History Alexander Abt A lexander Abt, long known as one of the most musical skaters in the world, is looking for a healthy 2002 season and setting his sights on reaching his goal of becoming a World Champion. He took a big step toward that goal by winning the Bronze Medal at Skate America in Colorado Springs, Colo., in October of last year and finishing fourth at the Sparkassen (Nations) Cup in Germany in November. He finished 6th at the 2002 Winter Olympics. Last year Abt became seriously ill at the Europeans with a sinus infection. He still came very close to earning a spot on the medal stand. And, despite his sinus problems, that weakened his immune system and were responsible for other health problems and fatigue, he finished sixth at the World Championships in Vancouver. At the 2002 European Championships, Abt skated magnificent programs to win the Silver Medal. Alexader Abt finished sixth at the 2002 Winter Olympics. Alexander underwent surgery in Moscow in May to remove cysts in his sinuses. The doctors had to cut through his gum to remove the cysts, the size of walnuts. "Everything went well and I feel a lot better." Abt said. He had to stay in the hospital a week. Within a month Abt returned to Lake Arrowhead to resume training. "I never lost hope that I can go on with skating," he said. "I won't stop until I'm World Champion. This is my big dream. I skate with my heart."
Extractions: T h e S t o r y o f S a s h a O n the ice, it's just Alexander Abt and the music. In practice, he improvises, enjoys and doesn't pay attention to anything that is going on around him. It doesn't matter if a classical piece or a modern song is played - Sasha (as he is called by his friends) can skate to every kind of music. He is the most musical skater since Viktor Petrenko, and everyone realizes this immediately. E ven before he finally was able to compete in the 1998 Europeans (where he won the Bronze medal), skating fans knew his name and talked about his special talent. Wherever he skated, he drew always the attention of the fans and the media as he did for example at the 1995 Skate America. U nfortunately, Abt's promising career was hindered by many injuries and also by unfair decisions at Russian Nationals. 1993 he finished fourth at the Nationals in St. Petersburg although he skated better than the more experienced Oleg Tataurov. In the 1998 Nationals in Moscow he was fourth again, although he delivered a strong free program whereas Alexei Yagudin faltered. H owever, Alexander Abt didn't leave and look for another country to compete for as others like Igor Pashkevitch did.
Extractions: Abt just missed winning his first medal at the 2002 World Championships, finishing fourth. Abt moved from Lake Arrowhead, Calif., to train in Hackensack, N.J., over the summer.
Extractions: At age six, Abt was sent by his grandmother to the ice rink, in order to keep himself healthy. His progress has been held back by serve injuries which nearly ended his career. At first, he had a knee problem and underwent surgery. Then, in the summer of 1996, he cut the muscle in his right thigh with his left blade when crashing into the border during an exhibition in Mexico. Following this accident he had to remain in hospital for weeks. He had to undergo knee surgery again in December 1998. He suffered from a sinus infection at Europeans 2001 and collapsed after the free skating in the kiss and cry area. Abt married his girlfriend, former ice dancer Elena Pavlova in April 1999. Their son Makar was born in March 2000. Abt moved to Lake Arrowhead, Calif., in June 2001 to train there. Abt's hobbies include playing guitar, computers and music.
