Il est considéré comme l'un des meilleurs joueurs de double au monde. Il a en effet remporté douze tournois du Grand Chelem dans cette catégorie : six en double messieurs et six en double mixte. Il a longtemps été associé à son compatriote Mahesh Bhupathi et joue actuellement aux côtés du Tchèque Lukáš Dlouhý. Né à Goa, Leander Paes grandit à Calcutta dans une famille de sportifs : sa mère est une joueuse professionnelle de basket-ball (capitaine de l'équipe indienne aux championnats d'Asie en 1980), son père un joueur de hockey sur gazon membre de l'équipe médaillée de bronze aux Jeux olympiques d'été de 1972 à Munich. Il commence à jouer au tennis à l'âge de 5 ans. En 1985, Paes rejoint la Britannia Tennis Academy à Madras où il est entraîné par Dave O'Meara. En 1990, il remporte Wimbledon junior et termine la saison numéro 1 mondial junior. Il devient professionnel en 1991 (il obtient l'US Open junior la même année). C'est lorsqu'il représente son pays que Leander Paes obtient ses meilleurs résultats. Membre de l'équipe indienne de Coupe Davis depuis 1990, il réalise l'exploit de battre Leconte puis Boetsch en quart de finale dans les arènes de Fréjus en 1993, avant que la victoire de Ramesh Krishnan sur Rodolphe Gilbert dans le 5 match qualifie l'Inde pour les demi-finales.
