Well-known novelist, Paul Auster, is known for his whacky life comedies and pecuiliar perceptions. Director Wayne Wang lured Auster into producing "Smoke," a delightful film starring Harvey Kietel. Questions or comments about Interviews? Feel free to let us know what's on your mind. AUSTER: It's true, I did work for about six months on an Esso oil tanker. I got the job after I left college. I didn't know what I wanted to do in life. I didn't want to be an academic, which is probably what I was best suited for, but I just didn't want to be in school anymore, and the idea of spending my life in a university was just awesomely terrible. I had no real profession, no trade, I hadn't really studied for anything. All I wanted to do was write at the time, poems, and prose, too. I guess my ambition was simply to make money however I could to keep myself going in some modest way, and I didn't need much, I was unmarried at the time, no children. It turned out that my stepfather, who was a person I was very close to, the person to whom I dedicated Moon Palace, Norman Schiff, a wonderful man who earned his living as a labor lawyer and negotiator. One of his clients was the Esso Seamen's Union, a company union. So I knew all about these ships and as I was about to leave school I said, "Norman, do you think you can get me a job on a ship?" and he said "I'll take care of it for you." It's extremely difficult to get these jobs because you can't get a job on a ship unless you have seaman's paper's, and you can't get seaman's papers unless you have a job on a ship. There had to be a way to break through the circle, and he was the one who arranged it for me. So I shipped out. It's quite amusing, I went through all the exams, I got my papers, and then I had to sit around and wait until a ship from the fleet came into the New York area with an opening, and it was unclear how long this wait was going to be.

Extractions: Cyrus Cole: Forest Whitaker In 1995, together with Paul Auster, born in 1947, director Wayne Wang, born in 1949, ( The Joy Luck Club Dim Sum Eat a Bowl of Tea ) created a touching movie about people whose stories converge in a small tabacco store in Brooklyn, hence the title Smoke . The danger of this type of film is that all the different stories fall appart, that the movie disintegrates. A lot of the credit for Smoke therefore goes to the brilliance of Paul Auster's story-telling which prevents this type of failure. Auggie Wren (Harvey Keitel) is the small shop's owner. A lot of people with different destinies meet in his tobacco store. Among them is the writer Paul Benjamin (William Hurt), who had lost his wife in a tragic shooting a few years ago. Auggie tells some of his clients and friends that Benjamin's wife had been in his shop just a few moments before she was killed. She bought some cigars for her husband. If she had just stayed a few moments longer in his shop, if she had not found the exact change immediately, if there had just happened to be a few more people in his store, she would not have been killed and her baby - she was five months pregnant - would be alive today. Since that tragic incident, Paul Benjamin has not been able to finish another novel.

After graduating from Columbia University (M.A., 1970), Auster moved to France, where he began translating the works of French writers and publishing his own work in American journals. He gained renown for a trio of experimental detective stories published collectively as The New York Trilogy (1987). It comprises City of Glass (1985), about a crime novelist who becomes entangled in a mystery that causes him to assume various identities; Ghosts (1986), about a private eye known as Blue who is investigating a man named Black for a client named White; and The Locked Room (1986), the story of an author who, while researching the life of a missing writer for a biography, gradually assumes the identity of that writer. City of Glass uses the Tower of Babel as a recurring theme - for example, the detective follows another man for days around New York on a seemingly random path, only to realise that his steps inscribe the letters 'Tower of Babel'. Though Paul Auster usually writes fascinating books, his prose is often flat, sometimes to the point of dullness. With the exception of his impressionistically poetic memoir of his father, The Invention of Solitude (1982), he has tended toward the lean, hardboiled style of detective writers like Dashiell Hammett and Jim Thompson. But by combining that terse minimalism with an original moral sense, Auster has fashioned his own distinct form: his characters may affect an air of dangerous cool, but inwardly they are uncertain, skeptical, often perilously questioning. Why am I who I am? they ask. What got me to this point in life? And what would it take for me to be someone completely different? Hand to Mouth: A Chronicle of Early Failure sounds like the ideal medium for such hard questions and free-form philosophical speculations. The book is a long essay on Auster's early struggles to earn a living as a writer, packaged with some previously unpublished samples of his work from that period: three short plays, a full-length detective novel, and the instructions for a version of rotisserie baseball played with a deck of cards. The collection gives him space to ruminate on his own bad luck, and the good that came from it; to show us firsthand the power of circumstance; and to re-present his commercial failures in the light of his literary genesis.

Extractions: It is not surprising that his father's sudden death -the abrupt ending of a bond so frustrated, unexplored, undeveloped, so seldom, apparently, present - should have stunned Mr. Auster. It overwhelmed him not only with shock but also with a desperate need to examine at last his memory of the man who had been his father, his own feelings about both their lives, and to put it all into words. When he first heard the news at 8 o'clock on a Sunday morning, he ''could not muster a single ennobling thought.'' But then, ''Even before we packed our bags and set out on the three hour drive to New Jersey, I knew that I would have to write about my father. I had no plan, had no precise idea of what this meant. ... I thought: my father is gone. If I do not act quickly, his entire life will vanish along with him.'' ''The Invention of Solitude'' starts with Paul Auster's urge to save his father's life from vanishing along with his father. It leads initially to an evocation of his father's conduct and oddities, a reconstruction made of remembered scraps and impressions. The groping account takes the form of a series of relatively brief paragraphs and essays that examine his father's behavior toward his family and business acquaintances, as well as his social life after his divorce. The account arrives inevitably at a consideration of his father's own parents. There is a dramatic, if tenuous, consistency in the fact that Mr. Auster, rummaging through his father's effects, should discover that ''One very big album, bound in expensive leather with a gold-stamped title on the cover - This is Our Life: The Austers - was totally blank inside'' and that a photograph from his father's childhood (of his brothers, sister and mother) had had the image of Mr. Auster's grandfather torn out of it. The woman in the picture, Mr. Auster's grandmother, had shot and killed her husband in 1919 and had been acquitted. The murdered man's brother had tried and failed to kill her in revenge. The violence occurred when Paul's father was an infant. What it explains is certainly beyond fathoming; but it and the events leading up to it and on from it obviously entered into the subsequent character of Mr. Auster's father, the youngest child.
