Januar). Diese prägte auch die legendäre Inszenierung von "Die Mutter" an der Berliner Schaubühne (13. Dezember), damals noch am Halleschen Ufer, Regie: Peter Stein u.a. (1971). Extractions: Bertolt Brecht was born on February 10, 1898 in the medieval city of Augsburg, part of the Bavarian section of the German Empire. Married in 1897, his father was a Catholic and his mother a Protestant. Brecht was their first child and he was baptized as Eugen Bertolt Friedrich Brecht. His father, Bertolt Friedrich Brecht, worked as Chief Clerk in a paper factory and clearly fit the definition of "bourgeois." His mother, Wilhelmine Friederike Sophie Brezing, was ill with breast cancer most of his young life. He had one brother, Walter, who was born in 1900. Throughout his life Brecht was supported by his family, especially his father with whom he disagreed strongly concerning the bourgeois lifestyle. His father continued to provide financial support and a home for much of his life. Only one correspondence between them survives: a letter where Brecht begs his father to raise his illegitimate children. Brecht was a sickly child, with a congenital heart condition and a facial tic. As a result he was sent to a sanitarium to relax. At age six he attended a Protestant elementary school (Volksschule) and at age ten a private school: The Royal Bavarian Realgymnasium (Königlich-Bayerisches Realgymnasium). Like most students, he was educated in Latin and the humanities, and later exposed to thinkers such as Nietzsche. He suffered a heart attack at the age of twelve, but soon recovered and continued his education.

Extractions: Poetischer und politischer Auftrag bei Bertolt Brecht Für mehr als 50 Jahre war der Blick auf Bertolt Brecht durch die gegebenen politischen Verhältnisse getrübt. In dieser Zeit wurde das Bild des Autors in einem Maße verfälscht und polarisiert, wie es wohl keinem anderen deutschen Schriftsteller - außer vielleicht Heine - widerfahren ist. Die Stücke und Gedichte Brechts weisen jedoch in ihrer Bedeutung weit über die Zeit ihres Verfassers hinaus. Im Gegensatz nämlich zu einer gewaltsam vereinfachenden Brecht-Rezeption, die während der Exilzeit und im sogenannten Kalten Krieg den historischen Gegebenheiten vielfach undialektisch und dogmatisch angepasst wurde, hat sich der Dialektiker Brecht weder in seinem Werk noch in seinem Selbst-Verständnis jemals einem eindeutigen politischen oder literarischen Lager zugeordnet und zuordnen lassen. Dies aber scheint in der Tat erst bei einer Lektüre möglich, die zumindest das Blockdenken des Kalten Krieges und dessen Zwang zu einer eindeutigen politischen Positionsbestimmung hinter sich gelassen hat. Denn erkennbar wird im Lichte einer solchen, dogmenfreien Werkbetrachtung vor allem in den literarischen und autobiographischen Schriften ein weiträumiger und bislang unentdeckter 'doppelter Boden', in dem Brecht das Treiben seiner Spielfiguren - und damit zugleich sein eigenes - eher skeptisch und in aller dialektischen Ambivalenz beobachtet. Hier zeigt sich ein Autor, der von seinem selbstgewählten literatur-politischen Auftrag keineswegs überzeugt zu sein scheint, sondern der mit sich und seinen Figuren eine nahezu lebenslange und intensive poetologische Diskussion über seine politische und ästhetische Verantwortung austrägt.

Of course, there are a few minor details that separate us, such as fame and the urgency that propelled him into this kind of life. But let's just say ... I can relate. For the German playwright of The Threepenny Opera the aphorism 'it's a small world' never rang truer. Brecht's socio-critical and highly satirical writings made him a favorite enemy of the National Socialists in pre-war Germany. In 1933 he was forced out of the country by the Nazi government. A detour via Paris led him to Denmark. Little did he know that this was only the beginning of his odyssey. Like the pestilence, the Nazis roared their ugly heads wherever Brecht decided to go. His travels took him to the Soviet Union and even Mali, but there seemed no end to the Nazi expansion. Last, but not least, Brecht arrived in the US in 1941. With the help of his good friend and fellow exile writer Lion Feuchtwanger, he settled in Los Angeles.
