Although she began writing at a young age, Clifton devoted her early adult life to raising her family. In the midst of her life with her husband, Fred, and six children under the age of ten, she published her first collection of poetry, Good Times, in 1969. Since that time, she has published eight additional collections of poetry, a memoir, a compilation of her early work, and more than sixteen books for young readersincluding the popular Everett Anderson series. Presently Distinguished Professor of Humanities at St. Marys College in Maryland, Clifton has taught at Coppin State College, Goucher College, American University, and the University of California at Santa Cruz, among other colleges and universities. Her awards and distinctions include the University of Massachusetts Press Juniper Prize for Poetry; two National Endowment for the Arts Fellowships for creative writing; a nomination for the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry for Two-Headed Woman and a second Pulitzer Prize nomination for both Good Woman: Poems and a Memoir 19691980 and Next: New Poems;

Extractions: Lucille Clifton came to prominence in the Black Arts movement in the late 1960s, but this selected poems covers a less dramatic period as the poet moves into middle- and then old-age. As in the careers of most poets as they progress, elegy is evermore present, as well as the themes of illness, childhood reminiscence, as well as poems for and about children. Another important strand of her work treats of themes such as feminism and sex through the lens of mythological personae. However, she remains preoccupied with issues of negritude and race, and the social injustice still attendant upon these in the United States. The poetic style of the book is more or less uniform throughout: free-verse lines that range between one and three stresses; extensive use of dramatic monologue and autobiographical anecdote; and her chosen orthography removes all capitalisation. The result of their stylistic uncertainties is that many have fallen into the present period style, a good example of which is Clifton's "photograph", which is subtitled "my grandsons / spinning in their joy" and which I give in full:

Roland Flint was named Poet Laureate of Maryland in 1995 by Governor Parris Glendening and served in that position until October, 2000. He also served as HoCoPoLitSo's poet in residence (1989-1990) and appeared numerous times to local audiences, most recently in June 2000 at "A Day Devoted to Poetry" as part of the Columbia Festival of the Arts. A nationally recognized poet, Dr. Flint an extremely popular professor English Literature at Georgetown University. His latest works of poetry include Stubborn Hearing Voices Pigeon Pigeon in the Night (1994); and Easy: Poems In this edition of The Writing Life Roland Flint, hosted by Lucille Clifton, reads a number of poems from his 1990 National Poetry Series Winner, Stubborn , published by the University of Illinois Press. Mr. Flint reads "Love & Breath", "Gift of Honey", "Follow", "Last Words", "Park River 1939", "Juggle", "Late September, Early Morning", "Pamela, on February 8, 1982" and "2/26/91" - a poem about his birthday.
