Extractions: News Index After spending the last year working on a revision of the NHPRC's strategic plan, Commissioners voted six to five to throw out the most important recommendations agreed to unanimously by an ad hoc committee on revision in favor of Executive Director Jerry George's recommendation. The narrow decision of the Commission turns its historic commitments and priorities upside down and relegates documentary editing in its entirety to the bottom of the priority list. Grants to states for regranting to archival projects were moved into number one priority. As Archivist of the United States and Chairman of the NHPRC John Carlin Mr. George took by surprise at least some of the members of the ad hoc committee on plan revision and other commissioners when a few weeks before the meeting he distributed a statement that he could not support the committee's recommendations. Soon thereafter he submitted his own recommendations as an alternative. He called for revising the mission statement of the NHPRC to read as follows: NHPRC's statutory mission is to see that America's history is accessibly documented. That motion was defeated in favor of the mission statement worked out by the ad hoc committee, which reads as follows: The NHPRC exists to carry out its statutory mission to ensure understanding of our nation's past by promoting, nationwide, the identification, preservation, and dissemination of essential historical documentation.
