Su trabajo tuvo una influencia decisiva sobre las ciencias de la vida y de la tierra, y sobre el pensamiento moderno en general. Nació en Shrewshury, Shropshire, Inglaterra, Darwin fue el quinto hijo de una familia inglesa rica y sofisticada. Después de graduarse de la escuela en Shrewsbury en 1825, Darwin fue a la universidad de Edinburgh a estudiar medicina. En 1827 se salió y entró a la universidad de Cambridge para preparándose para convertirse un ministro de la iglesia de Inglaterra. Allí conoció a dos figuras: el geólogo Adam Sedgwick , y el naturista John Stevens Henslow . Henslow no solamente le ayudó a ganar más confianza en sí mismo, sino que también enseñó a su alumno a ser un observador meticuloso y cuidadoso de los fenómenos naturales y a ser un coleccionista de especímenes. Die Abhandlung von Wallace "On the Origin of Species" herausgeben. Das Buch war bereits am ersten Tag seines Erscheinens vergriffen. Kurz nacheinander erschienen sechs Auflagen dieses Buches. With the assistance of a grant from Humanities Iowa and the National Endowment for the Humanities, the play was performed, at 5 different venues in Eastern Iowa from March to September 2000. In the productions the role of Charles Darwin was acted by Mr. Sandford. The play, a living history reenactment for one actor, includes a 6-minute recreation of the historic debate at Oxford in June 1860 between Bishop Samuel Wilberforce and the biologist Thomas Huxley, with the actor portraying both roles.     Extractions: Darwin : The Life of a Tormented Evolutionist This is probably the best biography I've ever read. Unlike most biographies, which cause me to go through frequent bouts of boredom, this one is incredibly lucidespecially for its length. Darwin's adventures upon the Beagle are particularly well presented. As a scientist, Darwin kept rigorous notes and journals. Drawing from these sources and the countless letters that Darwin exchanged over his life, the authors have presented a very accurate portrait of one of the most fascinating minds to have ever lived. Of particular interest to me was the various dichotomies Darwin's life included. He was a radical living in Victorian England who displayed traits of ironically and simultaneously being both a radical thinker and a conservative from the Victorian tradition. He was also a man of high standing among his family, society, and the science community. He seemingly had nothing to gain and everything to lose by propagating some of his conclusions. He did in fact lose many friends and honors because of his published views in The Origin of Species . He sat on his ideas for decades because of concerns for family and society. (For Mormon readers: You'll find many similarities in this regard between Darwin and famous Mormons like B.H. Roberts
