   Extractions: JAMES BRANCH CABELL In Extract from Impressions of American Literature in "The Times" Literary Supplement, June 16, 1921 THE younger generation of American writers has offended the older arbiters of literary standards in that country, not only by taking seriously things that the latter have condemned, but still more by treating lightly subjects that to them have been sacred, or at, least taboo. Retribution has been sure, if not always swift ; the most sensational recent effort of the New York Society for the Suppression of Vice was the suppression last year of Mr. James Branch Cabell's medieval romance "Jurgen," then in its third edition, in which the author had committed the heinous crime of treating sex as a joke and chronicling the adventures and gallantries of his quite non-moral hero. The sale of the book is now a legal offence in America, pending the remote decision of the Courts on whether the book is " obscene " it took three years for Mademoiselle de Maupin to pass through the Courts; all the publisher's stock was attached by the society, but second-hand copies, clandestinely sold, are said to have fetched high sums; the author has received an extensive advertisement, which, however, he presumably does not appreciate.

Copies rarely appear on the market and are very highly desired by collectors of both Cabell and Howard Pyle. From the collection of Dr. Thomas Head. Good condition, spine slightly faded, some light wear to edges, light soiling to cloth, diagonal crease on rear cover and crack on rear pastedown, separation between frontispiece and title page. Chivalry Illustrated by Howard Pyle. First edition, in the rare flexible red cloth binding, 224pp, 12 full page color plates. This variant edition is among the rarest of Cabell's works. Also from the collection of Dr. Thomas Head. Very good condition, spine slightly faded, some light wear to edges of covers, Rubbing on bottom of page block, diagonal crease at lower corner of front cover. The Cream of the Jest 1917 McBride NY First edition. Inscribed by Cabell on the front free endpaper: "For Vincent Starrett with more confidence in his literary taste than in his approbation. James Branch Cabell 9 November 1917." Very good in DW. Spine faded and lightly worn at ends, minor wear to the board edges, corners lightly bumped. Dust jacket lightly chipped at edges and with several short tears at the folds, "Starrett" in pencil across the front panel of jacket (I have not yet checked to see if it is Mr. Starrett's handwriting.)

    Extractions: Richmond author James Branch Cabell is best known for his controversial Jurgen (1919), one of several ironic fantasies he wrote that took place in Cabell's mythical medieval world of Poictesme (Pwa-tem). Jurgen , laced with erotic overtones, was considered pornographic by some and a trial over its content brought the reclusive writer national fame. Throughout the 1920s, Cabell was highly regarded by his literary peers H.L. Mencken, Sinclair Lewis, and others praised his works. His medieval romanticism and fantasy were in fact thinly disguised commentary on the manners of those times. As the 1930s approached, when the realism of writers like Ernest Hemingway and John Steinbeck came into vogue, Cabell's sophisticated writing voice fell out of favor with the reading public. Cabell continued to write and by the end of his life he had authored some 52 volumes of work. Today, some recognize Cabell as one of the first contemporary writers from the South. Like his friend and fellow Richmond writer Ellen Glasgow (1873-1945), Cabell was not afraid to satirize what he saw as the South's contradictions. Others, noting Cabell's unique blending of classic myths and legends with his own imagination, consider him a pioneer of fantasy writing. His work has been admired by a diverse group of writers, including Carl Van Vechten, Margaret Mitchell, Edmund Wilson, Robert Heinlein, and Neil Gaiman.

James Branch Cabell (1879-1958) of Richmond, Virginia wrote about 50 books between 1905 and 1955, including the only octodecalogy that I'm aware of in literature - that's an 18-volume work - called the Biography of The Life of Manuel . (Actually, although the Biography was published in 18 volumes of the Storsende Edition , true Cabell fans know that by proper counting it is really 20 volumes, thus following the "fixed law of Poictesme that all things must go by tens forever".)
