and was the perfect father's day gift.

5-0 out of 5 stars I loved it but...
I mulled over this book for a long time thinking it was some fanboy "history" lesson, but I broke down and bought it anyway. I was so thrilled after I started reading it to see that it was all from the players' words! I loved reading about the guys from the 40s all the way to now. It is a inspirational book and it makes me proud to be a fan even though I was not born into hockey. No I was not a recent convert or riding their tails when they won, I started with the in the 80's (yes when they were not at their all time best). Anyway, the only thing about the book I was disappointed with is it did not have Gordie Howe's words (even though he wrote his own book, he could have something in it), Larionov, Federov, Vernon, and many others who did not contribute. Of course, it could have been the authors choice to not include them so I hope there will be a volume two!!! Still, this is a fabulous book to have if you really are a fan of the Red Wings and a fan of hockey. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great book
For anyone that loves the Detroit Red Wings, or ice hockey in general, this is a great book.Good information and wonderful pictures. It was better than I imagined when I saw it online.I used it as a birthday gift, and the recipient is a huge Yzerman fan... he absolutely loved the book.Said it was one of his best presents ever.

5-0 out of 5 stars A tribute to "The Captain"
A wonderful keepsake for anyone who was--and still is--a Steve Yzerman fan. A man with incredible accomplishments and integrity, he was a dedicated captain and dedicated to his teammates and his fans. His fans, in turn, were just as dedicated to him.And I think I probably speak for every one of them when I say it was a really sad day when he retired. It was almost like the lights went out in Michigan. We would have been happy to see him in a Red Wings jersey for many years to come.We would have been happy just to see him out there skating around. He is a shining example of what every hockey player should strive to be but he was pretty unique and he'll be hard to beat.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE TITLE SAYS IT ALL
The tagline to this book says it all..."22 seasons, 3 cups, one team" and that one team may be more important than the three Stanley Cups.In this era of free agency and mega-million dollar salaries, Steve Yzerman was a rarity...a superstar athlete who played his entire career with just one team. You need only mention "The Captain" to any Detroiter and they will know who you are talking about.

This marvelous book from the Detroit Free Press and Triumph books traces the career of one of the greatest professional athletes in Detroit sports history. The word legend is thrown about quite freely these days but it certainly applies to Yzerman. Here was perhaps the most modest superstar you could ever hope to meet.A fierce competitor on the ice, who over came numerous injuries, and a pure gentleman off the ice, Yzerman retired after the 2005 - 2006 season to take a much deserved spot in the Red Wings front office.More than any other player, coach, or owner, Yzerman was responsible for resurrecting a once great hockey team that had fallen on lean times in the 1970's and early 1980's.

We get to see a young Yzerman, just 18 years old as he shakes hands with team owner Mike Illitch after being selected in the first round...only after the Wings first choice, Pat LaFontaine, was drafted one spot earlier. We can all thank the NY Islanders for that!Yzerman was named team captain in 1986, at just 21 years of age, making him the youngest captain in team history.

The book tracks Yzerman's career, season-by-season, reprinting articles by Free Press writers such as Mitch Albom, Keith Gave, and Nick Cotsonika.Re-live those early playoff disappointments including the Stanley Cup finals loss to New Jersey in 1995. Then relive the glory of 1997 as the Red Wings took revenge on the hated Colorado Avs, first in the regular season, and then in the playoffs, on their way to their first Stanley cup since 1955.Yzerman's visit to the David Letterman Show and the tragic accident of Vladimir Konstantinov is also covered as well as Stevie's career achievements and milestones and his laundry list of injuries suffered throughout his career.

This is a must have for any Red Wings fan!

5-0 out of 5 stars For Hockey Lovers Everywhere...
I just finished reading Hockeytown Hero:The Steve Yzerman Story. Finally, a biography written for kids about our Detroit Red Wings Captain!Author Shelley Lazarus includes interviews with Yzerman, his teammates, and other hockey legends, including Scotty Bowman and Bryan Trottier.

I thought the book was well written; a great story told artfully.Trust me when I say grown ups will enjoy it as much as the kids! While the book focuses on Yzerman's hockey career -- from the time he first skated at age three, through two Stanley Cup championships -- I really enjoyed the personal glimpses and photographs included as well.Yzerman's parents even provide team pictures of his early years as a "Moose Pup All-Star" (age 8.)

I already bought copies for my neices & nephews, and saved one for myself, too! You've got to read this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars If you're not a Stevie Y fan, this book will make you one.
I highly reccomend this book to any fan of the Red Wings and their Captain. Some parts will make you smile while other parts will make you teary-eyed, but all of it will make you very proud to be a Red Wings fan. And if you're not already a fan, this book just might make you into one. If you think all modern athletes are selfish and just in it for the money, this book will show you that there are still exceptions.Unfortunately, itwas published before the Wings won their latest Cups, so you can't readabout that in here, but that just makes you realize how special it is towin the Cup.

5-0 out of 5 stars Steve Yzerman is the GREATEST hockey player of all times!
When I got the book the first night I could not put it down.To see what he has gone through in his carree, that was amazing. He is the greatest hockey player who ever lived, and now because of the chapionships that theteam has won under his leadership, other are now FINALLY realizing it.Hehas done everything for this team and city, he has given us his heart, andin return we give him ours.He has captured our hearts and through thisboook you can get an indepth look at the making of a SUPERSTAR!

I know this is so sappy, but I think the book is so sweet! I've read it many times since I bought it and it brings tears to my eyes to read the heartbreak Stevie Y suffered b/c he couldn't get achieve his goal ofhoisting the Cup.

It's a MUST have for all true Steve Yzerman fans andhas some really nice pictures in it. :)

5-0 out of 5 stars It's about time!
This book is great! Steve Yzerman has been the heart and soul of the Detroit Red Wings for so long. It's nice to finally get the chance to learn all about him. Some of us were just 9 years old when he came to the Wings and don't remember how small, akward, and young he was. Also, great pictures! But, one warning, the book was written before the 96-97 season so you won't see a Stanley Cup chapter in it and you'll hear lots of mentions of how Stevie still hasn't raised the chalice. ... Product Description
An insider's look at life on the lines

To hockey fans, Ray Scapinello's name and face are as recognizable as any star player or coach in the NHL. Scampy, as he is affectionately known has had a long and storied career as a linesman in the NHL. His 5-foot-7 frame and 163 pounds belie his ability and endurance on the ice. When Ray retired in 2004 after 33 years in the NHL, he had officiated in 2,500 regular season matches (never missing a game), 426 playoff games, and an astounding twenty Stanley Cup final series. His untouchable statistics make him a lock to enter the Hockey Hall of Fame as an official, but even they do not do justice to the respect he has earned from officials, players, coaches, and fans alike. On and off the ice, Scampy is considered one of hockey's great personalities, a consummate professional, a chronic practical joker, and a true ambassador of the sport.

Between the Lines gives a rare glimpse inside the world of hockey from an unusual perspective — through the eyes of one of the game's greatest and best-loved officials. Scampy shares his tales of life both on and off the ice as an official, an inside look at what those players and coaches are really like, what they really say and do, and what the game looks like between the lines. Full of fun stories, perspective on how the game has changed and evolved, and stories and interviews about Scampy from players, coaches, and other officials, Between the Lines is a captivating memoir of a truly unique life in hockey. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Captivating
I bought 2 copies. One an electronic download for myself and a paperback for another huge NHL fan I work with. It was very interesting to read. I think of all the games I watch and how you don't really notice the refs. Well they have a lot of insight to the players and coaches personalities and situations along with the behind the scenes stuff. I enjoyed the book a great deal and couldn't put it down.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a GREAT Book
I really don't write reviews that much.I am only doing this because I truly loved the book and finished it in a few days.I just love hockey stories and this book fit the bill for me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great airplane book
I (asked for and) received this book for Christmas (Thanks, Mom!) and read it on the plane ride to Minnesota. It was a fun, entertaining read. For a post-lockout new fan, as I am, I found the mentions of the mechanics of the game interesting and for a short while I considered trying to be a referee or linesman in the NHL, until I realized I couldn't skate forwards that well, let alone backwards, sideways, or while holding myself up on the boards. The non-mechanics parts of the book were also fun - It has a lot of stories of "Scampy's" personal experiences working in the league for over 20 years. If you're looking for a light*, fun read about hockey, this is certainly the book for you.

*"Light" meaning quick and mostly painless, and we're comparing it to the wide range of literature rather than other hockey books.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good but could have been better
This was a good book. But if you're looking for juicy stories you won't find many (if any) here.

5-0 out of 5 stars Loved the book!

Product Description
In a notorious career with the Detroit Red Wings and Chicago Blackhawks, Bob Probert racked up points, penalty minutes, and bar bills, establishing himself as one of the most feared enforcers in the history of the NHL. On the ice, he was a fan favorite. He backed up his teammates 100 percent, taking on the toughest guys of his era. Off the ice, Probert played hard as well. Over his pro career he went through rehab 10 times, was suspended twice, was jailed for carrying cocaine across the border, and survived a near fatal motorcycle crash. When he died unexpectedly of a heart attack at the age of 45 on July 5, 2010, he was hard at work on his memoir. Probert wanted to tell his story in his own words to set the record straight.

Tough Guy is a gripping journey through the life of Bob Probert, with jaw-dropping stories of his on-ice battles and his reckless encounters with drugs, alcohol, police, customs officials, courts, and the NHL, told in his own voice and with his rich sense of humor. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Tough Guy: My Life on the Edge
A must read for any Probie fan, Red Wings fan or Hockey fan. This book gives insight to all the fights (physical, chemical ect...) Probie went through until his death. This book was difficult to put down. Growing up reading about all the problems he had in the newspaper it was nice to finally get Proberts side of the story.Five stars without question.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Probie the King of Enforcers"
A riveting book about the greatest enforcer in the history of the NHL. "Probie" was also a fine all around player who could make a play in the best hockey league in the world. I knew Bob was wild and crazy but not this wild! Bob really had some demons and I don't think he could do much about them but try every day to overcome them. In a way I feel sorry for him and what he put his wife and family through but it's the "whole truth and nothing but the truth" from a guy who wasn't much afraid of anything! To me, in this book, "Probie" wanted to come clean so you got the facts right from the horses mouth. Great book if you love hockey ! Five Stars *****!

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read!
I am a Leaf fan that hated Bob Probert as a kid.As I got older and Probert moved on to Chicago I respected him much more and appreciated his abilities.I guess that comes with age as I learned to respect Stevie Y much the same way even though I was sick to my stomach at having to watch the Wings win Stanley Cups. This is an excellent account of Probert's life told in his own words and I thought it was very well done.I literally could not put this book down and read it in one night.Definitely worth it for any hockey fan - not just Red Wing and/or Blackhawks fans.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank you to the Probert's
This book is fantastic, and for fans of Bob Probert, it is extremely insightful. The book opens with a prologue from Steve Yzerman and Mrs. Probert, and goes on to recount the day that Bob passed away. Chapter 1 starts the autobiographical story of Probie's life, and he goes into great detail about the highs and low's of his career. To truly understand 'The Enforcer,' this is a must read. Thanks for the memories Bob- ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good within its limitations
Douglas Hunter's subtitle "The Making of a Champion" tells the prospective reader what the author's focus is, as does the introduction. He sticks within those parameters and does a fairly good job of relating Yzerman's growth as a player throughout his career.I won't reiterate previous reviewers' listing of some factual errors. Those errors were annoying and caused me to subtract a rating star.I wasn't too bothered by the lack of information on his family because they were obviously a portion of Yzerman's maturation.Overall it's worth reading, although you may want to avail yourself of your local library's resources to obtain it because it's not a keeper for rereading, as Boys of Summer is.

2-0 out of 5 stars The Real Yzerman
Yzerman by Douglas Hunter is a revealing portrait of how an individual star player becomes a champion by transforming his game to a more defensive all around skilled player. He sacrifices his personal time to achieve team-based success and improves the players and organization around him. The book is packed with detail on the draft and how the organization built the team around him. Yzerman gets in depth on how the star changed from a goal scoring all about points man, to the captain who would do the checking or dice in front of a puck. Hunter talks about his off ice experience that Yzerman has throughout his career.

Douglas Hunter has never met or even talked to the famous Stevie Y while he writes this book and probably from my take on the book never even saw him play. As I read Yzerman I found the book was very bland. It was hard to keep reading and picking it up because it was just packed with detail and a bunch of nonsense that had really nothing to do with Yzerman too much. The book just doesn't grab your attention the way watching Steve Yzerman play does. That kind of took the excitement from the book. Yzerman is a great star today and he doesn't really show off his talent but just makes hockey look so easy. He sacrifices his body often and will pass before he ever shoots. I think the book kind of takes away Steve's relaxed playing style. I wouldn't really recommend this book unless you're a die-hard Yzerman fan or a detail wiz.

1-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Terrible
Let's see, what can I say that might actually be helpful.Let me preface this by saying that I'm a die-hard Detroit sports fan, and have been ever since I moved to Michigan in 1984.I love the Tigers more than anything, but Yzerman is my favorite athlete of all time.

In doing research for any book, a competent author would usually have pages and pages of notes.Through careful editing, only the most important and relevant details would actually be placed in the book itself. However, in this book, Hunter's laziness is evident. It looks as if he conducted maybe 7 or 8 interviews for this book, and in order to fill space, inserted every mundane detail of every interview into this book. The bibliography is shamefully short.Hunter even has the audacity to use information from his book about Tim Horton and insert it into this book to try and fill space. What does Tim Horton have to do with Steve Yzerman?Nothing.I'm not even going to start on the factual inaccuracies.

In addition, the narrative is lost and directionless.Hunter keeps the narrative jumping around in time, going off on tangents that don't contribute anything but waste the reader's time.Hunter also fails to provide details of Yzerman's on ice career, aside from cumulative season statistics. This makes me think that Hunter did not watch Yzerman play much, because anyone who saw Yzerman in his prime would want to describe Yzerman's electrifying play. There isn't even any satisfactory mention of Yzerman's Game 7 overtime winner against St. Louis.

Bottom line, it looks like Hunter was churning this out to try and fill the vacuum in the market for Yzerman books.Do a couple interviews, surf a couple websites, write a crappy book, make a quick buck. This book is very poorly and lazily written; it might be the worst thing I've ever read. And I read a lot.It is a disgrace to Yzerman, books, authors, and humanity.Do not buy this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Check your facts!!
I was ecstatic when I saw a book based solely on Steve Yzerman was finally being published.I was completely misguided. This book wasn't about Steve Yzerman the person/hockey all-star, this book was about all the things that happened around Yzerman over the last 3 decades.I was also horrified that the author never even interviewed Yzerman.Makes me think I should write a book.I know Gerard Gallant would talk to me and I know that I would remember that he coached the Summerside Hemphill Pontiac Western Capitals who won the Royal Bank Cup in 1997.Which leads me to the comment that not only was this book a huge disappointment because it gave us nothing about the real Yzerman, but it was replete with errors.Essentially it is wrong to have this book in the non-fiction section of the bookstore because most of the information is so inaccurate that the novel is fictional.Don't waste your money.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good but Not Great
I read Hunter's book on Scotty Bowman and thoroughly enjoyed it. Likewise, "Yzerman" is a good book told by this strong storyteller. The factual errors (noted here in other reviews) brought the breezy read to a screeching halt for me, but it didn't prevent me from liking it and sending my copy on to friends. If you're a Detroiter (or a transplant) you'll enjoy the look back on Yzerman's early days with the Wings - which went largerly unnoticed thanks to the Tigers surge in the standings. The factual stuff is the only reason I give it a four-star and not a five. I highly recommend the Bowman book. ... Read more
