    Extractions: Behind the Book: One author's insecurities: your prose is bigger than mine I'm fumbling around in a Mississippi bookstore, waiting to do my reading gig . . . tugging on my necktie, sipping bottled water, and trying to decide whether or not I've locked myself out of my hotel room. It's hot outside, the air a little wetter and the land a little flatter than I'm accustomed to. I look along the walls, take in the spines of a thousand books, and it occurs to me this is about six stops into my book tour that there's a good deal of commerce and lucre bound up in this art. More precisely, it occurs to me that there is a phenomenal amount of competition on the shelves. I'm starting to go through the opiate progression of publishing; in the beginning, you're after just a tiny taste, and when the taste is pleasing, you want that much more. Two years ago, I simply hoped to see my book in print and would've been happy to have sold it out of the trunk of my car. Now I want to throttle Harry Potter. It's like the Springsteen lyric: Poor man wants to be rich, rich man wants to be king, king ain't satisfied till he rules everything. Standing in this store with a best-selling book on professional wrestling in my hands, I've just realized that the book business is much like many other things that are vaguely artistic and subjective. Luck is often a finer muse than skill, and timing, publicity, and the backing of good people are the three Graces of a writer's world in the year 2000. A lot of exceptional writing and music is buried because it didn't arrive in the store with a poster and cardboard display. I mean, is Britney Spears really 12 million CDs better than Robert Earl Keen? I doubt it. Okay, I'm sure of it she's not.

Clark, who died suddenly at Keene, N.H., last Saturday was born in Ludlow August 19, 1841, the son of Orlando and Maria Taylor Clark. He married Mary Ellen Scovell, who survives him, as do two children, Mrs. Elizabeth Thompson of Helena, Mont., and Mrs. George P. Levey of Ludlow, and one sister, Mrs. Frank A.Lawrence of Ludlow. He was a veteran of the Civil War, enlisting August 29, 1862, in Company C., 16th Regiment, Vermont Volunteers. He was first sergeant of the company and was in the battle of Gettysburg. He was mustered out August 10, 1863. After leaving the army he was in business in Ludlow for several years before moving to Keene, N.H. The funeral will be held at Keene today. The body will be brought to Ludlow Friday on the 1 o'clock train for burial. MILITARY RECORD.

    Extractions: T he Routledge Critical Thinkers series is turning into something special. Maurice Blanchot by Ulrich Haase and William Large, published last year, is a profound and miraculously lucid guide to the French writer's work. This year we have Timothy Clark's introduction to the work of a major influence on Blanchot: the German philosopher Martin Heidegger (1889-1976). The high quality is maintained. Undoubtedly, this has a great deal to do with the subjects. Both writers are not only seductively poetic, but make of poetry itself something much more than is commonly permitted. Yet there are innumerable introductions to Heidegger, and a growing number of works on Blanchot. What makes these significant is the series' focus. Routledge's general subtitle is "Essential guides for literary studies". While this would seem limiting, or merely instrumental to passing an exam, it in fact reminds us of the true fascination of philosophy and literature; not as means to an end, but a necessary presence. Surprisingly, Clark begins by questioning the policy of Routledge's Series Editor. In the general introduction, Robert Eaglestone says the series aims to see the thinkers idea placed "firmly back in their contexts." Such an aim, Clark argues, blocks off precisely what Heidegger's ideas question. "Imagine", he asks:
