Although always hard pressed financially, the elder Burns, until his death in 1784, encouraged his sons with their education. Prior to that he had recited his poems and circulated hand written copies to his friends and acquaintances. So much so, that he was well known in his native Ayrshire when he borrowed a pony and set out from his farm "Mossgiel" to Edinburgh.
