Il est le grand frère de la joueuse professionnelle Dinara Safina. Il a notamment remporté l'US Open 2000, l'Open d'Australie 2005 et fut numéro 1 mondial à 20 ans. Il a pris sa retraite sportive le 11 novembre 2009 après une défaite contre Juan Martín del Potro au Masters de Paris-Bercy. Marat Safin naît à Moscou le 27 janvier 1980 et est dès ses premières années prédestiné à une carrière dans le tennis. En effet, sa mère Rausa Islanova, est une ancienne championne de tennis, et son père Misha (d'origine tatare) est quant à lui directeur d'un club de tennis. Il est entrainé par son père dès l'âge de six ans avec comme partenaire Anna Kournikova. À l'âge de 13 ans et avec de grandes facilités de formations, Marat visite une académie de tennis à Valence. L'entraîneur du club, Maria Pasqual découvre vite le grand talent du jeune russe et le prendra sous son aile. C'est donc à l'âge de 14 ans que Marat part seul en Espagne rejoindre Pasqual et Rafael Mensua qui l'entraineront durant quatre ans. Safin won two majors and reached the world number 1 ranking during his career. He was also famous for his emotional outbursts and sometimes fiery temper on court. Safin is the older brother of former World No. 1 WTA player Dinara Safina. They are the first brother-sister tandem in tennis history to both achieve No. 1 rankings. Safin began his professional career in 1997, and held the No. 1 world ranking for a total of 9 weeks between November 2000 and April 2001.
