Première cogneuse de l'histoire de son sport, elle devient en 1991 la plus jeune numéro un mondiale au classement WTA ; pendant deux ans, elle interrompt ainsi le long règne de sa rivale Steffi Graf. Avant son vingtième anniversaire, elle remporte huit titres du Grand Chelem, à l'exception de Wimbledon. Elle voit pourtant sa chasse aux records se briser brusquement en avril 1993, lorsqu'en plein match à Hambourg, elle se fait poignarder dans le dos par un spectateur déséquilibré. De retour à la compétition 28 mois plus tard, Seles ajoute l'Open d'Australie à son palmarès en 1996, puis parvient aisément à se maintenir parmi l'élite. Jamais, toutefois, elle ne retrouve le sommet de sa forme, notamment concurrencée par de nouvelles joueuses plus athlétiques. En février 2008, après cinq saisons d'inactivité pour cause de blessure, elle officialise sa retraite sportive à l'âge de 34 ans. Monica Seles est également restée célèbre auprès du public pour les cris qu'elle avait coutume de pousser sur le court au moment de frapper la balle. Monica Seles est la fille cadette d'une famille d'origine hongroise, vivant à Novi Sad.
