5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Read!
This book is not an autobiography but a great look back on the experiences of the late great George Best among others. It was a captivating hilarious read which makes me wish I could have seen him in one of his after hours shows. The book is a show in itself and shows a side of what football (Soccer in N. America) was and still should be really all about...the good times. Sadly George did this to excess and eventually paid the price but then what a life. The stories are not all about George Best but collections of various football lore. Well worth the purchase price.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant
Captivating reading from cover to cover brought back memories of the golden age of football in the 60's and 70's. Great look at the life of one of the greatest players the game has ever seen. Fantastic insights into Bestie's life and the life of a professional footballer of the times. Also sheds some interesting and entertaining tidbits on some of the other football stars of the day. ... Product Description

It's a story everyone thinks they know, the young boy from the back streets of Belfast who grew up to be the most famous soccer player in the world, a legend who was the first superstar of the sport but whose troubled personal life, as much as his athletic genius, came to dominate the headlines. But Barbara and Carol, George's sisters, and Dickie, his father, know more. Revealing for the first time the real story of George Best—as told by those who knew him and loved him most, this is the inside story of the ordinary Belfast family whose love for, and contact with, their famous son and brother never wavered through the years. It's the story of a family desperately helping him as he battled the illness that also claimed the life of their beloved wife and mother. Illustrated with a wealth of previously unseen family photographs, documents and correspondence—much of it deeply poignant—between George and his family, this is a searingly honest book about the influences that molded the legend, and the demons that haunted his life. Speaking for the first time, the intensely private Best family reveals how George really felt about the people and the events that shaped his life. Barbara Best is frank in confronting George's own failings and those of some of the people who were close to him, as well as offering a unique perspective on the many pressures to which he was subject.

5-0 out of 5 stars Blessed: The Autobiography by George Best
Soccer genius and riveting story, honest story about how alcohol can consume and destroy a life. In his eyes maybe not destroyed but certainly cut short.

3-0 out of 5 stars Blessed
Very interesting especially for someone that wasn't familiar with football in the 60's and 70's. Mr. Best seemed like a larger than life character and it of course makes for a great read both the good and the bad.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Read.
I was never a huge fan of Bestie-his behavior always seemed immature and impulsive. This book has changed my mind. The author fully acknowledges his shortcomings, and the insight into the extent of his battle with alcohol truly reveals someone battling a monster rather than just acting foolishly. The book is a great read and I would recommend to anyone with even a passing interest in Best and British football.

4-0 out of 5 stars Booze, Birds and Footy... in that order
George Best's auotbiography reads like any other footballer's biography for about the first third of the book. It's only after that it starts to get insightful and the reader begins to get an idea of the extent of what alcoholism can do to a person.

George's life is a series of highs; winning the European Cup with Manchester United in 1968 and being considered one of the best footballers in the world, and lows; planning his suicide. It's a sad story in many ways.

Much of the time George is his own worst enemy, but he doesn't shy away from admitting as much. There are some revelations new to me: Like when Ron Atkinson asked George to return to Manchester United in the 80's - thanks goodness that didn't happen, an image of boyhood hero would've been shattered.

Although you're not left with the feeling that George is cured from alcoholism by any means, and may go off the rails at any time, you're at least given the comfort that he's happier living back close to his roots.

More than just another footballer talking football. ... Read more

Product Description
Nobody knows George Best quite like his ex-wife Angie. The couple were the Victoria and David Beckham of their time and the much-publicised relationship was conducted in the full glare of the media spotlight. Being with George was an emotional roller-coaster ride during which Angie occasionally soared the heights but, much more often, endured soul-destroying lows. Life with George Best was always "interesting". This candid autobiography provides an insight into George's decline. With honesty, Angie details the battles with the booze, the non-stop womanising and the deterioration of one of Britain's greatest footballers. Angie tried to remain in contact with George, offering support and advice to help him conquer his alcohol addiction. Despite everything George put her through, Angie admits: "I remain good friends with George. He is the only man I ever loved". "George and me" is a tale of one woman's battle to find the strength to leave and then rebuild her own life. ... Read more

Product Description
George Best is widely regarded as the finest footballer ever produced by the British Isles. His death in November 2005 prompted lengthy analysis of his career and his standing in the game, a debate The Complete George Best will seek to settle.Known primarily for his rock n roll lifestyle, this book attempts to shed more light on his often forgotten football career which was, after all, the source of his fame.Taking in every first class match George played for Manchester United and Northern Ireland with lenthy analysis of his later career in America and Fulham, The Complete George Best traces a career that caught light in the mid-sixties and burned brightly for the next 7 seasons. Many claimed that Best was the pre-eminent player in the world during this period, his performance against Benfi ca in Lisbon, when he inspired United to a 5-1 win is widely regarded as the turning point for the Ulsterman, after which life was never quite the same as first the birds and then the booze followed fame into Best s life.Best's career was inextricably linked with the fortunes of Manchester United in the 60s and Matt Busby's quest for the European Cup following the tragedy of the Munich Air disaster. United's run to the European Cup Final of 1968 saw Best a marked man. By this stage his talent was well-known and George came to life in the semi-fi nal against Real Madrid, scoring in the first leg and setting up an unlikely winner for Bill Foulkes in the second. The fi nal will always be remembered for Best's brilliant goal just minutes into extra time when he found space on the left andskinned the last man before rounding the 'keeper. Most people regard the European triumph as the beginning of the end. In hindsight, and with medals the sole measure of a career's worth, then it probably was, yet Best was good enough to thrill crowds well into the next decade with famous performances such as his double hat-trick against Northampton on a muddy pitch in 1970 and a famous hat-trick against Southampton a year later. Sadly, alcholism robbed us of the best of George but most players would kill for a career record that read 639 appearances, 229 goals. The Complete George Best is ideal both as a work of reference and a detailed insight into the great man s career. Darren Phillips has painstakingly pieced together every game and goal scored by Best from his fi rst team debut against West Bromwich Albion in September 1963. ... Read more

Product Description
Two years after his death mystery still surrounds the creative and destructive forces which ruled George Best - the man who, many good judges insist, was the greatest footballer of all time anywhere. ?Those forces are explored in this unique, penetrating new book using the words of people who knew him throughout his life. Memories of George Best gathers the candid experiences of a host of friends and enemies, team-mates and opponents, journalists who lived it with him, celebrities and fans. Here the creative forces live again in the glorious games, captured through the words of those who played in them. Here are mighty Benfica humbled and little Northampton Town mesmerised. Here is the strange excursion to play for a Jewish team in South Africa and the North American adventure where Best scored what he considered his greatest goal. ?Here, too, is the sadness when he constantly ran away from problems, became a mercenary player and ultimately a doomed alcoholic. There is a full examination of his extraordinary sexual attraction and how he gave it full rein and how as a young man he became so famous so fast that he was called The Fifth Beatle. ?The book is co-authored by Christopher Hilton, formerly of the Daily Express and an acclaimed writer of sports books, and Ian Cole of the Daily Mail, a lifelong football follower and respected expert on the game.?They say: 'We have gone to the people who really know to unlock the mystery of this genuinely amazing human being. It involved dozens of interviews with people all over the world and we like to think we've done the unlocking.' Many of the people interviewed have contributed pictures and memorabilia - previously unseen - to give the book an intimate feel. These are accompanied by a portfolio of professional photographs carefully chosen to illustrate all aspects of his life. Many of these, too, have never been seen before. ... Read more
