    Extractions: David Almond has several novels for adults to his name in the United Kingdom, but Skellig is his first book for younger readers. Unlike many authors who make such a transition, Almond understands that telling a good story well is the first rule of writing no matter who your audience is. Michael and his parents and baby sister have just moved into a crumbling "fixer-upper," which might have been more exciting were his sister not seriously ill. Left to his own devices, he explores the dilapidated garage and makes a startling discovery. It looks like a filthy, bedraggled vagrant at first, but Michael quickly learns that this being is more than human. He calls himself Skellig, and he is part man, part angel or bird or both, and wholly remarkable. Michael's new friend Mina, a smart and eccentric home-schooled girl, helps him hide and protect Skellig. Meanwhile, Michael's excited happiness with Skellig is blunted by the tension produced when his sister goes into the hospital. But the encounters with Skellig help both Michael and Mina and, by extension, Michael's family. Sedan några år tillbaka står hans böcker på bokhyllorna och Almond ägnar idag all sin tid åt skrivandet. Till stor del kan han tacka Skellig för det! David Almond växte upp i en liten by nära Newcastle. Han studerade vid Newcastles och East Anglias universitet och arbetade i många år som lärare, både för vuxna och barn. Sin författarkarriär började han med att skriva för vuxna läsare. Bland hans novellsamlingar återfinns Sleepless nights och A kind of heaven . För att kunna försörja sig fick han till en början arbeta extra, bland annat som brevbärare och hotellportier. Almond var också redaktör för ett litterärt magasin, Panurge, under åren 1987-93. I en intervju berättar David Almond hur han under flera år försökte sig på att skriva barnböcker, men det var inte förrän Skellig kom till honom som han tyckte att han verkligen hade lyckats. As part of the package from a feature article I found an envelope with an interesting image. This is an image that George took on July 20, 1992 of solar prominences using a hydrogen alpha filter (.6 angstrom bandwidth).
