In the play 'Happy Days' Winnie appears on stage buried up to her waist in a mound of soil; in 'Not I' the audience sees only a mouth on stage trying to deliver a monologue of reminiscences. Die Verheissung durch den Jungen bedeutete eine mögliche Metapher für das "Bodenpersonal Gottes" ( ). Der Begriff "Gott" beinhaltet verschiedenste Implikationen und Unklarheiten. Während dem elendiglichen Warten und der ewigen Ungewissheit, bleibt einzig und allein die Hoffnung, die zeitweise in Hoffnungslosigkeit überschlägt. Beethoven once determined to seize Fate by the throat, it has been claimed; Beckett's characters are simply seized by the throat. Men at one time, if not masters of their fates, at least enjoyed the consolation of cursing God before dying; Beckett's merely curse. He has been called one of the greatest writers of the twentieth century, although his prose, poems, and plays have confused many. One critic compared his style to "translating the rhythms of defecation into sentence structure." Near the end of his life Beckett characterized his writing as "a Stain upon the silence" and concluded that "there has been nothing else worthwhile." The stain was a nasty one. Physical, mental, and emotional cripples lurch along dark paths toward oblivion, fighting poorly, loving ineptly, misunderstanding almost completely, creaking toward entropy on dilapidated bikes or crutches, living in garbage cans, picking at each other like poultry in a crowded henhouse. Working in the days when it was easier to shock - long before Annie Sprinkle's performance art and Andres Serrano's "Piss Christ" drizzled upon postmodern audiences - Beckett prodded with language at once poetic and obscene, especially when he was younger: Women are "cunts" and "clods," men are lame, listless dopes who float along life's currents with all the resolve and intelligence of drifting phytoplankton.

Silence features large in his earliest fiction, "Assumption" (a short story, 1929), "Dream of Fair to Middling Women" (a novel written in 1932, published 1983), More Pricks Than Kicks (a novel, or ten connected short stories, 1934), and "A Case in a Thousand" (a short story, 1934). In "Assumption" the male protagonist is locked in a self-imposed silence. After he has met a woman who seduces him, a lifetime's suppressed scream escapes from him that sweeps her aside and leads to his death, "fused with the cosmic discord." Here in miniature is described the fate awaiting Belacqua, the anti-hero of "Dream" and More Pricks . Like his namesake in Dante's Purgatorio , Belacqua aspires to stasis and silence. Inevitably this makes him unlikable (he is constantly escaping social obligations) and uninteresting in conventional novelistic terms. As in "Assumption" sexuality is closely linked to death, figurative and literal. Sexual love means exile from the self. It is also likely to result in that unforgivable crime - bringing another unfortunate human being into this purgatorial life. So Beckett from the start offers us an anti-hero in an anti-novel that scorns the conventions of romance. Throughout both Belacqua narratives the narrator plays an obtrusive, metafictional role. He comments on his own and others' fictional structures. "The only unity in this story," he interjects, "is, please God, an involuntary unity." He reminds us (also in "Dream") of the fictional status of his invented characters: "There is no real Belacqua, it is to be hoped not indeed, there is no such person." He shares with his readers his authorial manipulations of character and event, saying of Belacqua, "What shall we make him do now, what would be the correct thing for him to think for us?" At the same time Beckett plays tricks on his readers by showing his narrator to be unreliable, inconsistent, and deceitful. By the end of

The recordings in this production provide an impressive documentation of Beckett's 'visual writing'. To the fore in the selection of texts for this CD were the author's so-called 'eye pieces', together with some of his observation and movement sketches: Molloy L'image/the Image (1959), and Company (1980) three texts from different phases in the life of the Irish author and Nobel literature laureate. They are read by actors Natasha Parry, Barry McGovern, and Raymond Federman. The playing directions for the instrumentalist on this CD (Uwe Dieksen) are derived directly from the so-called sucking stones sequence in Beckett's novel Molloy , where the author has his protagonists invent three variations of the correct way to suck 16 pebbles distributed between two coat or trouser pockets. Everything takes place inside the head, and yet these image provoking speech rituals find their way to the outside. Everything becomes the listener's projection room. We look on the speakers as we would an open, exposed interior. Speech is its own dissecting instrument. Existence is transferred into speech, being is removed from its time. Two tramps are waiting by a sickly looking tree for the arrival of M. Godot. They quarrel, make up, contemplate suicide, try to sleep, eat a carrot and gnaw on some chicken bones. Two other characters appear, a master and a slave, who perform a grotesque scene in the middle of the play. A young boy arrives to say that M. Godot will not come today, but that he will come tomorrow. The play is a development of the title, Waiting for Godot . He does not come and the two tramps resume their vigil by the tree, which between the first and second day has sprouted a few leaves, the only symbol of a possible order in a thoroughly alienated world. The two tramps of Beckett, in their total disposition and in their antics with hats and tight shoes, are reminiscent of Chaplin and the American burlesque comedy team. This technical meaning is not recognized by most of the French. It was perhaps chosen for its indeterminateness, for its capacity to designate the end of many things, the end of life itself.
