Extractions: Horror World - New Release Book Reviews - July 2002 THE DARKEST PART OF THE WOODS by Ramsey Campbell PS Publishing Hardback Limited Edition (UK) Review by Andy Fairclough Sometimes it helps to step away from something for a while and when you come back to it you find that you can approach it with more determination, skill and passion than perhaps you ever have before. This may well be the case with THE DARKEST PART OF THE WOODS, Ramsey Campbell's first horror novel for a few years. This didn't happen by choice however. British publishers in their infinite wisdom decided among themselves a few years ago that horror fiction was dead and one by one they ensured that they killed off not only the genre in the mass market in the UK but also the outlets for talents such as Stephen Laws, Mark Morris (temporarily), Graham Masterton and Ramsey Campbell. Adaptable as Campbell is though, this became an opportunity and he reinvented himself as a suspense writer for the American market having had a further two novels published there. An emotive Campbell announced at the British Fantasycon a couple of years ago that he would stick a proverbial two fingers up at the marketplace and that his next novel would be a supernatural novel and here is the result.

Seitdem ist er aus der unheimlichen Phantastik nicht mehr wegzudenken, hat viele Preise gewonnen und viele weitere Bücher Romane und Kurzgeschichtensammlungen veröffentlicht. Sein legendäres Erstlingswerk The Inhabitant of the Lake and Less Pleasant Tenants enthielt ausschließlich Mythos-Geschichten, doch seitdem hat Campbell den Mythos mehr oder wenige verlassen. Es gab auch später noch Werke aus dieser Ecke des Horrors (und wird es vielleicht auch wieder geben), und Einflüsse Lovecrafts sind weiterhin spürbar, aber Campbell hat sehr schnell eine eigene Stimme gefunden und beeinflusst nun seinerseits junge Autoren mit einem ganz eigenen Stil und eigenen Ideen. Aber The Inhabitant of the Lake hat seine Spuren hinterlassen. Campbell hat den Mythos um viele Wesen bereichert. Das Severn River Valley im Südwesen Großbritanniens, in dem seine Geschichten angesiedelt sind, ist ein Ort, an den es Spielercharakter verschlagen könnte und sollte. Die neuste Abenteuer-Sammlung von Chaosium beschäftigt sich mit Campbells Werk, um diese Lücke zu schließen.

Peter Straub considers him to be 'one of the few real writers in our field. In some ways. . . the best of us all.' Clive Barker's opinion is that 'Ramsey Campbell writes prose as incisive and elegant as anything the mainstream can offer,' and Jonathon Carroll calls him 'a storyteller who repeatedly leaves you stunned with a flick of a phrase, or an insight that can honestly be called awesome.' Extractions: Original appearance: Albedo one issue , 1997? Ramsey Campbell has been at it again and if you like understated, modern, urban horror there are few who can be considered his equal. Campbell's style is particularly English even though his roots lie in the realms of Lovecraft and Poe. His work is as much a product of his Liverpool background as any of Stephen King's Castle Rock stories are a product of his. THE LONG LOST, his latest paperback, could almost be passed off as mainstream with just a tinge of the supernatural about it. The horror of the piece mounts slowly and is never overt. It is merely suggested by the mounting and seemingly coincidental misfortune that surrounds the central characters, David and Joelle Owain, after they befriend a confused old woman, Gwen, while on holiday in Wales. It appears that she may be a distant relative of David's and, as she is virtually homeless, they take her home to Chester with them and place her in a nearby old people's home.
