4-0 out of 5 stars For fans of Scott Hamilton
I have been a Scott fan since before the '84 Olympics and I enjoyed reading this book. His positive outgoing personality shines on every page, while overall the book reveals a side of Scott the public never sees. His triumph against cancer is just one part of his inspirational and touching story.I hope he will write more about his life and continue skating now that he unretired.

2-0 out of 5 stars I wished Scott could be more forgiving!
I just couldn't read Scott Hamilton after I read what he wrote about Tonya Harding. It would have been nice if he could have forgiven her. After all, Tonya's stupid actions allowed him and others in the figure skating community who benefited from it with all the attention and opportunities to make them richer.

It's sad that we live in a country where Mike Tyson, a convicted rapist, is allowed to box again and be forgiven while Tonya Harding's stupid actions get her treated like a leper for the rest of her life. She can't skate anymore nor train hopeful skaters to compete neither. Oh well, I guess figure skating is only a sport for those who could afford to skate, train, and compete in the skating world. Maybe that's why I gave up on figure skating after 1994, I couldn't take the scorn aimed at one person, Tonya.

Scott blames her for ruining Josee Chouinard's poor performance in the 1994 games; Nancy's attack; and the circus that Tonya brought to the games. I'm sorry but it's time to let go and forgive and move on.

5-0 out of 5 stars Landing It: My Life On and Off the Ice
A very good story about Scott Hamiliton's Life.I have followed his career and his problems with cancer. He is a very dedicated & honest person.

3-0 out of 5 stars The Star Of the Ice Show.
You might think that Scott Hamilton led a charmed life in the world of ice skating. Not so, he had many setbacks; but his determination to show the world that he is somebody and his talent (plus hard work) let him enjoy comebacks and show his mettle.Overcoming many personal obstacles, he proved that no one could surpass him on the ice.

He was grateful to his adopted family and was able to provide vacations in Hawaii and fishing in Alaska.Always on the road as his continued search for excellence kept himstriving to improve his skills, using Denver as his home base, he was actually a 'Star on Ice,' an Olympic champion, and a friend to his competitors.

A few years ago, he put on a spectacular show (out on video) with his skater friends, along with my favorite singer providing the music. Not Buble, the other Michael! After the 1994 Olympics, I had become sated with too much t.v. coverage of figure skatingbut a dear friend, Eva Ezell, loved Scott and all the elaborate outfits the girl skaters came up with.Scott was honest in his presentations with no deceit; he was authentic. He was true blue and God saved him from an illness few would have endured. Some of us can rise above the pain.It takes a special person, and he truly is one.

4-0 out of 5 stars What a guy!!! :-)
I loved reading this book.I am a big ice-skating fan and have watched it since I was a kid.
The book starts off in chapter one talking about his cancer discovery already. You start to get a feel for who he is based on the way he handled the news of his illness etc. Then he talks about his childhood and the sacrifices his mom made to drive him for miles to get to competitions. He goes on to talk about his actuall career (and this is the reason for losing a star - because he talks too much about his routines and the types of jumps and the scores.Enough already, just let us learn about him).He even includes a chapter about Sergei Grinkov (one of my other favourite skaters who died tragically and unexpectedly on the ice) which is nice and moving.
Scott has a real upbeat personality and a very positive attitude which will take him a long way.He is a great guy and a brilliant skater and I enjoyed reading about him and his career (just not all the endless jumps).I recommend this to all skating fans and cancer patients looking for a bit of inspiration. It's really good. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars NIce book!
this is a nice book for beginners to have a general idea.however this book can not substitute a coach. Some instructions must be explained in details.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best FS book I've read
I wasted a lot of money on figure skating books prior to buying this one. This book includes everything you need to know if you are a skating parent or are new to figure skating.A lot of books either speak to you as though you are an idiot or they are too advanced. This book is just right and packs EVERYTHING you could ever want to know about FS into an easy-to-read and enjoyable format.Buy this one first, you won't need to waste your money on other books.

***2010: a little outdated now, but still great overview for beginner.***

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome book!Very well written by a champ!
This book was not only extremely informative but it was written with a fun, light tone that made reading enjoyable.Everything was very user friendly and never, at any given time, was I slightly confused or bored.Great book for skaters (because secrets are revealed) and non-skaters (who always wondered about the names of things, how certain moves are done, etc.).

5-0 out of 5 stars Dummies?
The title might just as well be "Ice skating for aspiring professionals."In any case, a wonderful book about skating, well written and clear.I saw the chart on the Axel and thought, "Oh!It's just a waltz jump with a full turn at the end.Wow!I can do that!"Fortunately, I haven't attempted that yet. I'd have to be a dummy to try.Knees are nice. (BTW I'm well over 13 y.o.)

4-0 out of 5 stars Good reading, although the judging system has changed
This is a great book for fans of the sport, but especially those armchair fans who know nothing about the elements but want to appreciate the finer points of this lovely sport. An explanation of the jumps and spins, plus how a program is put together and an overview of the rules, make this an entertaining and useful tool. ... Read more

Scott Hamilton is one of the most beloved figure skaters in the world-not just among his colleagues, but to the sport's countless fans as well. So when the Olympic gold medalist and four-time World Champion launched his "Stars on Ice" tour back in 1986, everyone wished him the best. In fact, the best is exactly what he got. Hamilton's "Stars on Ice" has become the most successful ice skating tour on the planet. In this lively look at figure skating's most remarkable success story, Stars on Ice features full-color illustrations of the graceful skaters who have entertained fans throughout the show's reign. From Dorothy Hamill to Brian Orser, from Katarina Witt to Kristi Yamaguchi, Stars on Ice beautifully displays the talents of Olympic and World Champion skaters through stunningly realistic photography. In addition, behind-the-scenes vignettes from the tour reveal the heartfelt camaraderie and sense of family felt among the skaters. 5-0 out of 5 stars Breath taking..
This book was what i expected it to be.It was full of colorful pictures, and very good description of how Stars on Ice evolved to what it is now. GREAT pictures excellent story....though if u were thinking of getting thevideo "The Best of Stars on Ice" ... it wasnt good at all.Theywere performances from the last 5 years and not the 10 years it talks abouton its back cover..

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent work about how Stars On Ice evolved into The Tour!
Reason why I bought the book: Just one. Rosalynn Sumners. She was rather reluctant when Scott called her and invited her to join the tour......and that was back in 1986. Thirteen years and a few hundred shows later, Rozhas matured into one of the finest entertainers on the ice. Her departurefrom the SOI tour after the 1998-99 season was rather sad, but rereadingher thoughts and feelings on subjects such as Sergei's death to Scott'scancer and her own shining moments was well worth the money I paid for thebook. Roz, I'll miss you when SOI starts the 1999-2000 tour. God bless!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great photos
This book has lots of great photos pf all the skaters. A must for every SOI fan.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brings You Close To Katia and SOI!!
I thought this was an absolutely fantastic book!!! It really gets you up close and personal with the World's Greatest Skating Tour, and I loved the chapter in tribute to Sergei Grinkov. Lots of terrific pictures from allthe programs through the years!! It starts out with the story of how StarsOn Ice got started, and tells about the earliest skaters, all the way up totoday's performers (like my favourite, Katia Gordeeva). This book is amust-have for any fan of SOI and skating in general. You will definatelyhave to see the show in person, after this book!!!

3-0 out of 5 stars did not reach potential, but not bad either
First, as in nearly all figure skating books these days, the photography is excellent. The photographs will make the reader rush out and buy tickets to Stars on Ice. The chapter about the tragic death of Sergei Grinkov is asmoving as one would expect. However, the family feeling of Stars on Ice didnot shine through out the entire book. In most chapters it was a shallow, superficial coverage of this unique tour. It could have been so much more. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars My Book Must Of Shrunk In The Mail
Not so much a review of the book - just a warning to you all about the SIZE of the book. Please know that this book is only about 2 inches by 3 inches (If that).I was surprised when I opened up the BIG box that it came in.It has pictures on one side of the page and about 20 words on the other page.So please know that you will read this book in under 5 minutes. It's not a novel.I suggest "Landing it" if you want to read more about his life story. If I knew of the size of this book - and the content - I might of still bought it, but when it's the only thing you orderd - not worth the shipping charges.

Hope this helps you out with your purchase! ... Read more
