Extractions: One of the unnerving things about classics in any field is that one tends never to be quite as familiar with them as one might have expected. I was rather ashamed when I realised that I had never actually read ' Double Indemnity ', even though I have seen the classic film several times. When I belatedly turned to the first page, I was immediately hooked. It isn't difficult to see why Hollywood was attracted by Cain's taut yet visual style and the plot about the doomed infatuation of an amoral insurance salesman with the ruthless wife of a wealthy man (' I loved her like a rabbit loves a rattlesnake ' is one of the best lines.) The storyline of the movie differs from that of the novel in a few respects, but each is utterly compelling, with a remorseless build-up to a terrific finale. It is odd to think that, if Orion had not embarked on this venture, I might never have read this memorable book. I am very glad they have given me an excuse to have done so.

Extractions: I thought it one of the Best Novels of All Time ...so I get out my book list, to decide what book to read next, when I noticed this book on it. What a happy moment! Why? Because I read it last month, not knowing it was on the list. Here follows the tale of how I came to pick up The Postman Always Rings Twice : Once upon a time, I was staying at my friend Joe's house, and I wound up reading his copy of Shoot the Piano Player (or Down There ) by David Goodis. I was amazed. Not only was it the best book I ever read, it wasn't even a close call. I sent a copy to my stepfather, with a note "This is the best book I've ever read." My mother picked it up, read the first page, and then sat down and read it all. She called me a week later, to ask why I thought it was the "best book I've ever read," since she didn't think it was Great. I asked her when the last time was that she sat down and read an entire novel, start to finish. She said, "It has been years." I asked her if she's been thinking about the characters at least once a day in the week since she'd read it. She said, "Come to think of it, I have." I asked her when the last time was that she called me up just to discuss a novel she had read. She answered "Never" which was true. And that pretty much answered her question.

More than a dozen films have been made from Cain's novels and stories, several of which have become classics of the film noir genre. The first, "Double Indemnity" (1944), starred Barbara Stanwyck and Fred MacMurray as a cold-blooded couple planning an insurance fraud murder; it was later loosely remade as "Body Heat" (1981) with Kathleen Turner and William Hurt (although neither film utilized Cain's original Satan worship subplot). The film version of "Mildred Pierce" (1945) won Joan Crawford the Best Actress Oscar, and the 1946 and 1981 film versions of "The Postman Always Rings Twice" provided showcases for actresses Lana Turner and Jessica Lange, respectively. Pia Zadora did not have the same luck starring in a disastrous version of Cain's "Butterfly" (1981). Cain's books are dark tales of obsessive love and murder, peopled by rumpled men with troubled pasts and gorgeous "dames" either in distress or causing distress. His stories translated perfectly to the film noir genre of the 1940s, with its dark, angled lighting, hard-boiled scripts and lack of naivete. His characters provided performers the opportunity to change direction (Crawford, MacMurray) or establish their niche as big-city toughs (John Garfield and Lana Turner in "Postman").
