He is still writing, and the poems which now appear, usually embedded in short plays or set into the commentary and prefaces which have been another preoccupation of his later years, are, in many instances, as vigorous and as subtle as the poems written by him during the years ordinarily considered to be the period of a poet's maturity. Yeats has advanced into age with his art strengthened by a long battle which had as its object a literature written by Irishmen fit to take its place among the noble literatures of the world. The spectacle of a poet's work invigorated by his lifelong struggle against the artistic inertia of his nation is one that would shed strong light into any era. The phenomenon of a poet who enjoys continued development into the beginning of old age is in itself rare. Goethe, Sophocles, and, in a lesser degree, Milton come to mind as men whose last works burned with the gathered fuel of their lives. More often development, in a poet, comes to a full stop; and it is frequently a negation of the ideals of his youth, as well as a declination of his powers, that throws a shadow across his final pages. Yeats in his middle years began to concern himself with the problem of the poet in age. He wrote in 1917, when he was fifty-two:

Graham The instructor needs to explain Bogan's often distancing herself from the poem's ideas, creating what Adrienne Rich has called a "mask" or "code." Her use of the more traditional lyric form (though not in most of the poems selected for the anthology) raises questions about her relationship to the experimental verse that poets of the prior generation and those of her own were writing.     Extractions: Louise Bogan was born on August 11,1897 in Livermore Falls, Maine. She attended Boston Girls Latin School and went to Boston University for a year, from 1915-1916. She married Curt Alexander in 1916 and was widowed in 1919. After the death of her husband, she moved to New York City with her young daughter and began working as a writer. In New York she came into contact the city's thriving literary community, which included writers like William Carlos Williams, Marianne Moore, Malcolm Cowley and Edmund Wilson. She published her first collection of poetry, Body of This Death in 1923. She married writer Raymond Holden in 1925. The marriage ended in divorce in 1937. Bogan wrote much of her poetry in the 1920's and 1930's. In the 1930s, she began reviewing poetry for the New Yorker, a job she held for over 38 years. Bogan was a very intense and private poet, whose works reflected a very emotional and sometimes tragic vision. In 1955 she was one of the recipients of the Bollingen Prize - awarded by Yale University for achievement in American poetry - for her Collected Poems 1923-53 (1954).
